[1:51] <PiGuy> I am also trying to create a simple speaker for my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. Would I need to use an Audio Power Amplifier? Does anyone have a bare minimum working schematic?
[1:54] <methuzla> while there are some no-amp-required speakers, you will in general need an audio amp to get decent volume levels

[2:05] <PiGuy> methuzla: Sorry I didn't see your messages. I will check that out. Thanks!
[2:05] <sandman> So I've determined that cells phones are pretty much all garbage, imho. So I'd like to build a PiPhone
[2:06] * doomlord (~textual@host86-153-157-188.range86-153.btcentralplus.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:06] <sandman> The guides I've seen don't seem to use the RPi Zero, though, and I figured that'd help a lot to save space. The other thing I'd like would be to have GPS so I can use Google maps and such, though I don't see that being available anywhere (a daughterboard that has both GSM and GPS functionality). Could anyone point me in the right direction to making this a reality?
[2:06] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:07] <myself> sandman: Which functionality from a regular Pi are you missing on the Zero that would make it hard to adapt?
[2:07] <methuzla> PiGuy do you do something like 'sudo modprobe fbtft_device name=adafruit22' to load the driver?
[2:08] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:08] <methuzla> sandman the zero is too new (a few weeks old) for the guides to be based on it
[2:08] <myself> sandman: Anyway, there are numerous GPS-on-pi guides, I think you'd be better off for simplicity's sake using a standalone GPS chip versus trying to find a combo GSM+GPS chipset which would require redoing at least some of the software side. Unless you like that sort of thing.
[2:08] <sandman> myself: The function of being small =) I didn't like the brick-like appearance of the PiPhone using a B+ or whatever it was. Seemed a bit large. Plus, AFAIK the power draw of the RPiZero is only 100mA, right?
[2:09] <PiGuy> methuzla: Something like that, I use this tutorial: http://futurice.com/blog/id-like-to-have-some-lcd-on-my-pi
[2:09] <myself> sandman: No, the other way around. Not the good stuff about the zero, we all know that. What's the bad stuff? What's it missing that you would need to follow the guides as-written?
[2:09] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:09] <sandman> Which means I could pair it with a 2500mAh battery and get >24 hours or use, right?
[2:10] <myself> Really, I'm gonna say the old motto here: Get some parts, start building, TRY SOMETHING and then come back when you hit a roadblock.
[2:10] <sandman> Erm, nothing really. I've literally just decided to do this about 30 minutes ago
[2:10] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:10] <sandman> After being shipped 3 broken phones so far, including a broken Nexus 5X, which was the last one. This would be a project I'd undertake out of frustration, really
[2:10] <myself> If power consumption was perfectly static and predictable, and nothing else in the system was consuming power, and your voltage conversion was 100% efficient, sure.
[2:10] <PiGuy> Could I run this with a Raspberry Pi Headphone Jack? http://www.instructables.com/id/LM386-Audio-Amplifier/
[2:11] <sandman> Let me think about your question for a moment...
[2:11] <methuzla> PiGuy try adding a 'rotate=xx' parameter to that call (xx=Angle to rotate display counter clockwise: 0, 90, 180, 270)
[2:11] <sandman> I don't suppose there's anything that comes to mind. I take it you mean to suggest I just adapt the guide, perhaps write one up on my own, and just do it.
[2:11] <myself> Yeah, we need a whole lot of Nike motto in here.
[2:11] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:12] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:12] <sandman> Which is a fine idea, I think I'll do that. As for the GPS and WiFi, I suppose I could do that through USB, but of course that's going to add to the size of the thing, no?
[2:12] <myself> Depends on your soldering skills. :D
[2:12] <myself> Also, what USB? Heh.
[2:12] <myself> Oh, did you want more than zero ports? Maybe that's where it got the name.
[2:12] <PiGuy> methuzla: I tried rotate=90 and it rotated but didn't rotate what was actually on the screen but instead rotated a "viewarea". 180degrees didn't work same with 270 and 360
[2:13] <sandman> I just wish there was a RPiZero that just had all this stuff built-in. I'd much rather use an RPi as a phone than an Android/iOS as one...
[2:13] <sandman> myself: Doesn't it have a microUSB?
[2:13] <sandman> Which you could then split up
[2:13] <myself> Sure, but then you're adding adapter cables or solder, and a hub...
[2:13] <myself> and you're back up to the size of a B+
[2:13] <myself> Just get an OpenMoko and be done with it.
[2:13] * rominronin (~rominroni@194-118-174-135.adsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[2:15] <PiGuy> display_rotate rotated the HDMI output not the LCD

[6:59] <exonormal> raspi-config?
[6:59] <Mafdet> I've connected the PI to the same (switchable) power socket as the screen, and when I switch that on, the screen is in standby whilst the RaspberryPI starts, therefore it starts with the minimal resolution.
[7:00] <Mafdet> exonormal, to my understanding, the raspi-config only allows me to force a certain resolution or detection mechanism - but the detection fails whilst the screen is in standby.
[7:01] <Mafdet> exonormal, if the screen is turned on (not in standby) whilst the raspberry pi starts, all is fine. It's just that the screen usually starts when the RaspberryPI is already running - therefore missing the detection.
[7:01] <exonormal> ok it has to be connected to display while it boots otherwise it won't detect it if in standby
[7:02] <Mafdet> exonormal, that's why I'm asking if there's a way to change it afterwards.

[7:02] <Mafdet> exonormal, I can make it 'redetect' via 'tvservice', however, that won't change the resolution of the x-desktop.

[15:13] <afl_ext> Hello, I ordered RPi and I now wonder about one thing. This is, will raspbian automatically open SSH when booted first time?
[15:13] <daveake> yes
[15:14] <afl_ext> Thank you thats great
[15:14] <d4rkforce> afl_ext: yes, sshd is run when booting it up for the first time
[15:14] <daveake> You just need to know it's IP address :/
[15:14] <afl_ext> I can find out in router config pages
[15:14] <daveake> sure
[15:15] <d4rkforce> That always makes me wonder how many machines on the net you could find with pi/raspberry as login on port 22 ;-)
[15:15] <afl_ext> d4rkforce same goes for many other tiny devices, like routers for example, not only ssh
[15:15] * normalra (~normal@unaffiliated/normalra) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:15] <afl_ext> people are building botnets from things like that
[15:16] <Tenkawa> yeah however that requires/assumes the routers are port forwarding to those
[15:16] <d4rkforce> yeah. and with the upcomming IoT hype this will get a lot worse..
[15:16] <d4rkforce> Tenkawa: yes, but I bet there are many rpis on unsecured nets
[15:16] <afl_ext> natural selection I would say
[15:17] <Tenkawa> d4rkforce: sure however most cable/dsl providers i doubt have port forwarding enabled by default which would mean someone explicitly would have to open it up
[15:17] <Tenkawa> on home broadband routers
[15:18] <afl_ext> RPis with Sim cards modems are all global
[15:18] <d4rkforce> yes, but that assumes that most rpis are run at home. Think about the devices on university networks etc
[15:18] <Tenkawa> d4rkforce: true in certain areas althouh around here those get shutdown quick
[15:18] <afl_ext> well anyway a lot of peopme seem to use RPi as a server for something, like home data warehouse reachable from outside
[15:19] <Tenkawa> yeah
[15:19] <afl_ext> and if so prople will forward ssh too - just in case it will break up
[15:19] <Tenkawa> either way people should be aware of what they are "using"
[15:19] <d4rkforce> internet facing ssh with password login is a disaster waiting to happen anyways
[15:20] <afl_ext> d4rkforce port knocking looks badass hackerish method
[15:21] <Tenkawa> me brings out the tiny tools and startts gpio work
[15:21] <Tenkawa> heheheh
[15:21] <d4rkforce> a cool scheme for the paranoid for sure :-). pubkey authentication should be enough for the mere mortals

[23:32] <deadcat> is there any raspberry pi optimized coreutils? preferably in assembly

[23:34] * baldengineer (~cmiyc@unaffiliated/cmiyc) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:34] <mgottschlag> deadcat: what would you gain from that? The coreutils tend to be quite big these days, reengineering them in assembly is not really worth the effort
[23:35] <mgottschlag> (or in other words: No, I don't think so)
[23:36] <deadcat> those two statements seem pretty contradictary

[23:36] <mgottschlag> "is there... " -> "no, I don't think so"
[23:37] <mgottschlag> and big in terms of feature set
[23:37] <mgottschlag> any reengineered copy wouldn't even provide half the feature set
[23:37] <deadcat> at least not if it's written by hand in assembly
[23:38] <mgottschlag> yeah
[23:38] <deadcat> I could do without the colors and fancyness

[23:39] <mgottschlag> yeah, and you certainly could do without those 50+ formats supported by objcopy, or weird section optimization rules implemented in ld... but if you want to compile a full linux stack with it, you'd need all that :)
[23:40] <mgottschlag> so any reduced "optimized" clone would have a limited user base
[23:40] <mgottschlag> and then, I don't even see whether such optimizations would lead to any user-visible speedup or file size savings
[23:40] <deadcat> I wanted to learn assembly so I made my own `echo`
[23:40] <deadcat> https://p.iotek.org/yc4.png
[23:41] <mgottschlag> great for learning, but that's it :D
[23:43] <mgottschlag> oh, btw, anyone here has worked with ARMv7 TrustZone before?
[23:43] <deadcat> >I don't even see whether such optimizations would lead to [...] or file size savings
[23:43] <mgottschlag> okay, I forgot a "significant" there
[23:43] <deadcat> 176 vs 32744
[23:43] <mgottschlag> 32kB is not significant anymore these days
[23:44] <DexterLB> hmm, the uart on my pi works fine, but if I use the same pins as gpio, and then unexport them, uart stops working. Reboot fixes it. Is there a way to restore uart after using the same pins for gpio without rebooting?
[23:44] <mgottschlag> now, if you extend that to the whole coreutils, you'd save a megabyte at most, but there are better things to do with the time :)
[23:45] <deadcat> I would agree that it doesn't make any difference today, but I wouldn't consider it time wasted

[23:52] <ali1234> DexterLB: yes restore the correct ALT function
[23:52] <ali1234> gpio -g mode 14 alt0; gpio -g mode 15 alt0
[23:56] <DexterLB> ali1234: yeah, I was looking for the alt number for uart, thanks!
[23:56] <DexterLB> this works
