[1:13] <philpep> hi there. I'm trying to use the RPI 3B to connect midi devices, I'd use OpenWrt for that (mostly for the web interface because I'll be headless), with kernel 4.4.7 + some patches taken from rpi/linux. But I've this issue https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=141075 that seems to be solved on raspbian lite (kernel 4.4.17). Is someone aware about what patch from https://github.com/rasp
[1:13] <philpep> berrypi/linux/tree/rpi-4.4.y may fix the issue ?
[1:14] <philpep> seems to be related with the usb driver dwc_otg
[1:15] <grandpa> why does everyone call it the 3b when there is no 3a
[1:16] <grandpa> i mean i get it, it just doesnt make sense to me
[1:16] * grandpa shrugs

[15:05] <gordonDrogon> you ought to be able ot achieve up to about 10K samples/sec of 2 bytes per sample at 1Mhz SPI clock.
[15:05] <gordonDrogon> the issues you'll face is accurately firing off each sample.
[15:05] <\o`> yeah
[15:06] <\o`> it doesn't need to be accurate though
[15:06] <\o`> just ballpark
[15:06] <gordonDrogon> so stick a delay(10) in the sample loop :)
[15:07] <\o`> it's 3 atm :)
[15:07] <gordonDrogon> another strategy might be to sample as fast as possible into a circular buffer - big enough to cope - and include a timestamp in each sample, then have another thread read the buffer but search for the nearest timestamp to the time period you want.
[15:07] <\o`> 10 would be fine as well
[15:07] <\o`> yeah I don't need the frequency to be accurate really
[15:07] <gordonDrogon> what are you sampling?
[15:07] <\o`> I'm not sampling something that needs to be "played back"
[15:07] <\o`> just voltages
[15:07] <gordonDrogon> ok
[15:08] <\o`> which I then average anyway
[15:08] <\o`> it stabilises pretty quickly so I can probably sample less when in "hold mode"

[20:49] <izzyi2d2> idk
[20:49] <izzyi2d2> im sorry =(
[20:49] <izzyi2d2> not that educated on codeing
[20:49] <doublehp> gordonDrogon: the ones I have work fine with classic conf; they fail in 1200 BAUD 7b per word, one stop, even ... what is a rare use case
[20:49] <ali1234> what message?
[20:50] <izzyi2d2> ?
[20:50] <izzyi2d2> which message does it scramble
[20:50] <ali1234> yes
[20:50] <ali1234> doublehp: i concur - USB UARTs are really unreliable

[22:45] <daynaskully> should I buy the pi 3 now that its in stock or wait for the new model, try to get it and then have this same conversation in 8 months
[22:45] <kerio> is there a new model? ;o
[22:45] <GreaseMonkey> might as well get it now, they may have even fixed the temperature issues
[22:45] <kerio> what does it do
[22:45] <daynaskully> soon there will be
[22:45] <kerio> which temperature issues? ;O
[22:45] <daynaskully> i dunno if just smaller form factor or more performance
[22:45] <GreaseMonkey> pi3s get really hot
[22:45] <GreaseMonkey> it does do 640x360 video in various codecs though
[22:46] <kerio> do heatsinks help
[22:46] <GreaseMonkey> probably
[22:46] <GreaseMonkey> i don't have one

[23:04] <grandpa> this show is funny sometimes
[23:05] <uppe> funny thing about this sd card speed issue i'm having is that raw dd speeds are not much higher on the smaller one
[23:05] <methuzla> daynaskully, latest isn't always bestests, depending on what you want to do a pi3 may not be the best choice
[23:05] <kerio> why not :<
[23:05] <uppe> what's the problem if it's not raw bandwidth that's lacking?
[23:05] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[23:06] <kerio> uppe: iops
[23:06] <kerio> the performance for random read/writes on most microSDs is absolute garbage
[23:07] <uppe> yeah, but i would expect iops performance would be better on a larger card..
[23:08] <kerio> i wouldn't count on anything of the sort
[23:08] <kerio> the typical usecase is big-ish file storage
[23:08] <kerio> lots of pictures from a camera and the like
[23:08] <kerio> or video
[23:08] <kerio> that's very sequential I/O

[23:14] <kerio> just benchmark them :)
[23:14] <\o`> oh I forgot!
[23:15] * \o` hands grandpa his bacon and eggs
[23:15] <uppe> kerio: i just benchmarked my 16 and 64 cards, they get approximately the same R/W performance
[23:15] <uppe> don't know how to measure iops
[23:15] <uppe> but the smaller card does everything so much faster. boots up faster, apt-get operations finish in an eyeblink
[23:15] <uppe> the larger card is like watching paint dry
[23:16] * leothrix (~leothrix@elastic/staff/leothrix) has joined #raspberrypi

[23:18] <\o`> uppe, is the larger card legit?
[23:18] <\o`> looking at the driver's source code I can't see any reason at all why it'd be slower
[23:18] <uppe> legit how? they are both brand new sandisk class 10 cards
[23:19] <\o`> yeah, from a legit seller?
[23:19] <uppe> yeah
[23:19] <\o`> that's just weird
[23:19] <\o`> interesting though. I'll look at it more
