[16:35] <Fr0stBit> First off, its kinda first time that i give that much importance in my rpi, and i have some questions... I have my rpi for quite some time (years)
[16:36] <Fr0stBit> Back then i remember it having various versions like model A, model B, and after model B+
[16:36] <Fr0stBit> All these are RPi 1?
[16:36] <ali1234> yes
[16:36] <Fr0stBit> I see that now we have RPi 2 and even 3?!
[16:36] <ali1234> yes
[16:36] <Fr0stBit> Also i see that they are model B too, what does this mean?
[16:37] <ali1234> it means theyhave USB and ethernet
[16:37] <Fr0stBit> Ah.. So the "model" is about what hardware inputs is on the PCB and the "version" is what SoC does it has on it?
[16:37] <ali1234> no
[16:38] <ali1234> the "model" and "version" numbers are a complete mess, they make no sense, do not try to assign meaning to them
[16:38] <ali1234> each one is what it is
[16:39] <Fr0stBit> Aha ok. So now for the drivers/systems part. It did have a gpu in the SoC as i remember but up until recently it did not have a hw accelerated driver for it?
[16:39] <ali1234> there is also a revision number to make things even more confusing
[16:40] <Fr0stBit> Until some time ago Broadcom released the closed source vc blob that implements the 'Legacy' OpenGL driver?
[16:40] <ali1234> so you can have a 1B v1.2 or a 2B v1
[16:40] * zoitub (~zoitub@66.129.50.30) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:40] <ali1234> no, broadcom never released that
[16:41] * DMackey (~n2dvm@cpe-67-246-117-51.twcny.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:41] <ali1234> the pi has already had a closed source accelerated driver
[16:41] <ali1234> *always
[16:42] <ali1234> maybe it wasn't released for a whileuntil after the hardware, i dunno
[16:42] * akk (~akkana@75-161-91-17.albq.qwest.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:42] <Fr0stBit> So what's all the fuzz about that 'experimental OpenGL drivers'? Is the term reffering the open-source opengl drivers?
[16:42] <DMackey> Any one know where I can find the Pi-hole image file? Either Pi-hole-DietPi-Fork-2015-08.zip or DietPi.img
[16:42] <DMackey> Not finding it with google :(
[16:43] <Fr0stBit> That seem to be some kind of new release?
[16:43] <ali1234> no, it's refering an open source shim to the closed source driver, as opposed to the closed source shim to the closed source driver that we use now
[16:43] <DMackey> It's an Ad Blocking image for the RPi

[16:43] * zoitub (~zoitub@66.129.50.30) Quit (Client Quit)
[16:44] <ali1234> what happened was that a few years ago, broadcom released the source code for the android shim for a different GPU. because broadcom.
[16:44] <Fr0stBit> ali1234: When you say shim, you refer to some kind of driver client (proxy?) that we use to call the driver
[16:44] <ali1234> yes
[16:44] <Fr0stBit> Aha, now i start to understand
[16:44] <Fr0stBit> So, what difference does this make actually?
[16:45] <ali1234> you can use direct rendering manager and get accelerated X, instead of just an opengl overlay

[16:54] <ali1234> they don't have different GPUs
[16:54] <Fr0stBit> https://elinux.org/RPi_HardwareHistory
[16:54] <Fr0stBit> Here they say that rpi3 has 400mhz gpu and others 250mhz gpu
[16:54] <ali1234> the clock speed is different
[16:55] <ali1234> that's all
[16:55] <ali1234> you can overclock the GPU on the others if you want

[20:38] <en1gmaa> can someone tell me which commands i use to disable the onboard bluetooth and onboard wifi on a pi3? i want to use my own usb bt and wifi dongles
[20:39] <en1gmaa> still want all the software to work that controls bluetooth and wifi just dont want to use its hardware
[20:39] <gordonDrogon> you buy a Pi v2 ...
[20:40] * RayS (~raysl@sdf1.xen.prgmr.com) has left #raspberrypi
[20:43] <en1gmaa> will that pi v2 work with gps over bluetooth? these pi3's can not do SPP (Serial Port Protocol) correctly. i did try and "switch out" the onboard default BT mapped to /dev/serial1 >> ttyAMA0 which is the big uart and was not successful
[20:43] <en1gmaa> so i switched em to /dev
[20:44] <gordonDrogon> the v2 has no Wi-Fi chip (so no bt either) if you want wi-fi and bt then you need to plug in a usb dongle.
[20:45] <en1gmaa> to /dev/serial0 >>> ttyAMA0 a moment ago with "dtoverlay=pi3-miniuart-bt" in the /boot/config.txt and the /dev swap worked but 'bluetoothctl' does not
[20:45] <en1gmaa> hcitool does not either
[20:45] <en1gmaa> ahhh
[20:45] <gordonDrogon> I have never used bt.
[20:46] <en1gmaa> yea basically i want to disable wifi and bt and use my own. should be a couple commands that should take care of this
[20:46] <en1gmaa> i gonna try a command i found to disable bt and see what happens

[22:12] <iEv0lv3__> So, weird that this popped up in YouTube since I was talking about it the other day, but I saw this guy do a side by side speed comparison with banana pi (octocore) and rpi3 (quadcore). What he did was run the compilation of qt5, which maxes out all cores. Bpi took 7 some minutes, rpi took 300... due to 100% cpu use the ram has to rely on the micro sd for swap space, which is very slow. So he did the same thing
[22:12] <iEv0lv3__> on rpi3 with zram installed. Compiled just as fast as the bpi
[22:14] <iEv0lv3__> Zram adds a gig of swap space onto the distro memor
[22:14] <iEv0lv3__> *distro space
[22:15] <iEv0lv3__> So just an fyi for anyone attempting cpu intensive tasks. Check out zram
[22:15] <en1gmaa> i always have to manually do this command 'sudo rfcomm connect /dev/rfcomm1 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' even when i have edited /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.config
