[1:18] <narcos> Hi all :) Just got my PiZero in the mail. Wondering - is there a way to SSH over the USB power?
[1:19] <narcos> I do this with my BeagleBones - power them from my laptop and SSH in over USB
[1:20] * ppq (~ppq@unaffiliated/ppq) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:22] <bret> narcos: i *think* you can do a serial terminal
[1:22] <bret> but you need to enable it

[1:23] <narcos> bret: Hmm, any idea how?
[1:23] <bret> narcos: this is how you do it on arch: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Raspberry_Pi#Serial_console
[1:23] * MiningInc (~MiningInc@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/mininginc) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)

[1:23] <bret> i would look for specifics for the os you are running
[1:24] <narcos> I grabbed the latest Raspian
[1:24] * Sisco (~Sisco@unaffiliated/sisco) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:25] <bret> i dont know the specifics for raspian, its probably similar. hangout nd other people might know
[1:25] * chithead (~chithead@gentoo/developer/chithanh) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:25] <narcos> bret: OK cool thanks :)
[1:25] <bret> i installed http://www.avahi.org/ right after isntallation, that way I can ssh to the pi easily over lan
[1:26] <bret> it enables zerconf networking, so that other systems can resolve your pihostname.local instead of using ip addresses
[1:26] <narcos> ah cool
[1:26] <bret> again, not sure if it comes already installed on raspian
[1:27] * WARlrus (~freenode@cpc17-reig4-2-0-cust230.6-3.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)

[1:30] * dalmatHG (~dalmat@89.17.13.82) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:30] <robin_debspace> bret : Hi! Unfortunately you cannot connect to the Raspbi over a USB serial terminal, the USB connection is only there for power supply... So using SSH over the network will probably be the best idea, though as far as I understand the Zero comes without an ethernet port or onboard WiFi, so you probably need a USB WiFi or ethernet adapter...
[1:31] * Sisco (~Sisco@unaffiliated/sisco) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:31] * jkridner (~jkridner@pdpc/supporter/active/jkridner) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:31] <bret> robin_debspace: what is https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Raspberry_Pi#Serial_console all about?
[1:32] <bret> is that not an interactive terminal?
[1:33] <ozzzy_> yep
[1:35] <robin_debspace> bret : Yes it is, but that's not over USB... Far as I know there's an extra serial port on the Raspberry Pi boards (not sure if that's also true for the Zero though), but that would require a separate cable and serial to USB converter... You can double check if you want, see if your computer will have a device called ttyUSBx (x being some number) once you plugin the Raspi.
[1:35] <shauno> it's on the zero too. but exposed via the gpio pins, not via usb
[1:36] <ozzzy_> you just need a 3.3v usb->serial converter and connect it
[1:37] <narcos> Hmm so I can SSH over USB serial via the GPIO pins
[1:37] <narcos> Any idea on the throughput I'd get?
[1:37] <narcos> I'm guessing like 115k baud?
[1:38] <bret> it wouldnt be ssh, and it sounds like its not interactive
[1:38] <narcos> I want to push lots of data for the project I'm working on.

[1:43] <JakeSays> djazz: ping
[1:44] <JakeSays> bret: iirc it is interactive
[1:44] <Berg> I just bought a dog and called him zero but i cant find the usb port
[1:45] <bret> JakeSays: yeah that was my impression, never tried it. instructions include turning up log levels though so maybe its read only
[1:45] <JakeSays> in rasp-config it says "enable for shell and logs" or something like that
[1:46] <JakeSays> i bought a usb adapter but havent had a chance to try it yet

[6:03] <caitlinwarren> my Pi seems to be having problems when talking over an OpenVPN tunnel. I've got my laptop on the same network, same VPN config, and it has no problems. Any direction on how to diagnose this? Or, any known limitations on the Pi?
[6:04] <raspberrypifan> i wonder if we can get to a less then zero pi
[6:04] <JakeSays> raspberrypifan: so you cool pi's?
[6:05] <raspberrypifan> a miniature 1 dollar pi
[6:05] <JakeSays> lol
[6:05] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: over wifi or ethernet?
[6:05] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: ethernet
[6:06] <JakeSays> hmm. i cant think of why it would be an issue. openvpn is all userspace
[6:06] <raspberrypifan> with wifi
[6:06] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: firewall on the laptop open?
[6:06] <Xark> PiGuy: Hmm, perhaps you can use "tvservice -s" to detect HDMI vs LCD?
[6:06] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: no firewalls involved really
[6:07] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: you could try injecting wireshark in there somewhere to watch the traffic between the two

[6:08] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: between the Pi and on the other side of the VPN tunnel? i didn't see any RSTs or anything, just looked like normal traffic.
[6:08] <JakeSays> i would watch the tunnel itself to see if it looks ok
[6:09] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: yeah, I tcpdump'd on tun0. that looked fine
[6:09] <JakeSays> ah ok
[6:09] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: might be a route problem then
[6:10] <JakeSays> its been eons since i used openvpn but i remember routes being a pita
[6:10] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: on my local side or at the VPN end? just seems weird that the laptop uses the same config and has no problems
[6:10] <caitlinwarren> and mtr -u shows same routes
[6:10] <JakeSays> both
[6:10] <caitlinwarren> if i scp a file over, it gets a connection, it starts to transfer and just stalls out
[6:10] <JakeSays> and i dont think using the *exact* config on both ends will work
[6:11] <JakeSays> the idea is you bridge two separate subnets
[6:11] <PiGuy> Xark: How would I get the result
[6:12] <PiGuy> Xark: What does it return?
[6:12] <Xark> PiGuy: See if it works. I don't know (my RPi is not hooked up ATM).
[6:12] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: i mean, i've got about 20 or so users using the same VPN without issues, only the Pi is having problems.
[6:12] <PiGuy> Xark: Alright, where do I put that line?
[6:13] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: you have 20 users connecting to your laptop over openvpn?
[6:13] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays: sorry, let me clarify the topology — laptop/pi -> vpn -> datacenter
[6:13] * shantorn (~Shane@71-222-49-17.ptld.qwest.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[6:13] <caitlinwarren> datacenter has the OpenVPN server where many users connect

[6:14] <caitlinwarren> no, laptop and pi are on the same network here at my apartment
[6:14] <JakeSays> ok i'm with ya now
[6:14] <caitlinwarren> so i scp the file from my laptop across the VPN, and it's fine. i scp a file from the pi across the VPN to the datacenter and it stalls out after connecting
[6:15] <caitlinwarren> also, the pi used to work fine — this is kind of a recent problem
[6:15] <JakeSays> ok now the same config makes sense
[6:15] <caitlinwarren> yessir, sorry for the confusion
[6:15] <JakeSays> what has changed other than vpn?

[6:20] <JakeSays> you can scp from the datacenter to the pi?

[6:23] <caitlinwarren> and i start getting packet loss

[6:30] <caitlinwarren> like i see a bunch of read()s and writes() at the start, and then it gets a EAGAIN in a call to write(), and from then on it goes into a loop of SIGALRM/write() and it's basically dead

[6:45] <baldengineer> I'm just saying, since they produced them. I'm not saying you couldn't get someone to honor a return. Setting an expectation
[6:45] <baldengineer> caitlinwarren i have 5. the only defect is damage i caused
[6:45] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: well, out of five i've had two die, but that was mainly due to some pretty rough experimentation (soldering crap on them, etc)
[6:46] <JakeSays> i think i even stepped on one

[6:46] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: then you should be ok - just watch for heat

[6:47] <baldengineer> I would remind you, they cost $35
[6:47] <caitlinwarren> do they need heatsinks/fans? i thought they dissipated heat fine in air?
[6:47] <JakeSays> they do, unless you have 200 of them in a cabinet
[6:48] <caitlinwarren> baldengineer, just trying to gather facts. depending on failure rate, maybe it's cheaper to go with more expensive alternatives
[6:48] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays, nah, it'll be in a temperature controlled server room
[6:48] * doomlord (~textual@host86-153-157-188.range86-153.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Client Quit)
[6:48] <JakeSays> caitlinwarren: i dont think you'll really know that until you use 200 of them for a while
[6:48] <baldengineer> well that doesn't say much
[6:49] <baldengineer> you're just going to pile them up in a climate controlled room? or you are going to arrange them somehow and provide air cooling?
[6:49] <JakeSays> after this batch then you can do some failure rate analysis
[6:49] <baldengineer> that's a big difference
[6:49] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays, yeah, that's the idea. 250 for this run of the class, and then we'll expand and huge a larger number next time
[6:49] <JakeSays> dang
[6:49] <JakeSays> which class is this?
[6:51] <caitlinwarren> baldengineer, i was hoping to use (/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp) and roll them out in phases to get an idea of ideal arrangement. i'm open to suggestions though, i'm new to the pi's
[6:51] <caitlinwarren> JakeSays, it's a privately funded computer security course
[6:51] <JakeSays> really. cool.
[6:52] <JakeSays> i happen to be messing with a pi in a security related roll at this very moment
[6:52] <caitlinwarren> cool! how are you using yours?
[6:52] <JakeSays> well that was not quite accurate. at this very moment i'm experimenting with bare metal development on the pi
[6:53] <JakeSays> but we use them as cheap ARM dev/test machines
[6:53] <JakeSays> saves us from needing several hundred android devices
[6:53] <caitlinwarren> nice, for tool development or exploitation, or?

[6:55] <caitlinwarren> cool :)
[6:57] <caitlinwarren> so consensus vote is that it's likely a hardware problem?
[6:57] <JakeSays> thats my guess, but you wont know until you swap the pi for a new one using the same sd

[11:47] <at0m|c> aphirst: so you can add an extra high port to your sshd_config and forward that
[11:48] <aphirst> yeah i got one suggestion from a friend to forward 22 inside the network on my device to 2222 outside
[11:48] <at0m|c> maybe your router allows incoming on a high port then on the LAN to a lower one. some routers do.
[11:48] <aphirst> can't try that till this evening

[16:09] <zenguy_pc> gordonDrogon, the thing is i want the tools
[16:09] <gordonDrogon> (guessing this is a wi-fi dongle?)
[16:09] <zenguy_pc> but i need to know exactly what i'm getting
[16:10] <gordonDrogon> well, you can change a cap. of that size with just a good fine-tipped soldering iron, some solder wick, flux, good tweezers and a magnifier ...
[16:10] <gordonDrogon> buying a single cap might be trickier!
[16:10] <pksato> capacitos near usb connector, one maked as C1, probably is a 4.7uF ceramic capacitor.
[16:10] <zenguy_pc> i dont need a single cap .. i want a couple since i want to practice
[16:11] <zenguy_pc> pklaus, thank you!
[16:11] <zenguy_pc> pklaus, what could go wrong if that capacitor is too low or too high?

[16:12] <gordonDrogon> its probably just a supply decoupling cap. actual value +/- a magnitude probably isn't important.

[17:58] <SpeedEvil> conor_f: just image the card appropriately
[17:58] <conor_f> I thought I'd be able to ssh into it, but I don't seem to be able to
[17:58] <gordonDrogon> you can install raspbian 'headless'
[17:58] <ppq> https://github.com/debian-pi/raspbian-ua-netinst
[17:59] <gordonDrogon> raspbian will boot & you can then ssh in once you've founbd it's IP address. (wired ethernet)

[18:02] <gordonDrogon> https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/
[18:02] <gordonDrogon> that one.
[18:02] <gordonDrogon> I've no experience of jessie though - all wheezy here still.
[18:03] <conor_f> so if I download wheezy from there and flash it onto my SD card, it'll start an SSH server by default??
[18:03] <gordonDrogon> you'll need to know how to find it's IP address.
[18:03] <conor_f> I can just use nmap, right?
[18:03] <gordonDrogon> yes - it should start sshd by default - well, wheezy does, so I've no reason to doubt that jessie won't.
[18:04] <gordonDrogon> well - nmap usually needs an IP address.
[18:04] <gordonDrogon> so check your router for a recent dhcp lease.
[18:04] <conor_f> 192.168.1.0/24

[18:05] <gordonDrogon> is what I use. put that in ~/bin - change the IP range to match yours and run it.
