[0:40] <en1gma> i think i have a 5v 2A psu for pi3. im using BT, internal wifi, external wifi adapter (usb) and an rtlsdr (usb) so far but i do have 2 more rtlsdr to fill up remaining usb ports

[2:12] <AntiComposite> Composite.
[2:12] <AntiComposite> Nothing to do with my name, that's something completely different.
[2:15] <IanTLopp> AntiComposite, I can do vga through gert's vga666, or through an hdmi to vga adapter and changing a few things in a raspi config file. I was wondering if vga666 or the hdmi to vga was better than the other, OR if there was a better option overall, like something else through gpio...
[2:17] <IanTLopp> I think I prefer the vga666, as far as size is concerned (redesigning the pcb so I can make it MUCH smaller, then use a ribbon cable to the controller board for my lcd panel, whereas the hdmi to vga option is bigger, and I don't want to dismantle and desolder/resolder the hdmi port)
[2:22] <AntiComposite> Seems like you've already made your decision :)
[2:23] <IanTLopp> AntiComposite, maybe... if I have to do the hdmi to vga (because speed, or something), I'll deal with the soldering issues, but is gpio better than or worse than hdmi to vga?

[2:44] <ali1234> IanTLopp: the answer is "it depends"
[2:45] <ali1234> some constants though: vga666 is only 6 bits per pixel, so the picture is objectively worse
[2:45] <ali1234> you can however get 8 bit vga the same way, but then you need to build your own
[2:46] <ali1234> doing this will leave you with only a couple of GPIO for other use, which may or may not be a problem
[2:46] <IanTLopp> ali1234, 8bit is pointless on standard lcd panels though, since 6bpp gives you 18bit video, which is somewhere around 200,000 simultaneous colors, and most standard lcd panels are about that as well, or... um... am I mistaken?
[2:46] <ali1234> again, it depends on the panel
[2:47] <ali1234> any real monitor solution will be at least 8 bpp
[2:47] <ali1234> however if you are connecting directly to a DPI display, then it is different
[2:47] <IanTLopp> *shouldn't* be a problem, I think. should I choose to bump up to 24bit color... but afaik, the panels generally are "16million colors" as opposed to 16.7million. if it says 16.7 then it's a true 24bit panel, and I've not found one yet... so the 16 million color panels are actually 18 bit panels, and get the rest of the colors through dithering.
[2:47] <ali1234> you might well have a 6bpp panel, or even 565
[2:47] <ali1234> and in that case, you would not want to use VGA, as you would be converting to analog just to convert back to digital
[2:48] <ali1234> a direct HDMI solution, or using the GPIO DPI directly, would be better
[2:48] <IanTLopp> ali1234, my problem is that the inputs on the panel are limited to analog inputs, with, I think, vga being the best option.
[2:49] <IanTLopp> I'll have to look up the panel again, though I'm away from it right now, I'm just trying to get things in line to start working on it again in a couple weeks when I get home.
[2:49] <ali1234> VGA or composite are the only analog options, really... i don't know what else you could have
[2:49] <ali1234> by far the best solution is the DSI port, unfortunately it only works with the official 7" display
[2:50] <red9> Some displays have pcb pads for a DVI connector if you open them up.

[3:03] <genBTC> whats wrong with it as is
[3:04] <red9> crap signal reception.
[3:04] <red9> The oscilloscope sees the signal. The LPT port misses it.
[3:05] <red9> A 74HC04 solved a lot. But I thought maybe a capacitor at the PC could condition the signal a bit more.
[3:05] <ali1234> no
[3:05] <genBTC> not at all.
[3:06] <ali1234> a capacitor is the exact opposite of what you want
[3:06] <genBTC> what are you using software wise to read the data

[3:09] <ali1234> how long is the cable?
[3:09] <genBTC> i found this online:
[3:09] <genBTC> Three 74AHCT541 octal buffers/drivers with 3-state outputs chips convert to/from the Pi's 3V3 line level and the parallel port's 5V.
[3:09] <genBTC> So it needs to be level shifted from 5v to 3.3v is all ?
[3:09] <genBTC> or vice versa ?
[3:10] * noodle (~noodle@ec2-35-164-10-86.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:10] <red9> maybe 4 meters long
[3:10] <red9> genBTC, the output is 5V TTL..
[3:10] <genBTC> if you say so
[3:10] <red9> (no RPi)
[3:11] <ali1234> what are you trying to do?
[3:12] <red9> Make code for a digital sensor using a PC. When it works it will sit on a RPi
[3:12] <genBTC> I would use this software: https://github.com/garlick/pi-parport
[3:12] <red9> The sensor accepts 3-5 V ..
[3:12] <red9> (for power)
[3:12] <ali1234> why do you need a 4M cable?
[3:12] * TReK (~UnFaQ@unaffiliated/trek) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[3:14] <red9> As for capacitance. Often quick digital signals gets ringing. And a snubber adjusted to introduce capacitance that is enough to smooth out ringing but not within reach to smooth out the wanted signal can sometimes improve the situation.
[3:14] <red9> ali1234, It will be used for other stuff. Don't want to chop it up.
[3:15] <genBTC> https://github.com/garlick/pi-parport/raw/master/hardware_v1/schematic.pdf
[3:16] <ali1234> a buffer at the sensor end of the cable should be enough
[3:16] <ali1234> how are you powering the sensor?
[3:17] * TReK (~UnFaQ@unaffiliated/trek) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:17] <red9> local power supply.
[3:17] <red9> Lab bench type.
[3:17] <genBTC> red9: you should be able to measure the difference in signal integrity between short cable A and long nonworking cable B if you said you had an oscilloscope,.
[3:17] <red9> It's all just a temporary setup until it gets moved to a RPi..
[3:17] <ali1234> i can't see any reason why that wouldn't work
[3:17] <ali1234> 4M is not that long
[3:18] <red9> 4 meter is just an eye observation. Maybe it's 6..
[3:19] * fuzzyrainbowz (~fuzzyrain@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/fuzzyrainbowz) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[3:19] <genBTC> old ass parallel cables worked well beyond that.
[3:19] <ali1234> i have a 10M one somewhere i think
[3:20] <red9> ops, seems it's ~7.3 meters..
[3:20] <ali1234> why even bother with this?
[3:20] <ali1234> why not just develop it on the pi?
[3:20] <genBTC> lol
[3:20] <genBTC> give up now
[3:20] <ali1234> it seems like more trouble than it is worth, dealing with parallel ports
[3:21] <genBTC> theres a reason they moved to serial
[3:21] <ali1234> and then USB
[3:23] <genBTC> also, the amount of code required for this is non-trivial. so my next guess is that theres a bug in your C code
[3:23] <ali1234> i would agree with that assessment given how annoying it is to access a parallel port
[3:25] <genBTC> A PC parallel port style interface is cobbled together from GPIO pins: 8-bit data out, 5-bit status in, 4 bit control out . No interrupts or dma; SPP mode only.
[3:26] <genBTC> the status and control lines matter. its not just 8 data lines
[3:27] <ali1234> not when you use it for bit banging a 1 -wire sensor
[3:27] <ali1234> although you do need EPP for that
[3:27] <ali1234> are you sure you've turned it on in the bios?

[19:09] <semitones_tea> yeah we'll see. I think i had pihole and znc set up on there so i'm gonna see what i can recover.....

[19:15] <akk> and Pis are prone to being shut down ungracefully.
[19:16] <semitones_tea> that is an excellent point. I will keep track this time. Really regretting not making a backup when I was all done setting it up last time :P
[19:17] <semitones_tea> it's true that using rpi's are like learning computers again for the first time: you gotta save and backup often :P
[19:17] <akk> I used to back up the whole filesystem, but last time I tried to restore one of those it was a disaster
[19:17] <akk> and I ended up giving up and flashing a new raspbian on top of the attempted backup restore
[19:17] <akk> so now I think I'll just go with the list of needed updates.
[19:20] <semitones_tea> hmm yeah interesting. in general why didn't that work? just restorign

[20:19] <AHemlocksLie> I'm having an odd problem with SSH on my Pi. It was working, but now when I try to connect, PuTTY just keeps trying for ages. It doesn't error or loop, it's the same attempt, and nothing shows up in the SSH window
[20:21] <AHemlocksLie> I had an active connection, and everything was fine, and I was trying to patch up my transmission since I recently had to wipe the machine and start over. I had about 200 torrents I was seeding off an external drive, so I dropped them in the watch directory, and transmission was picking them up, and things just sorta... stopped. Didn't disconnect exactly, but nothing was happening, either
[20:21] <AHemlocksLie> I thought it might have been resource consumption trying to verify all the torrents, but it's been like this for a good 30-45 minutes now
