[0:12] <alsetema> Hello people. I am having an issue with SSH and my raspberry pi. We are both connected in the same network, and can both ping eachother (my laptop to the pi and from the pi to my laptop), the issue is that I cannot SSH into the pi from my laptop, it times out (nor can I ssh from the pi to my laptop). The firewall seems fine on both ends since its alowing port 22 and the service is indeed running.
[0:12] <alsetema> This said, why could it be happening?
[0:13] <alsetema> (this has just begun happening today)
[0:14] <erg> basic suggestion, but maybe username/password are wrong
[0:14] * finlstrm (~finlstrm@ip70-188-141-213.ri.ri.cox.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:14] <alsetema> Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, from my laptop to pc it says timed out (ssh)
[0:14] <alsetema> So i can't even get to type my password
[0:15] * choki (~weechat@unaffiliated/choki) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 1.9.1)
[0:15] * kingmanor (~kingmanor@cpe-72-231-1-104.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:16] <erg> sounds like sshd is not running. ps aux | grep sshd -- i have two processes
[0:17] <erg> it looks like you can use ``sudo raspi-config`` to enable/disable, among other ways
[0:17] * kingmanor (~kingmanor@cpe-72-231-1-104.nyc.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:18] <erg> three sshd even
[0:18] <alsetema> Yep i have two processes as well, one for root and the other for pi
[0:19] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[0:19] * mossman93 (~mossman93@unaffiliated/mossman93) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:20] <alsetema> and accordinng to "service ssh status" it is listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22 and :: port 22, which for what i know means all ip's (?)
[0:20] * AaronMT (~textual@2607:fea8:3c9f:f0e8:5caa:1c24:9317:f64a) Quit (Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com)
[0:22] * kingmanor (~kingmanor@cpe-72-231-1-104.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[0:22] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:24] <alsetema> hmmm it also says the service is running under the -D flag, any ideas about that/
[0:24] <alsetema> ?*
[0:25] * dconroy (~dconroy@12.168.15.18) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:26] <erg> can you ssh in locally?
[0:27] <alsetema> Let me try
[0:27] * dlech (~dlech@108-198-5-147.lightspeed.okcbok.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:27] <alsetema> yep, it works fine
[0:27] <alsetema> (ssh 127.0.0.1)
[0:28] <erg> how about ssh 192.168....
[0:29] * en1gma (~en1gma@166.181.86.37) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:29] <alsetema> Yep, that works too (If i put the pi's address)
[0:29] <alsetema> from the pi itself i mean
[0:30] * dconroy (~dconroy@12.168.15.18) Quit (Client Quit)
[0:32] * nighty- (~nighty@s229123.ppp.asahi-net.or.jp) Quit (Quit: Disappears in a puff of smoke)
[0:35] * Lorduncan (~Thunderbi@77.227.165.12) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:36] <alsetema> Urh this is leaving me puzzled
[0:37] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:37] <erg> alsetema: not sure what to try next. if you're logging in a root, that has to be explicitly enabled for network access
[0:38] <erg> in /etc/ssh/sshd_config you'd have ``PermitRootLogin yes``
[0:38] <alsetema> Not really, just logging ing (or trying) to do so as the regula pi user
[0:38] * choki (~weechat@unaffiliated/choki) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:41] <alsetema> after i use a very very verbose command, after the connecting sequence and some time it just says it has timed out :/
[0:42] <stiv> are you connecting to an ip address or a name?
[0:42] <erg> i dunno, maybe your router is filtering port 22. can you ssh from your pi to the other computer?
[0:43] * bberg` (~bbergz@unaffiliated/bberg) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:43] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:43] <alsetema> @stiv I am connecting to the lan ip address of the pi
[0:43] <alsetema> I cannot connect from the pi to the other computer either, It times out
[0:44] <stiv> but you can ping the ip ?
[0:44] <alsetema> I can indeed
[0:44] <alsetema> both ways
[0:44] <alsetema> My phone cannot connect to the RPI either (ssh) but it can connect to my laptop
[0:44] <erg> try this and see if you can hit some different ports: python -m http.server 8000
[0:45] <alsetema> and my laptop can ssh to other Ips (i tried with a free service onlinewith demo accounts)
[0:45] * jcjordyn120 (~jcjordyn1@unaffiliated/jcjordyn120) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[0:45] <alsetema> @erg, on the pi?
[0:45] * bberg (~bbergz@unaffiliated/bberg) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:45] <erg> alsetema: from either, if your router is stopping traffic on port 22 maybe some other ports are open. i'm out of ideas otherwise
[0:46] <alsetema> It tells me there is no module named like so
[0:47] <erg> python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000
[0:47] <alsetema> wait a moment
[0:47] <erg> that one is python2, first was python3
[0:48] <alsetema> My bad, it does not allow my phone to connect to my laptop either
[0:48] <alsetema> weird
[0:49] <alsetema> so, that command is stuck with "Serving HTTP on 0.0.0.0 port 8000 ..."

[11:29] <Kliment> Hey, is there some way to use an external GPIO trigger to display images with fixed latency from trigger to display? I can bind a core and use that for checking the GPIO, but afaict the HDMI output runs at a fixed frequency
[11:33] <bq> You also have no guarantee your thread doing the drawing wouldn't be preempted, surely?
[11:34] <bq> Unless you exclude all other processes from that core
[11:35] <gordonDrogon> Kliment, yes - ish - it depends on the latency you're after - milliseconds ought to be fine, microseconds not so fine.
[11:36] <Kliment> bq: Yeah, I'd bind it to a core
[11:36] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Anything is fine, as long as it's constant
[11:36] <bq> Out of interest, does that limit that core to your task, or your task to the core?
[11:37] <gordonDrogon> you'll never get constant because the Pi has dynamic RAM and runs a multi-user, pre-emptive multi-tasking OS.
[11:37] <gordonDrogon> even binding it to a core.

[11:37] <bq> Right
[11:37] <bq> Thought so
[11:37] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: In that case, I'll probably have to skip the OS :)
[11:38] <gordonDrogon> don't forget the dynamic ram refresh then.
[11:38] <gordonDrogon> (and the video refresh)
[11:39] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Well, what I'm after is to be able to hit a specific frame, when it refreshes
[11:39] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Since the video refresh frequency is constant, there is no significant latency jitter there
[11:40] <gordonDrogon> are you looking to effectively play video at video frame rates, or just change a static image in response to a trigger?
[11:42] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: The latter - but at approximately 2/3 of the video refresh rate
[11:42] * jcjordyn120 (~jcjordyn1@unaffiliated/jcjordyn120) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[11:43] <gordonDrogon> if you can get all the images in RAM, I'd give it a go - simple poll the pin in (e.g.) a C program then blit the images to the frambebuffer.
[11:44] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Yeah, that's my initial plan, I'm wondering if that works in terms of the video hardware, or whether that implements its own buffering of some form
[11:44] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: I don't suppose there's any external interrupts I can use for triggering
[11:44] <gordonDrogon> you can poke pixels directly into the frambuffer without issues.

[11:44] <gordonDrogon> there is a way to get interrupts into a user program, but the latency is in the order of 150S.
[11:44] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Cool, but will they get displayed on the next refresh?
[11:44] * DingoSaar (~hagen@pD9E09C04.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[11:45] <gordonDrogon> it's obviously well under 1S if you write a kernel module.
[11:45] <Kliment> gordonDrogon: Well, I could run a bare metal application and skip the kernel entirely
[11:46] <gordonDrogon> I've no idea - I'm not sure you can get notified of a video refresh event. I wrote a basic interpreter that pokes pixels/images via the SDL library and it works fine, but I've not tried to make it play images one after the other, however it does have a double-buffer mode which I use.

[11:47] <gordonDrogon> SDL was good enough for my applications.

[12:00] <[Saint]> gordonDrogon: Kliment: surely you could just build the mainline RPF kernel with preempt disabled, no?
[12:00] * lankanmon (~LKNnet@CPE64777dd7e053-CM64777dd7e050.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[12:01] <Kliment> [Saint]: Yes, or just bind my process to a fixed core
[12:02] <[Saint]> I'd much rather just build 4.14-rc7 w/ preempt disabled than jump to the relative hellhole that is RiscOS
[12:02] <gordonDrogon> I've no experience of binding to a core, but the kernel will take interrupts - it has to - e.g. to maintain time, respond to ethernet pings, usb events and so on.
[12:03] <[Saint]> I just know the option exists because I was staring at it some ~2 minutes ago before I fired off make.
[12:03] <[Saint]> building the kernel with preempt disabled is most definitely a thing.
[12:03] <gordonDrogon> so how does it task switch then?
[12:04] <gordonDrogon> how would fork() work, etc.
[12:04] <[Saint]> I dunno man, run make menuconfig and ask it I suppose.
[12:04] <[Saint]> It's a thing, it exists. That's all I know on the topic.
[12:04] <gordonDrogon> there were 3 options last time I ran that - desktop, server and in-between...

[12:05] <gordonDrogon> so it's changed?

[12:05] <[Saint]> Does menuconfig offer more than 3 options? Yes. Since forever.
[12:05] <Kliment> The way I understand it, preempt stops running processes mid-execution to do scheduling, whereas with non-preempt it only stops them when they make a call into the kernel.
[12:06] <[Saint]> Oooooh, derp. I parsed that very wrong.
[12:06] <Kliment> So in this case, fork() would be the event that causes the process to be stopped, and then the scheduler would run and decide what runs next
[12:07] <Kliment> However, when binding a process to a core, and excluding said core from the scheduler, the scheduler will never need to stop that process to run something else on the same core
[12:07] <[Saint]> Yeah, sorry, there's desktop, server, something I can't remember, and disabled. But you need to run a gamut of other menuconfig options to get it to show up.
[12:07] <Kliment> And preempt is not relevant in that case
[12:08] <gordonDrogon> I have had good results running a process with real-time schedulling though - I'm currently running something on a Pi 0 that multiplexes 86 LEDs and a couple of dozen switches and it's flicker free for the most part.

[17:44] <lopta> Thanks BurtyB
[17:44] <HighInBC> or is that the camera...
[17:45] <DammitJim> I like the idea of configuring buttons on the pi and see what the system is doing

[17:46] <ShorTie> backup monitors
[17:46] <Kontraband> the 3.5" lcd is nice with a stylus
[17:47] <DammitJim> I wonder why the "keypad kits" are 16x2 and not defined as 128x32
[17:48] <HighInBC> because 16x2 displays while made up of many pixels tend to have simple controllers that take and display text data
[17:49] <HighInBC> and the pixels are grouped in letter sized boxes and can't be used for general graphics because of the gaps between the pixel groups
[17:49] <DammitJim> Kontraband, any recommendation on a 3.5" lcd?
[17:49] <DammitJim> HighInBC, thanks for clarifying that
[17:49] <HighInBC> np
[17:50] <Kontraband> there is a 3.5" Kuman kit with a case on amazon for like 25 bucks
[17:51] <Kontraband> the 7" touch with a case is maybe $70 and that is alot nicer

[17:57] <ali1234> there is only the one display available for it

But still when trying apt-get update I still get the same error https://pastebin.com/q7Y4Jw2w, is it due to my network settings on RPi? Ideas? Thanks :)

[22:40] <shauno> down the rabbit hole, alice
[22:40] <gordonDrogon> edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change mirror doo dah into a real server - e.g. archive.raspbian.org
[22:41] <shauno> if you've been messing with your gateway, I'd check if you can reach *anything* off your network first. eg, ping 8.8.8.8. if that doesn't work, apt is way down the list of things to fix
[22:42] <gordonDrogon> although hang on - those sites are up for me.
[22:44] <palmtree> solved! :D
[22:44] <palmtree> but... just by modifyin the /etc/resolv.conf file specifying my gateway! That's all

[23:01] <leftyfb> palmtree: to be clear, your "gateway" is probably your router which also acts as a dns server. You cannot put just a gateway ip into /etc/resolv.conf. It needs to be a valid dns server. In your case, it sounds like it is.
