[2:17] <harmlessgryphon> http://thisdavej.com/beginners-guide-to-installing-node-js-on-a-raspberry-pi/
[2:17] <stormbytes> apparently nodesource doesn't support Arm6
[2:17] <stormbytes> at least not when i try to install 9.x
[2:18] * dreamon_ (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Max SendQ exceeded)
[2:18] <harmlessgryphon> Is it nodesource or 9.x specifically? As in, there isn't a release candidate for it yet>

[2:32] <RaMcHiP> Isnt my mysql_server supposed to ask for a root password on setup?
[2:32] * snowkidind (~textual@216.15.40.124) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:32] <shauno> it works, but the version in the repos is ancient. the nodesource builds are popular & well-maintained, but they don't do arm6, so the zero is left out. (the nodejs.org builds should work, but they use tarballs instead of packages)
[2:32] <harmlessgryphon> It should when you set it up, from what I remember...
[2:32] <RaMcHiP> hmmmmm
[2:33] <harmlessgryphon> It's been a while, tho. I'm pretty sure it did ask me for a master password, because I have to use it when doing admin.
[2:33] <RaMcHiP> yeah this is weird
[2:33] <RaMcHiP> I need to set a password atleast I can login under root without a PW
[2:35] * nils_2 (~nils_2@unaffiliated/nils-2/x-2480262) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:35] <harmlessgryphon> I seem to remember there's a way to log in without a password locally and do that
[2:36] <harmlessgryphon> maybe not
[2:36] <RaMcHiP> so confused I setup mysql and something is jacked I think. I did sudo apt-get install mysql_server and it installed. when I type sudo mysql -uroot it lets me in but when I type mysql -uroot -p and type my PW in manually under user pi I cannot get in :/
[2:37] <RaMcHiP> so when I setup phpmyadmin I cannot connect through root or make a DB :/
[2:37] <harmlessgryphon> Are you comfortable with the command line?

[2:57] <RaMcHiP> nor can I reset it :/
[2:57] <mlelstv> you need to start the mysql server with --skip-grant-tables option

[3:01] <mlelstv> why should it ask?
[3:01] <RaMcHiP> I did the sudo apt-get install mysql_server

[3:02] <mlelstv> maybe the install script asks for an initial password

[3:02] <mlelstv> but that's not strictly necessary
[3:02] <RaMcHiP> well then what would be the default mysql root password then?
[3:03] <mlelstv> none
[3:03] <RaMcHiP> access denied with none...
[3:03] <mlelstv> mysql -u root without -p
[3:03] <RaMcHiP> then I should just be able to do mysql -uroot and it should log me in even under user pi
[3:03] <RaMcHiP> that is not the case.
[3:04] <mlelstv> otherwise, start with --skip-grant-tables and look at the table entries.
[3:04] <RaMcHiP> for?
[3:04] <RaMcHiP> I mean I can look at them all day long but I have no clue what I am looking for...
[3:05] <RaMcHiP> I have tried several times with --skip-grant-tables and maria will NOT let me change root password with it..
[3:05] <mlelstv> traditional grant tables are 'user' and 'db'. Newer grant tables are named *_priv
[3:05] <mlelstv> but you said you could change the crypted password
[3:06] <RaMcHiP> there was one method that allowed me too but it didnt stick

[3:08] <mlelstv> if --skip-grant-tables lets you login, then it must be an entry in the grant tables that prevents access
[3:08] <RaMcHiP> I would think this would be a fairly well documented problem because I am just using debian lite installing apache, php, mysql and phpmyadmin and absolutely nothing is working passed mysql...
[3:08] <RaMcHiP> I am following this https://pchelp.ricmedia.com/setup-lamp-server-raspberry-pi-3-complete-diy-guide/
[3:09] <mlelstv> you could have configured external authentication... do you?
[3:09] <RaMcHiP> I just do sudo passwd and then sudo raspi-config then set pi password
[3:09] <mlelstv> rpi isn't different from other Linux boxes regarding mysql
[3:09] <RaMcHiP> I have no idea what the external authentication is..
[3:10] <mlelstv> mysql uses its own private accounts, it has nothing to do with the system accounts.
[3:10] <RaMcHiP> I have always been asked for a root password at install on ANY other mysql install...
[3:10] <mlelstv> so 'root' is not the uid=0 superuser but the mysql account of the same name :)
[3:10] <RaMcHiP> I understand this
[3:10] <RaMcHiP> but I dont have the default password for it and it isnt allowing me to login so I can literally do nothing...
[3:11] <mlelstv> you can configure it to use system accounts or e.g. LDAP for authentication instead
[3:11] <RaMcHiP> ohhh god no, I just want to set the dang password at install...
[3:11] <mlelstv> so look what is in the user table for user 'root' and what is in the db table for database 'mysql'.
[3:11] <RaMcHiP> or atleast be able to have some quick way of finding what the default is...
[3:11] <mlelstv> there is no default password in mysql
[3:12] <mlelstv> you set it or not
[3:12] <RaMcHiP> then why cant I login?
[3:12] <mlelstv> how did you change the password?
[3:12] <RaMcHiP> if there is no default and I cannot log in with no password then I am totally lost
[3:12] <RaMcHiP> that was on a previous attempt
[3:13] <mlelstv> no, with --skip-grant-tables, no passwords are queried or checked.
[3:13] <RaMcHiP> I am now on a fresh install stopping at mysql before proceeding to phpmyadmin
[3:13] <mlelstv> so in that mode you can read and write everything.
[3:13] <RaMcHiP> not with maria
[3:13] <RaMcHiP> it will not let me change passwords..

[5:30] <peerce> anyways, databases are for relational data. not sure what you mean by 'organizing text data', organizing how ?
[5:31] * cybrian (~b@ibeep.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[5:31] <peerce> relational data is organized as tables with fields, and relations between said tables. for example, a table of job types, another table of employees, and a relation table with (jobid, employeeid)
[5:32] <DulceEt> peerce put them all like a Calc spreadsheet. I work with license keys; then I need to register the data I send the key, the key itself, what software is related to each key
[5:33] <DulceEt> and do it manually is awful
[5:34] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) has joined #raspberrypi
[5:34] <peerce> a relational database is a tool you use from application programs, typically custom written. the end user sees the app, the app uses the database as a means of storing the structured data.
[5:34] * davr0s (~textual@host81-155-65-221.range81-155.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[5:34] <DulceEt> Hm
[5:35] <peerce> there /are/ tools like LibreOffice "Data" which use a database and provide you with a high level design tool, where you define your tables, and data entry forms, and reports, and such, then run the generated 'app'
[5:35] <peerce> but I dunno if LO Data will run at all well in a Pi environment.
[5:37] <DulceEt> I think something like "insert the licence key/the date you send the license/whatever you want into a web form to send it into a db/server located in a RPi connected into your LAN" would be nice
[5:38] <DulceEt> LO Data? Do you mean Base?
[5:38] <peerce> oh yeah, Base. sorrty, haven't used it in years.
[5:38] <peerce> Data Base, same differnce :-p
[5:39] <DulceEt> Yeah, looks easy to work with.
[5:40] <DulceEt> But how to, e.g., insert or modify data in a easier way? (Like the "insert license through web form" I said before?)
[5:42] <peerce> a web form implies you have a webserver, and some sort of web application.
[5:42] <peerce> web application development is a whole other can of worms.
[5:43] <DulceEt> I imagine
[5:43] * xamindar (~quassel@71-15-99-150.dhcp.ftwo.tx.charter.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[5:44] <DulceEt> hehehahhaheh
[5:44] <peerce> DulceEt; is this app just for your own use, or do you expect external users to access it too ?
[5:45] <DulceEt> my own use
[5:45] <peerce> Base would do fine for personal use, no web involved.
[5:45] <peerce> use Base to design your forms, your database table(s), and any reports you need, then use base to run those forms, and enter data, query, etc, whatever operations you need to do.
[5:46] <DulceEt> Got it
[5:47] * pppingme (~pppingme@unaffiliated/pppingme) has joined #raspberrypi
[5:47] <DulceEt> I can install apache php etc in localhost and "integrate" the db with the server too, right?
[5:48] <peerce> you're a php programmer with sql database experience ?
[5:48] <DulceEt> I read something about it somewhere, but it was mysql
[5:49] <DulceEt> nah, I'm a law student...
[5:49] <peerce> well, php is a programming language. it does nothing useful til you program it.
[5:50] <DulceEt> BUT I do have nice Orly books here.
[5:50] <peerce> you could in fact design this whole thing in php + sql database of choice (mysql, postgresql, etc).
[5:50] <DulceEt> yes
[5:50] <peerce> i figure it takes 2 years of dedicated work to be come reasonably competent at that.
[5:50] <DulceEt> 2 y

[7:30] <gordonDrogon> red9, the pins have a very high input impedance - so "virtually none" and without knowing the exact process in the SoC manufacture, you're unlikely to get an exact answer from anyone other than the chip designer. was
[7:32] <gordonDrogon> and the general rule applies; if you're designing something that relies on a particular value for something like this, you're almost certianly designing it wrong.

[17:37] <gordonDrogon> jim_chat, the Pi supports compost video from the instant you turn it on - even fedora should support it.
[17:39] <gordonDrogon> red9, haha... you're 6 years late on that one. it's been configurable since day 1 - almost 6 years ago now.
[17:39] <gordonDrogon> the bootloader configures it even before the ARM starts.

NVidia is the fastest/smoothest/stablest of all of those, works great with a harmony remote.

[23:04] <rue_mohr> I toldmyself I need a software triggerable 3-10MP camera, so I'm looking at https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shipping-raspberry-pi-camera-5mp-pixels-RASPBERRY-PI-CAMERA/32293433078.html which looks fine, but am stuck trying to find a pi that can work with it, can anyone help?
[23:04] <HrdwrBoB> literally any
[23:05] <rue_mohr> ok next q: does the pi zero have a cmera interface?
[23:05] <rue_mohr> there seem to be up to 2 flex connectors, I presume one is for camera and one for lcd?
[23:06] <rue_mohr> so if a board just has one, I assume they ditched the camera?
[23:06] <HrdwrBoB> https://www.google.com.au/search?q=pi+zero+camera+interface
[23:06] <[Saint]> I don't think anything is actually using the DSI interface.
[23:06] <[Saint]> I would presume if only one were present it would be camera.
[23:07] <rue_mohr> ok, it is a comera connector then
[23:08] <rue_mohr> :) here is a good question then, why is a IP camera so much more than a pi+camera? (its not related to what I'm up to)
[23:08] <rue_mohr> anyone here ever buy a pi from aliexpress?
[23:09] <rue_mohr> hmm pi zero lacks network...

[23:13] <binaryhermit> I thought there was an official lcd that used the dsi connector
[23:14] <binaryhermit> https://smile.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-7-Touchscreen-Display/dp/B0153R2A9I
[23:15] <binaryhermit> "Only two connections from the Pi to the display are necessary; power from GPIO (or USB) connection to the DSI port. The adapter board handles power, signal conversion, and touch input conversion."
[23:15] <HrdwrBoB> rue_mohr: because firmware, testing, packaging, marketing isn't free
[23:16] <gordonDrogon> binaryhermit, yes, that's the offician lcd that uses the DSI connector.
[23:16] <binaryhermit> [Saint] said there isn
[23:16] <binaryhermit> err
[23:17] <binaryhermit> there isn't anything that uses the dsi connector]
[23:17] <gordonDrogon> that display does.
[23:17] <[Saint]> No I didn't.
[23:17] <binaryhermit> and that's oretty much it
[23:17] <[Saint]> I mean, geez man, it's not even far away in the channel logs.
