[4:37] <tezogmix> anyone running ubuntu-mate on the pi 2/3?
[4:38] * whatever_hi (~whatever_@63.157.105.241) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[4:39] <tezogmix> it doesn't seem so bad from comparing to raspbian but there's certainly things not streamlined or updated it appears for the pi though on their official mate page (and official pi page as an alternate os), it's advertised for the pi
[4:40] <tezogmix> one thing off the bat that doesn't work from doing the software update on the pi, was firefox quantum does not work
[4:41] <tezogmix> appears that from version 55.x-57+ it's been like that, firefox esr works... and youtube playback on it is actually decent compared to raspbian firefox esr
[4:41] * sir_galahad_ad_ (~aaron@cpe-76-179-65-199.maine.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: night kids)
[4:42] <tezogmix> also during the initial flash of the ubuntu mate image and 1st boot, once you go update the main software-security components of mate... you'll be told you have no disk space (64mb) in the /boot directory.... you have to repartition the boot folder in another linux distro with gparted
[4:43] <tezogmix> and resize it to something like 1gb and replace the 20mb contents that were originally in the boot folder
[4:44] * ManTK (~mantk@unaffiliated/mantk) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[4:46] <tezogmix> this was the reference page: https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/ and this was the workaround for the /boot size full-gparted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYAnmjT8P-E + you'll need firefox-esr unless someone here figured out how to get quantum working on ubuntu-mate-16.04.2
[4:46] * ManTK (~mantk@unaffiliated/mantk) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> WHOA
[4:47] <tezogmix> temps seem to be the similar as was for raspbian...
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> stop right there
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> Raspberry Pi Bluetooth Radio Chip also contains an FM receiver?!
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> So I can listen to radio on my RPi?
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> my god we are in the future
[4:47] <BenderRodriguez> is this true though?
[4:48] <BenderRodriguez> has anyone tried it?
[4:48] <tezogmix> haven't even tried/checked it out BenderRodriguez :P
[4:49] <tezogmix> i wonder if that could be accessed through the OS as opposed to visiting a radio-FM www
[4:49] <Ben64> raspberry pi is a fm transmitter

[8:07] <oq> pi has a 100mbit nic, when 99% of home networks are gigabit on the lan, has 1 nic which means you have to rely on vlans (which are pretty complicated and require managed switches) to funnel both your lan and your wan down the same nic or add a usb nic.. which adds latency
[8:07] <baldengineer> pennTeller I doubt anyone needed to, so a better question is why do you think such an example exists?
[8:08] <oq> openwrt is good software but there are much better cheap hardware options than a pi

[14:48] <Hanno_Banwer> Hey Guys, I am trying to set up the raspberry yippee I got for Christmas. I bought the MPEG-2 license key and edited the config.txt in /boot/ but when I run „vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2“ it’s always disabled.
[14:49] <Hanno_Banwer> I have a RasPi 3
[14:49] <kerio> silly question: did you reboot?
[14:49] <Hanno_Banwer> yes I already did a reboot

[14:50] <Hanno_Banwer> I put "decode_MPG2=0x7....." at the end of the config.txt
[14:51] <kerio> are you sure you didn't mispaste your serial code or whatever
[14:51] <Hanno_Banwer> I already checked if I copied the wrong serial number but it is the same as on the recipe
[14:54] <kerio> well i'm out of ideas :(
[14:54] <kerio> are you on the latest raspbian image?

[14:56] <rpdom> vcgencmd get_mem gpu
[14:56] <Hanno_Banwer> @rpdom ah that might be it let me check

[18:21] <blackswan> my google-fu has been unable to locate something suitable thus far
[18:23] <rpdom> Basically you'll need to pull in the kernel source which is held on github (although I think there may be a package for it) and build from that. There are some notes, but not a walkthrough https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/kernel/README.md

[18:34] <hubot> Encrypt, how can I setup ssh unlocking?
[18:39] <rpdom> blackswan: The kernel is now in the raspberrypi-kernel package, not the bootloader one. You can get the config file used to build it by "sudo modprobe configs" and then it will be available in the gzipped /proc/config.gz

[20:22] <rpdom> Serial port/UART connection?
[20:23] <DrJ> ah, yea I never use a monitor with my rpis
[20:23] <DrJ> all headless
[20:23] <xtore> I would need n RS-232 cable for the serial uart?
[20:23] <xtore> DrJ, all headless, really? But you have ethernet I bet and not wifi.
[20:23] <rpdom> RS232 at 3.3v
[20:24] <rpdom> 5V or 12v ones would kill the Pi
[20:24] <DrJ> they are wired, but of course they have wifi built in since they are rpi 3's
[20:26] <xtore> What about the second USB port on the zero
[20:26] <xtore> Can I use that as a console
[20:26] <xtore> One for the power and the second one for uhmm...

[20:28] <uriah> you can just plug some things in too, but only low power stuff
[20:28] <uriah> like keyboard
[20:29] <rpdom> Why just low power?

[20:30] <xtore> Does the zero log stuff to disk as a matter of routine? Like anything at all?
[20:30] <uriah> rpdom: on the zero? I’m pretty sure there’s a low enough current limit available for USB devices
[20:30] <rpdom> The power on the USB data connector is directly connected to the USB power connector. With a decent PSU you could take maybe 2 Amps
[20:30] <rpdom> On the Zero, that is.
[20:30] <uriah> good to know then
[20:30] <uriah> :>
[20:31] <uriah> ty for info
[20:31] <rpdom> There's no limiting circuit at all.
[20:31] <uriah> on earlier models it was the case
[20:31] <uriah> like a/b
[20:31] <rpdom> ztore: Just the usual log files in /var/log. Nothing special
