[1:20] <retromode> hello. im trying to set up pi to be a home server, but a few of the images ive used from a quick google search online have seem to be outdated. should i just use raspbian for what i want to accomplish? eventually i think ill want to add streaming via plex, unsure if raspbian is the best OS to use for this

[1:32] <pennTeller> Hi guys, anybody know a good way to have the raspberry pi3 create a hotspot whenever there is no known networks around?
[1:33] <shauno> retromode, personally I think it's easiest to stick to raspbian (or equivalent) if you're going to be building up bits on top of it. pre-canned distros work best if you just want them to do what it says on the can
[1:34] <retromode> shauno: gotchya, ill stick with raspbian then, thanks!
[1:35] <BlackMaria> just my 2 cents, you might think there is no hotspots, but it might just be your antena isnt strong enough. Otherwise just script iwlist to start stop an network whenever an ssid other that the one you create is present

[1:44] <turtlehat> pennTeller, check if your conditions are being met, then start hostapd/dnsmasq
[1:45] <pennTeller> turtlehat, I made a script that tries to ping 8.8.8.8 but doesnt seem to work :(
[1:45] <turtlehat> can you show it?
[1:46] <pennTeller> turtlehat, yes one sec
[1:47] <pennTeller> https://pastebin.com/6tpgN8bm
[1:48] <turtlehat> hostapd and dnsmasq are starting?
[1:48] * extor (extor@unaffiliated/extor) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:49] <pennTeller> turtlehat, good question havent checked that, one sec please
[1:49] <pennTeller> dnsmasq = Active: inactive (dead)
[1:50] <pennTeller> hostapd = Active: inactive (dead)
[1:50] <pennTeller> no idea why this is happening
[1:50] * easzero (~quassel@2a02:908:4c4:f300:b4db:2481:3294:fc04) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:50] <turtlehat> didnt you forget the name of the interpreter in the beginning?
[1:51] <turtlehat> #!/bin/sh or similar?
[1:51] <turtlehat> lets start from the beginning: how is your script failing?
[1:53] <pennTeller> I did forget to put that but this is in the rc.local scfipt
[1:53] <pennTeller> script*
[1:53] <pennTeller> if I run it as bash /etc/rc.local everything works
[1:53] <turtlehat> oh, are you sure network is up when its being run?
[1:53] <pennTeller> I am purposefuly disconnecting ethernet do that the access point is created
[1:54] <turtlehat> i dont know about rc.local, but if you do that too early on boot it will fail
[1:54] <turtlehat> i would probably make a service for systemd that waits for network
[1:55] <turtlehat> it might even have an internet.target
[1:55] <pennTeller> I dont know what "it might even have an internet.target" means :s
[1:55] <pennTeller> I then went to sudo crontab -e and did @reboot bash /etc/rc.local <-- it didnt work either
[1:56] <turtlehat> if you make a systemd service, you can make the script run only after certain parts of the system has been initialized
[1:56] * extor (extor@unaffiliated/extor) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:56] <turtlehat> maybe you should make an external script and then log that script to some file
[1:57] <turtlehat> it would be really helpful to see the output
[1:57] <pennTeller> "log" that script?
[1:57] <pennTeller> like save logs to check for errosr?
[1:57] <turtlehat> /some/dir/script.sh > /some/log.file
[1:57] <turtlehat> to see exactly where it fails
[1:57] <turtlehat> or if it even runs
[1:58] <pennTeller> turtlehat,
[1:58] <pennTeller> turtlehat, yeah I guess Ill do that thank you
[1:58] * NoCode (~NoCode@unaffiliated/nocode) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:58] <turtlehat> but i will say, that in my experience, after starting hostapd, you want to wait a bit before starting dnsmasq
[1:59] <turtlehat> this is a gut feeling, so dont quote me :)
[1:59] <turtlehat> but again, with systemd, you can make dnsmasq waitfor/require hostapd, and delay its start after that
[2:00] <turtlehat> but since you say hostapd isnt running, maybe ping fails for network reasons
[2:01] <turtlehat> could be a bunch of things ;)
[2:01] <pennTeller> I jsut tested it again in a monitor without network connection
[2:01] <pennTeller> just runing sudo bash /etc/rc.local worked falwlesly
[2:01] <pennTeller> its probbably not running
[2:01] <turtlehat> then mayube rc.local isnt being executed
[2:02] <pennTeller> can you point me to any resource on how to make a systemd service?
[2:02] <turtlehat> are you usign jessie?
[2:02] <turtlehat> then look in /lib/systemd/system in some of the files with the .service extension
[2:03] <pennTeller> turtlehat, Im using raspbian stretch
[2:03] <turtlehat> hmm
[2:04] <turtlehat> suppose you look there too
[2:04] <turtlehat> or here https://www.devdungeon.com/content/creating-systemd-service-files
[2:04] <turtlehat> its not that difficult though
[2:04] <turtlehat> and i can show you the one i use to start hostapd and dnsmasq
[2:06] * pavlushka (~pavlushka@ubuntu/member/pavlushka) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)

[2:09] * hubutm20 (~hubutm20@109.166.136.165) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[2:11] <turtlehat> pennTeller, i wrote what (i think) you need here https://pastebin.com/UPNr90g6
[2:12] <turtlehat> if you want dnsmasq to wait for hostapd and delay you can add the lines
[2:12] <pennTeller> turtlehat, thank you very much man
[2:13] <turtlehat> Requires=network.target hostapd.target
[2:13] <turtlehat> in the [Unit] section
[2:13] <pennTeller> turtlehat, what does that do?
[2:13] <turtlehat> if hostapd isnt running, dnsmasq isnt going to start
[2:14] * tunekey (~tunekey@unaffiliated/tunekey) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:14] <turtlehat> but if you say it works when you execute rc.local then you dont have to edit dnsmasq.service
[2:15] <turtlehat> just to instate your own to make it run
[2:15] <turtlehat> insert*
[2:15] <pennTeller> turtlehat, thanks :) I will familiarize myself with services more
[2:17] <turtlehat> gl

[2:53] <retromode> so ive set up my rpi3 with plex and samba to share files across my home network and then stream them through the pi. if i want a way to automatically curate movies/shows, would it be better to just use radarr/sonarr and point them to my shared folder, or set up those programs on the pi itself?
[2:54] <retromode> or, is there a different program someone would recommend?

[3:08] <akk> extor: It's just Linux, and you can certainly run Linux on x86.
[3:08] <akk> extor: You don't need to run a big slow bloated desktop on linux, there are lots of lightweight options.
[3:09] <akk> (Personally I favor openbox but there are lots of good choices.)
[3:10] <extor> akk, is there any linux as lean as netBSD?
[3:10] <akk> I haven't actually used netBSD. I know some of the *BSDs have kernels that are more efficient than Linux's
[3:11] <akk> though the kernel is a small part of the speed you perceive in a desktop/laptop machine.
[3:13] <extor> Is there any distro of linux that uses as little ram as netBSD does?
[3:14] <extor> I was told that netBSD ran on less ram than any of the other bsds including openBSD
[3:14] <extor> It's disturbing; I was just about to install openBSD

[3:18] <akk> Again, I'm not sure the kernel is a big contributor to how much RAM the system uses
[3:18] <akk> at least if you ever want to use huge software like a browser.
[3:19] <akk> But you can certainly run a BSD kernel if you prefer that.

[19:57] <AHemlocksLie> I've got myself in a pickle and am having to remotely setup a Pi. I can remote into a local PC, but not into the Pi itself once I put the SD card in. I've seen that I can add an ssh file to enable it, but I can't see any partitions from Windows. Is there any tools I can use for this?
[19:59] <BurtyB> AHemlocksLie, if you're using raspbian you should see config.txt, cmdline.txt etc. on the SD and that's where you put the "ssh" file
[19:59] <AHemlocksLie> I'm trying to set it up from Windows, but I am installing Raspbian
[20:00] <AHemlocksLie> I flashed the image with Etcher, but I can't see anything on the SD card now
[20:00] <BurtyB> tried an unplug/replug?
[20:00] <AHemlocksLie> I still see the drive, but it's sort of faded, and when I click it, it says to insert media. It's an SD card reader
[20:01] <AHemlocksLie> Trying to get someone local to do that
[20:01] <AHemlocksLie> aha

[22:19] <bobstro> beanbag-: The RPi Foundation does a pretty good job with backwards compatibility, so even if the Zero is superceded, you still likely have several years of support.

[22:19] <guy_> hm, did anyone ever try emulating rpi in qemu and make it multicore?
[22:19] <bobstro> My RPi B from 2012 still works with the latest raspbian.
[22:20] <pwillard> Pi Zero W seems to be the thing... Maybe they will make it until they "replace" it... like the other boards. IE; you can't really get a Pi2... but why would you if you can get a 3
[22:20] <pwillard> ?
[22:20] <en1gma> what is a good gps module to get for a pi3 that is really accurate. i think use gnss?
[22:20] <squirrel> my rpi b works well too, except its lan card was fried during a storm

[22:28] <bobstro> lo
[22:28] <Encrypt> Has anyone tried both?
[22:29] <Encrypt> I don't know which one to choose :/
[22:29] <Encrypt> According to what I've read, Seafile is lighter than Nextcloud
[22:30] <Encrypt> But Seafile doesn't store the files "directly" on the hard drive, it uses git so it stores blocks instead of files
[22:31] <Encrypt> It would be nice to use unison instead of the sync client provided by the software, that's why I am wondering which one to choose
[22:31] <bobstro> Do you want a general-purpose NAS, or specifically sync?

[22:37] <beanbag-> just pasted by mistake here since it won't run on pi
[22:37] <bobstro> no worries
[22:37] <beanbag-> wish it did :/
[22:38] <bobstro> what, you don't like minicom?
[22:38] <beanbag-> minicom is CANUCKED
[22:38] <bobstro> it's a bit ... quirky.
[22:38] <beanbag-> it's ok for modems or if your serial link is 100% standard
[22:38] <bobstro> lately, i've been able to do what i need to do with screen, fortunately
[22:38] <beanbag-> but I have had it show a blank screen when rhe baud was just off
[22:38] <beanbag-> so you think there's no physical wiring
