[0:47] <jrg> ok. guess i'll stop trying to build bitcoind on this pi for a bit
[0:47] <jrg> maybe i'll restart it when i go to sleep or something
[0:48] <jrg> wish there was some armhf VM you could run that would act like a pi but give it like 4GB of ram lol
[0:48] <jrg> then spit out a disk image

[0:59] * weemsledeux (~textual@unaffiliated/weems) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:01] <mfa298> I think you can also emulate arm with qemu on linux which would give you an environment to compile in similar to a Pi but with more cpu and ram
[1:02] * bberg (~bbergz@unaffiliated/bberg) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[1:03] * bberg (~bbergz@unaffiliated/bberg) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:03] <jrg> yah the compiling on the pi is a no go. i can probably wait it out but the swapping slows it to a crawl

[1:22] <Berg> GrandPa-G: what do you want to achieve
[1:23] * bberg (~bbergz@unaffiliated/bberg) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[1:23] <GrandPa-G> I just need to present one user a simple 2 field form, get it back and do some back in processing.
[1:24] <Berg> if you download flask you look in the arcghive it has examples in a folder
[1:26] <GrandPa-G> I tried to pip flask and it seemed to have errors. I don't mind starting over. How do I remove flask and I will work with bottle. Just need a 1 user web server, lighter the better.
[1:29] <Berg> hmm
[1:30] <Berg> i would try doing sudo apt-get update
[1:30] <Berg> sudo apt-get update
[1:30] <Berg> then reinstall pip and flask
[1:30] <GrandPa-G> i got rid of Flask, on to bottle.
[1:30] <Berg> ok
[1:30] <Berg> bottle has examples on the web site too
[1:30] <GrandPa-G> do you know difference between Flask and bottle?
[1:31] <Berg> not realy i know bottle is one file it seems flask needs to be installed
[1:31] <Berg> bottle you just put the file in your site folder

[2:10] <jrg> oh
[2:10] <jrg> just noticed i had a newer pi with 512MB of ram lol
[2:10] <Zardoz> oh?
[2:10] <jrg> maybe that will work better to build bitcoind
[2:10] * jrg tries
[2:10] * JohnBeales (~johnbeale@dsl-173-206-4-132.tor.primus.ca) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[2:11] <JakeSays> Zardoz: mystery solved. i have an ethernet cable plugged in. lol
[2:11] <Zardoz> lol
[2:12] <jrg> yah seems like the build just eats up far too much ram heh
[2:12] <Zardoz> you try on a pi1a?
[2:12] * JohnBeales (~johnbeale@dsl-173-206-4-132.tor.primus.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:12] <jrg> 832 root 20 0 346504 324204 11680 R 96.5 65.6 1:37.41 cc1plus
[2:12] <jrg> i was heh. i didn't even realize it. i forgot the newer pi1 had 512MB
[2:12] <jrg> and i had one of those lying around too
[2:12] * taza (~taza@unaffiliated/taza) Quit ()
[2:12] <jrg> so i just swapped them out
[2:12] * Viper168 (~Viper@unaffiliated/viper168) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:13] <Zardoz> nice
[2:13] * KindOne (kindone@freenude/topless/kindone) Quit (Quit: .)
[2:14] <jrg> the 512MB isn't enough either tho
[2:14] * Gathis (~TheGrey@unaffiliated/gathis) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[2:14] <Zardoz> ouch
[2:14] <jrg> the swap is already getting ravaged by the build.... it's working a bit better tho as far as loadtime goes
[2:14] * ircuser-1 (~Johnny@158.183-62-69.ftth.swbr.surewest.net) Quit (Quit: because)
[2:15] <jrg> the old pi would completely top out the box
[2:16] * holodoc (~holodoc@unaffiliated/holodoc) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[2:16] <Zardoz> this synology box I got is a beast
[2:17] <Zardoz> I love it
[2:17] * JohnBeales (~johnbeale@dsl-173-206-4-132.tor.primus.ca) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:17] <jrg> i love their interface
[2:17] * monoxane (~monoxane@unaffiliated/monoxane) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:17] <jrg> their webui can't be beat
[2:17] <jrg> but their hardware is way overpriced
[2:17] <Zardoz> it is compleatly awesome so far
[2:17] * JohnBeales (~johnbeale@dsl-173-206-4-132.tor.primus.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:18] <jrg> i built my mom an xpenology box so she can have a local plex server / time machine share / etc over at her place
[2:18] <Zardoz> I got an 8 bay for 400 today
[2:18] <jrg> it's pretty much a synology that isn't a synology :) although they aren't up to 6.x yet
[2:18] <jrg> but i'll give synology one thing. they have the web interface down packed. it's a beautiful interface
[2:18] <Zardoz> I am getting about 80 MB/s right now on my network
[2:19] <jrg> yah. even on my ancient ds411j i get like 100MB/s to/from my freenas box
[2:19] <jrg> and that's a single core 1.2GHz arm
[2:19] <jrg> the biggest problem with synology tho is the ram
[2:19] * k0mp0 (~k0mp0@host86-164-84-196.range86-164.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:19] <jrg> they skimp on it
[2:19] * monoxane (~monoxane@unaffiliated/monoxane) Quit (Client Quit)
[2:20] <Zardoz> I am sure it would be faster but the souce is slow
[2:20] * holodoc (~holodoc@unaffiliated/holodoc) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:20] <Zardoz> yeah I am going to upgrade this one.
[2:20] <Zardoz> think it has 1GB right now
[2:21] <jrg> like i said. for my mom i had an old nas box with an amd A8 in it
[2:21] <jrg> i just turned that into an xpenology box with 16GB of ram
[2:21] <Zardoz> yeah
[2:21] <jrg> it's exactly like a synology minus the lack of ram
[2:21] <jrg> i think their 8 bay model uses an i3 or something
[2:21] <jrg> synology does a lot of things right. i just wish it used zfs :/
[2:21] <Zardoz> setup on this so far suber ez the ui is nice.
[2:22] <jrg> maybe they will consider it after canoncical is done getting sued by the fsf after they release linux with zfs built into their kernel lol
[2:23] <jrg> although i'd give anything if ubuntu swapped over to something else like a bsd kernel lol

[2:52] <plugwash> Nah, I don't bother with anything like that, I have one box (and an older 1GB single core box that occasionally gets used) that I use for manual builds, one box for the autoforwardporter and the rest are buildds
[2:53] <[Saint]> why don't you make the 1GB single core box a distcc master and the others distcc slaves?
[2:53] <[Saint]> The barrier for entry isn't particularly high.
[2:55] <[Saint]> it is more beneficial if you have fast local networking and very fast disks, though.

[2:56] <plugwash> plus it's actually linking that is the most memory heavy part in my experiance and AIUI distcc doesn't distribute linking

[3:01] <[Saint]> you could probably just get away with replacing 'make' with an alias to 'pump make', but passing automatically parsing and inserting compiler flags transparently would get interesting.
[3:01] <[Saint]> dammit, you might've just got me started on a wild goose chase project.
[3:02] <[Saint]> being able to transparently insert distcc into an arbitrary build process would be very interesting to work on.

[12:16] <doublehp> any one good at I2C ? I have soldered a chip, power supply, address pins, sda and scl, and the chip does not ack it's adress; other devices on the bus keep working correctly. Any clue ?
[12:17] <gordonDrogon> it doesn't show up in i2cdetect at all?
[12:17] <doublehp> how to change the I2C bus speed via argument to i2c_bcm2708/i2c_dev modules ?
[12:18] <doublehp> gordonDrogon: "i2cdetect -y 1" shows other deivces, not the new one. Tried two chips. Scope tells incoming signals are fine.
[12:18] <gordonDrogon> power & gnd? faulty chip .. clutching at straws here.
[12:18] <gordonDrogon> I migt be inclined to try the chip on its own on a breadboard on another Pi if possible.
[12:18] <doublehp> 2 faultu chops, no way
[12:18] <CoJaBo> Solder blob under the chip?
[12:19] <CoJaBo> always happpens to me lol
[12:19] <daveake> sda/scl reversed? same address as something else?

[12:19] * TyrfingMjolnir (~Tyrfing@62.92.82.250) has joined #raspberrypi
[12:20] <doublehp> daveake: i will check again for reversal ... same address: impossible. It should be at 0x27, and the whole line is empty
[12:20] <daveake> OK you mentioned address pins so those are worth checking
[12:21] <daveake> power lines also worth checking :)
[12:21] <doublehp> the whole line is empty ... really ... and Microchip did good efforts so that different references can't collide
[12:21] <doublehp> power is good 5V; rPi sends 3V, but the chip should be compatible
[12:22] <Lonefish> "should be", in a situation where it's not working "should be" things can be issues..
[12:22] <daey> im having trouble with wiringPi.h's SPI functionality
[12:23] <daey> it works. but its dirt slow, and it shouldnt be
[12:23] <daey> i have 29uS downtime between each byte. aka. if i send @500khz im effectively sending @250khz
[12:23] <gordonDrogon> daey, are you sending one byte at a time?
[12:24] <gordonDrogon> daey, there is a large latency between transactions - all to do with the kernel. nothing I can change about that in wiringPi unless I bit-bang the hardware.
[12:24] <gordonDrogon> this is well documented.
[12:24] <daey> gordonDrogon: i tried both. that was my first thought as well
[12:24] <doublehp> according to scope, there is a sda/clk inversion ... now gotta find where I did it
[12:25] <daey> sending 1 byte at a time creates like 70uS while sending a whole array creates said 20uS
[12:25] <gordonDrogon> you can achieve almost full wire speed with large buffers, but you'll never overcome the kernel latency.

[12:27] <doublehp> daey: if you use any sleep command, or even if not, you seem to face a scheduler issue; when doing per byte work, the Linux scheduler will make apps turn in the stack; if you try to register exact date of exeution of your loops, you will find that the gaps are exatcly matching the scheduler freq
[12:27] <daey> nah nah nothing like that
[12:27] <daey> interestingly the problem seems to disappear if i ramp up the spi speed
[12:27] <doublehp> drivers also have to deal with scheduler
[12:27] <daey> almost like as if it goes from byte mode into burst mode at a certain frequency :P

[12:29] <gordonDrogon> there is a newer kernel driver I think - that uses DMA. Maybe something to do with that - I've not looked at it recently.

[20:51] <shiftplusone> It's a little more complicated than that. There are certain strings contained in the device driver and in the .dts. If the kernel sees a match between them, it will associate the driver with the device.

[20:56] <shiftplusone> Drzacek: there's another gotcha... not all modules can be loaded using device tree. For example, i2c-dev has to be loaded through /etc/modules. It could be the case that the same applies to this module, but I don't know. I don't have a lot of experience with pitft

[20:58] <shiftplusone> stevie86: when following guides, I recommend that you always refer to original documentation.
[20:58] <mfa298> zombieman: there are a few standards for rs232 over rj45 cables. although if connecting it to a Pi you might also need some logic level shifters.

[20:59] <shiftplusone> stevie86: another tip is that you should check the date of the tutorial and see if it's still relevant. That one is written for wheezy and does rather ugly things to get a newer version of php in there.
