[1:01] <r3> my first guess? line too long? Does it work with a shorter sequence?
[1:02] <r3> ~170350 is a hella long line
[1:03] * mossman93 (~mossman93@unaffiliated/mossman93) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:04] <dan2wik> sequence?
[1:05] <r3> what does "getconf ARG_MAX" return?
[1:05] <dan2wik> 2097152
[1:07] <r3> sorry, I was thinking that the long long line was a sequence of tones you wanted played as I am not familiar with aplay ...
[1:08] * TReK (~UnFaQ@unaffiliated/trek) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:08] <dan2wik> aplay -l should list devices
[1:08] <r3> like this: http://www.commandlinefu.com/commands/view/8275/grub2-set-super-mario-as-startup-tune ... sorry I was thinking wrongly. Um, well, yeah, it should list devices. Is there anything funky in dmesg?
[1:08] <dan2wik> yeah about that
[1:08] <dan2wik> https://i.imgur.com/RJXAZYF.png
[1:09] <dan2wik> I think my SD card pooped out
[1:09] <r3> yikes
[1:10] * mossman93 (~mossman93@unaffiliated/mossman93) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[1:10] <r3> I've seen that on an SD card that's gone bad
[1:10] * mossman93 (~mossman93@unaffiliated/mossman93) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:10] <r3> (where the shell loses its mind)
[1:10] <r3> reboot and hope?
[1:11] <r3> ps "getconf ARG_MAX" shows you the maximum length of a command-line command. Less some overhead and environment stuff. Again, I was thinking that long string was an attempt to play a tune. Sorry.
[1:11] <dan2wik> Its hanging during boot
[1:12] <r3> sounds like a bad SD card to me, for sure. Hope you had a backup and that it's under some form of warranty? I was just saying earlier how I seem to be hitting a maximum life of an 8GB SanDisk Class 4 in a Rpi2 that's been on for 2 years 4 months.
[1:12] * Syliss (~Syliss@asa1.digitalpath.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:13] * binary01 (~binary01@cpe-74-71-6-187.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:13] <r3> you might try putting it into another linux system and running fsck on it, but I've not had much luck with that either.
[1:14] * zzzoid (~zzzoid@85-195-242-83.fiber7.init7.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[1:15] <dan2wik> I think I'll just wipe it, everything on there was newly cloned from github anyway
[1:15] <r3> worth a shot. If you use 'dd' to put a new image back on it, keep an eye in dmesg for media errors. That's a sure indicator of an SD card going bad.
[1:15] * pklaus (~pklaus@p200300CB13C03500F0397240FE18963D.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:16] * abu0 (~abu0@aaex21.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:17] <r3> if it is bad, and it's rather new, you might want to examine the power supply to your Pi. I've heard tales of bad power causing all sorts of problems.

[1:28] * TheSin (~TheSin@d199-126-166-83.abhsia.telus.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:28] <dan2wik> Its outputting 3.95v

[1:37] <r3> oh my, yeah, that's not near enough :(
[1:37] <r3> in that case, that SD card might be OK if you gave the system 5V
[1:39] <dan2wik> I could get a new SD card too, They are $4 for 8GB ones at the local computer store
[1:39] <dan2wik> I might buy a few
[1:40] <dan2wik> They are the class 10 sandisk ones too
[1:40] <r3> nice
[1:40] <r3> I need to order more to fix/upgrade the herd
[1:43] <r3> or go up to 32GB ones if you need the space
[1:44] * secvalve (~iaeofjgsk@gateway/tor-sasl/iaeofjgskjb) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[1:45] * t0aster0ven (~iaeofjgsk@gateway/tor-sasl/iaeofjgskjb) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:46] * Arcaelyx (~Arcaelyx@2601:646:c200:27a1:3530:65d4:1f23:3f55) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[1:46] <dan2wik> The only time I've filled a card was when I left it recording overnight and woke up to a ton of errors in console
[1:51] * abu0 (~abu0@aaex21.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:51] <r3> I am giving serious consideration to the idea (that just rather dawned on me today) of booting the Pis into a Read Only filesystem while mounting the large NAS to handle data collection and logs. These logs and data already get copied to the NAS nightly via cron, so why have the middle bit even there, I am thinking.

[2:29] <ali1234> r3: it is a good approach
[2:29] <ali1234> even better is to send the logs over the network using MQTT or something
[2:30] <ali1234> but it depends what data you are collecting
[2:30] * Ivoah (uid49352@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-wbxvvwncbkowrfgz) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:31] <ali1234> once you implement MQTT you can replace the Pi with a esp8266, which has MQTT built in...
[2:31] <ali1234> and that doesn't even need an SD card at all
[2:31] <ali1234> and also uses far less power

[13:17] <Fr0stBit> H4ndy: Thanks pal :)
[13:18] <H4ndy> I think the old amazon firetv stick has a slightly better version then the Pi
[13:18] <H4ndy> so you can use that as a rough baseline
[13:18] <GenteelBen> Fr0stBit it's about 20x slower than the GPU in a modern phone.
[13:19] <GenteelBen> It's basically terrible for anything GPU-intensive.
[13:19] <GenteelBen> 2012-ish = 5 years old = slow as fuck
[13:19] <Fr0stBit> I've been told that ODROID-XU4 could be a better choice
[13:19] <GenteelBen> The RPi isn't a gaming board - it's a hobbyist board.
[13:19] <GenteelBen> Fr0stBit: basically any micro-computer board is going to be a bad choice unless it's less than a year old.
[13:20] <Fr0stBit> GenteelBen: Are there such things as `gaming boards`
[13:20] <GenteelBen> Qualcom, Samsung and Apple introduce a new GPU at least once a year, and microcomputer boards tend to be 2/3/4 year old tech.
[13:20] <GenteelBen> Fr0stBit, I don't think so but I'll check.
[13:21] <GenteelBen> Can't find anything,.
[13:21] <GenteelBen> Have a look through here https://www.slant.co/topics/1629/~single-board-computers
[13:21] <H4ndy> there are allwinner boards with a somewhat recent MALI400 GPU by Samsumg
[13:21] <H4ndy> but you are pretty much limited to Android on those things

[18:46] <Demannu> Question: I'm running a Pi3 with onboard wifi acting as a normal client. I have a script called wificonnect, that does various house keeping and reporting when it connects to the internet. On first boot, it runs properly.. however if I take my Pi out of wifi range and then back, it still connects to the network but doesn't run the wificonnect script. I have my full setup in a git repo if you want to look.
[18:46] <Demannu> I'm unsure why the script is running on first boot, but not subsequent reconnection
[18:47] <r3> I wonder what would happen if you restart the wpa_supplicant daemon after an AP restart
[18:47] <r3> ^^ to nForce
[18:48] <Demannu> Oh hm. So the file resides in /etc/network/if-up.d and my /etc/network/interfaces file has iface wlan0 inet manual \n \t wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and then each wifi has an id_str that corresponds to an iface networkname inet dhcp entry in interfaces
[18:48] * pavlushka (~pavlushka@ubuntu/member/pavlushka) has joined #raspberrypi
[18:49] <Demannu> Could my wlan0 interface not be truely going down when it d/cs.
[18:49] <Demannu> So wificonnect won't be called when it does reconned
[18:49] <Demannu> reconnect*
[18:49] <Syliss> the wlan0 doesnt go down when it disconnects
[18:49] <Syliss> its always active looking
[18:50] <Syliss> unless you have it sleep when it disconnects and then runs after sleep
[18:50] <Demannu> Hm, I was afraid of that but wasn't sure on how to verify. The wificonnect script is only intended to run once per internet connection

[19:57] <oq> zfs is fine if you're homelabbing, but otherwise synology is a great option
[19:57] * mlankhorst (~kvirc@ubuntu/member/mlankhorst) has joined #raspberrypi
[19:58] <mfa298> my main storage is zfs, but you should still back it up onto some other medium (raid only protects you from hardware failure - not theft, drivers, software or human error)
[19:58] <mlankhorst> I'm running gstrpicamsrc with variable fps, but on a 720p the upper bound seems to be 1s now, I think it was higher before, could this be from a change in the drivers?
[19:59] <mlankhorst> older change probably, for a while it didn't even want to go to an exposure time of 1s
[20:00] <mfa298> zfs can be great for larger storage as well I did something like a 300GB zfs setup a few years ago for a job (I'm not sure I'd trust ext4 for that sort of storage)
[20:00] <r3> I have other protection from theft ;)
[20:00] <kerio> wow 300gb
[20:00] <kerio> that's over half of my ssd :^)
[20:01] <red9> r3, "warning for the bloodthirsty dogs" ? ;)
[20:01] <mfa298> sorry, 300TB, getting my units wrong - lots and lots of spinnign rust.
[20:01] <oq> you could mdadm + btrfs
[20:03] <mfa298> btrfs is the only other thing I might consider for that scale, but it certainly wasn't mature enoguh when I did that. I'd hope you don't need mdadm with btrfs though.
[20:04] <mfa298> also that wasn't on Linux and certainly not something I'd attempt on a Pi so is probably realming into the offtopic (especially as I think there was an ontopic question just now)
[20:04] <kerio> doesn't btrfs still crash horribly on anything more complicated than a mirror
[20:04] <r3> remembering the days, we had a medium-sized array built up in an 32x32 configuration. I was loud, but so was the whole lab. I got sidetracked one day and was able to "animate" the access LEDs like it was a small screen. Was working on a way to get the game of "life" to run on it when I was pulled to other duties. Nearly had it.
[20:04] <kerio> mlankhorst: what do you mean by 1s
[20:05] <kerio> also ew penguin
[20:06] <oq> mfa298: well the idea is that btrfs's raid5/6's are buggy at the moment so you use mdadm for the raid and btrfs for the filesystem
[20:06] <mlankhorst> kerio: exposure time of 1s, had up to 3s before
[20:06] <kerio> oq: jesus christ how horrifying
[20:07] <mfa298> or just use freebsd/smartos/... and have native zfs that just works :)

[22:17] <caoliver> In the words of Emo Philips: Some mornings it just doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps.
[22:17] <gordonDrogon> there is usually unique entries in /dev/serial/by-id, etc.
[22:17] <caoliver> The dongles don't have unique sernos by default.
[22:17] <caoliver> That's the issue.
[22:18] <caoliver> So how do you know where any of them wind up?
[22:19] <gordonDrogon> then they're broken.
[22:19] <caoliver> With the FT232RL, there's a utility you can use to program them. There was supposed to be one that works with the PL2303HXD, but it requires the USB supply to get boosted to 6.5v. Even then, I'm not getting the sernos recorded.

[22:20] <gordonDrogon> ok
[22:20] <caoliver> So the final vendor burns it with his own ID.
[22:21] * caoliver changed the serno on the FT to "WOMBAT00" for a brief time.
[22:21] <gordonDrogon> oddly enough I was lookig for a 4-port usb serial unit earlier - however it's cheaper to buy 4 individual ones and a cheap hub - by a mile )-:
[22:21] <caoliver> Interesting.
[22:24] <caoliver> When I arrived, the box had a bunch of pl2303ta dongles, and those require adding an external serial rom to have a unique identifier, and we don't have a surface mount workstation at this ranch.
[22:25] <caoliver> I had hoped the hxd version would have alleviated that grief, but no. Too easy.

[22:28] * mujjingun (uid228218@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-imrsiphiatinqlvb) Quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
[22:28] <caoliver> Not now. :(
[22:28] <gordonDrogon> seems there's a lot of vtxxx on ebay but no keyboards... bizarre.
[22:29] <gordonDrogon> I'm after hooking up to a couple of PDP8's.
[22:29] <caoliver> Last time I had a personal DEC was the vt100 I had at my appt on loan from my CS dept.
[22:29] <GenteelBen> caoliver, your time would be better spent creating remote sensors for the Pi which can be embedded in our colons.
[22:29] <GenteelBen> Post-IoT, it's IoC - Internet of Colons.
[22:30] * caoliver is not interesting in digital colonoscopies.
[22:30] <GenteelBen> But think of the anal possibilities, caoliver.
[22:30] * caoliver has been traumatized by the scope once if his life so far.
[22:31] * jncunha (~jncunha@a89-152-227-73.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:32] <caoliver> I suppose the smarter thing to do is just use PIs as thin clients. That's likely cheaper than the DEC terminals.
