[0:00] <Gugg> so I need to set them up?
[0:00] <leftyfb> some will default high, some low
[0:00] <leftyfb> Gugg: yep. Either with commands or in code
[0:00] <Gugg> would that cause the hat sensor board to not work?
[0:01] * dirtyroshi (~dirtyrosh@unaffiliated/dirtyroshi) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:01] <Gugg> so I have used the gpio command to set the pin as output low
[0:01] <leftyfb> Gugg: I don't know what your specific hat board is supposed to do by default with no code to do anything with it
[0:01] <Gugg> and it was still high
[0:01] <Gugg> let me try again right now
[0:01] <leftyfb> Gugg: you have to use the gpio command to enable the pin and set a direction before setting it low or high
[0:01] <Gugg> well I have code. It comes with a library. But when I try to start the library it says it can't see the hat board. It worked fine before and I used it a fair amount
[0:03] <Gugg> and yes, I tried setting the pin to output low and it stayed at 3 volts. I did it both with python using the GPIO module. And commandline with 'GPIO' command
[0:03] <Gugg> let me try again now
[0:04] <leftyfb> if you use the gpio command to set the pin high or low properly, then you should have a directory structure for that pin in /sys/class/gpio/gpio<pin>
[0:05] <Gugg> yes, I haven't set it since I booted the pi
[0:05] <Gugg> I did this a few days ago
[0:05] <Gugg> let me try again now
[0:07] <Gugg> so I used the command 'gpio write 3 0'
[0:07] <Gugg> which I believe should set pin 3 to low
[0:07] <Gugg> and that directory did not change
[0:07] * defsdoor (~andy@cpc35-sutt4-2-0-cust184.19-1.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:08] <leftyfb> cat /sys/class/gpio/gpio3/direction
[0:08] <leftyfb> what does that tell you?
[0:08] <Gugg> when I do 'gpio readall' the pin is still set to 'In'
[0:08] <leftyfb> so that's input
[0:08] <leftyfb> you can't set value on pins set as input
[0:09] <leftyfb> that take data in
[0:09] <leftyfb> they*
[0:09] <leftyfb> you need to set the direction to output
[0:10] <Gugg> the command 'cat /sys/...' no such file or direction
[0:10] <Gugg> does 'gpio write' not set it to output?
[0:10] <leftyfb> you haven't setup the pin
[0:10] <leftyfb> no
[0:10] <leftyfb> like I said
[0:10] <leftyfb> you need to enable(export) the pin to setup the directory structure, then you need to set it's direction
[0:10] <leftyfb> then, and only then can you change values
[0:10] <Gugg> I see
[0:11] <leftyfb> gpio export 3 out
[0:11] <leftyfb> try that
[0:11] <leftyfb> then; cat /sys/class/gpio/gpio3/direction
[0:11] <leftyfb> if that says out, then you can now change it's value with write
[0:15] <Gugg> I see
[0:15] <Gugg> it does say out now
[0:16] <Gugg> thanks for the help
[0:16] * sphenxes01 (~sphenxes@81-5-225-44.hdsl.highway.telekom.at) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:17] <Gugg> Iso now it's set to low/0
[0:17] <Gugg> but I'm still seeing a voltage
[0:18] * nerdboy (~sarnold@gentoo/developer/nerdboy) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:18] * mal_will (uid195162@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-xfbkxilyhijzlnjk) Quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
[0:19] <Gugg> there is a file called 'active low' in the folder
[0:19] <Gugg> and a file that says 'value' set to 0
[0:19] <Gugg> I tried both the physical pin 3 and BCM pin 3 and both are still 3v
[0:20] * sphenxes (~sphenxes@81-5-225-44.hdsl.highway.telekom.at) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[0:20] <leftyfb> Gugg: pin 3 is probably a bad example...
[0:20] * RusAlex (~Chel@185.16.56.248) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:21] <leftyfb> Gugg: try pin #7 (GPIO4)
[0:21] <Gugg> ok
[0:21] <leftyfb> gpio -g export 3 out
[0:21] <leftyfb> er
[0:21] <leftyfb> gpio -g export 4 out
[0:21] <leftyfb> -g is for gpio pin#
[0:21] <leftyfb> don't go by physical pin #'s. Most things utilize the GPIO pin assignments

[0:22] * fatalhalt (~fatalhalt@c-73-246-193-29.hsd1.il.comcast.net) Quit (Max SendQ exceeded)
[0:23] <leftyfb> Gugg: physical pin# 3 is i2c btw. A pin I tend to ignore and I'm not sure can be utilized as a normal gpio

[0:29] <Gugg> gotcha
[0:31] <Gugg> ok so I still see it outputting 3 volts
[0:31] <Gugg> I exported then did 'gpio write 4 0'
[0:31] <Gugg> should that said it low?
[0:34] <leftyfb> gpio -g write 4 0

[8:10] <folatt> Hello, If I turn on my RPi3 and it has no SD card in it, should I see anything on my monitor?
[8:11] <ShorTie> nop
[8:11] <folatt> Because I'm not getting any screen with my SD card either, but the installation I have on it was based on RPi2.
[8:12] <ShorTie> can't use a old rpi2 image on a rpi3
[8:12] <folatt> Okay, so that means that I need to reinstall the OS :)
[8:12] <ShorTie> it's a land before time thing
[8:13] <ShorTie> you can stick it in a rpi2 and update it
[8:13] <ShorTie> then it should work
[8:14] <folatt> Oh, I haven't seen that movie since I was a child decades ago.
[8:14] <folatt> How is it like a land before time?
[8:15] <ShorTie> your trying to use land (os image) before the rpi3 was invented

[23:37] <Alpha1125> I want to use a raspberry pi to talk to a 16bit shift register IC. (example, SN54LS673), so I can control a bunch of relays. I know I could use a 1:1 ratio of GPIO to Relays... but I'm trying to be fancy for the sake of saving GPIO pins (for giggles). Does anyone know of a library to do this already or smarter better solution?

[23:53] <Alpha1125> My intentions is to use as little GPIO pins as possible... I had ~13 pins connected up to my raspberry pi, to control my in ground sprinkler system (10 zones, 1 sensors, gnd, 5vdc... ). It was a little much for the PI. If I'm able to send a the binary as serial to the bit shift register (or something a like), I can get the pins augmented to the other device.

[23:57] <MARPATdroid> I know you can do serial over the GPIO pins, I've never done it, but I believe it is natively supported.
[23:57] <stiv> Alpha1125, sounds like a job for a 1-of-N decoder
[23:57] <Jeebiss> Looking for someone who is familar with 433 RF and might be able to give me a little insight
[23:57] <MARPATdroid> I'm also 100% sure I'm not understanding what you're putting down I'm kind of a noob
[23:58] <Alpha1125> stiv: got a IC I can look up the datasheet for?
