[0:25] <xs2> it's been idling for a while, I got it like 3 months ago or so. Now I finally set it up as a remote file server thingy, I plugged external hdd into it and I ssh remotely when I need to get a file or something. I installed remmina (like remote control gui) as well.

[0:37] <Ben64> you said you installed remmina
[0:37] <Ben64> but you should be using ssh instead of that
[0:38] * nickdastain (~nickdasta@2a00:d880:6:262::45a3) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)

[0:41] <xs2> s/at/at it/

[0:41] <Ben64> vnc is slow and the pi is slow, and running x is slow
[0:42] <xs2> it is indeed
[0:42] <Ben64> so ... why
[0:42] <AntiComposite> x2go isn't bad, if you've got a compatible DE

[2:40] <Smashcat> Just better than the standard USB dongles. I can't get any decent recording even with high quality RODE mics. It's just horrible static
[2:40] <Smashcat> (can just about hear my voice if I yell, but it's mostly static)
[2:40] <Smashcat> The mics work fine on Windows out of the box.
[2:40] <AntiComposite> What mic?
[2:41] * shantorn (~W7SAK-Sha@184.63.204.73) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:41] <Smashcat> RODE NTG3 http://www.rode.com/microphones/ntg-3
[2:41] <mk-fg> Smashcat, If you have 5V portable charger, try powering rpi from that when recording
[2:41] * DFrostedWang (~DFrostedW@unaffiliated/dfrostedwang) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[2:41] <Smashcat> I do - I have a 3A5V supply
[2:41] <mk-fg> Should be no static with these, pretty sure
[2:42] <mk-fg> s/these/that/
[2:42] <Smashcat> On windows they're awesome. On the Pi, it's just static. Going through a cheapo USB dongle from PiHut
[2:42] * ManTK (web107@unaffiliated/mantk) Quit (Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in)
[2:42] <AntiComposite> How does it sound on the Windows box through the dongle?
[2:42] <Smashcat> Thinking that's the problem. It's a crap C-Media thing.
[2:43] <Smashcat> Haven't tried the dongle. Will do now...
[2:43] * ManTK (web107@unaffiliated/mantk) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:43] <mk-fg> I've had that static thing with output, and using battery PSU seem to remove static completely, both with built-in output and cheap usb audio card
[2:43] * djk (~Thunderbi@pool-96-242-33-206.nwrknj.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[2:43] * djk1 is now known as djk
[2:43] <AntiComposite> Ground loops can cause issues, but I'd point at a bad interface first
[2:45] <Smashcat> Yeah, it sounds awful on Windows through the dongle...
[2:46] <AntiComposite> Don't know how you mess up a USB sound card like that, but I guess they did.
[2:47] <Smashcat> Yeah, think I'll need to go with a mini windows PC instead of the Pi for the project.
[2:47] <AntiComposite> You could get a relible USB sound card/interface somewhere else, but if you've got the hardware with the inputs already...
[2:49] <Smashcat> I don't yet - I've been testing on my work PC here. Can get a little win PC pretty cheap though - I can't have this sounding aweful :)

[6:25] <iEv0lv3__> I have a case that came with heatsinks and a small 5v fan thay plugs directly into gpio (I'm sure we all know what I'm talking about here lol)... But have recently read, that since the rpi3 itself runs on 5v, a 5v running fan will burn up something? Corrupt ad? Idk... But there are instructions to make a small module thay brings current down to 3.3v to be safe..................................question is: can
[6:25] <iEv0lv3__> that gpio just be turned down programtically so I don't have to buy pieces

[12:56] <mfa298> extor: raspbian should also expand on first boot, however as was already said there should be an option in raspi-config for that
[12:56] <extor> Not sure how long that expansion takes; is it instantaneous? Because
[12:56] <extor> I shut down the pi after a couple of minutes
[12:57] <ali1234> it takes about 15 seconds
[12:57] <extor> yeah well it was not automatic in my stretch nov 29th image
[12:57] <mfa298> it should be pretty fast, but I'd give it a few minutes - it boots, updates the partition table, reboots, does the filesystem resize
[12:57] <extor> So even in a headless install it will expand. Hmmmm...
[12:58] <extor> oh well thats not 15 seconds
[12:58] <mfa298> it could be you stopped the pi in the middle of the filesystem resize

[13:10] <extor> maybe 10+ years old perhaps
[13:10] <mfa298> if it's a USB 1 socket then that's probably of the era of the early pentiums, although usb1 hub into a usb2 port might be slightly more possible
[13:10] <extor> yeah the lsusb does say something about usb 1.1
[13:11] <extor> There's one Linux Foundation 2.0 hub and one Linux Foundation 1.1 hub
[13:11] <extor> root hub, it says

[13:15] <rpdom> Although some mice and keyboards are USB1.1, as that's all they need. Cheapo USB2 hubs will work at the slowest speed of devices connected to them. Look for the bDeviceProtocol value in lsusb -v. If it says Single TT then every port will work at the lowest speed. If it says TT per port then each port will run at full speed.

[18:42] <retromode> hello. i have a pi with plex/samba set up on a shared folder that where i have a seagate external hard drive mounted. i currently cant write to this hard drive, ive tried changing the ownership of the shared folder using chown and chmod to give my default user read/write permissions on the shared folder, however im still unable to for example create a directory on the external drive. anyone have any suggestions for what else i
[18:43] <retromode> /etc/ftab file but im not sure if this is necessary if ive manually changed permissions already

[18:50] <retromode> so i should unmount it and remount with the default user
[18:50] <retromode> user?*
[18:50] <retromode> also, do i need to reboot the pi whenever i make a change to the fstab file in order to see my changes take effect?
[18:55] <aib> retromode: try umount -a (or umount /dev/or/mount/point) and then mount -a for all the 'auto' entries
[18:55] <aib> retromode: what is the filesystem?
[18:55] <retromode> ntfs
[18:56] <retromode> says the target is busy, should i kill the external hard drive process?
[18:56] <retromode> dont want to corrupt anything haha
[18:57] <aib> close any programs that might have a file open and CD away from any directories
[18:57] <aib> lsof(8) might help
[18:58] <aib> retromode: search for "ntfs" in the man page for mount(8). you are looking for the uid/gid/umask options.
[19:01] <retromode> hmm even after cding away and closing the shared folder on my desktop it still says the target is busy
[19:01] <aib> try lsof
[19:01] <aib> or a reboot, really :)
[19:01] <retromode> yeah ill try rebooting
[19:02] <aib> lsof -n | grep /your/mount/point
[19:02] <aib> will give you a list of files open under /your/mount/point along with other info such as the process name
[19:03] <retromode> yep i grepped the mount point, didnt see anything open, but i also didnt use the -n option
[19:03] <retromode> rebooting now
[19:03] <aib> hmm, apparently lsof has a dedicated directory option, checking that out
[19:03] <aib> -n is just "don't resolve hostnames etc.", to speed things up
[19:04] <retromode> ah ok
[19:06] <retromode> aib: ok on reboot, i cant cd into my seagate drive anymore (which is mounted at a folder '/share'). here is the line i have in my fstab file: 'UUID=18D2946CD294503C /share ntfs defaults,user,uid=1000,guid=1000,umask=777,users,rw 0 0' see anything there that could be preventing me from getting into the drive?

[21:53] <Encrypt> I have a problem to solve :P
[21:54] <Encrypt> In our bathroom at home, we have a heater and a window
[21:54] <zleap> Encrypt: hi, we can try and help, just ask
[21:54] <Encrypt> From time to time, we forget to power off the heater when we open the window
[21:55] <Encrypt> Is there a "standalone" solution to power off the heater once the window is opened or should I use domotics to get the state of the window and power off the heater (using a Pi and the ZWave protocol)?
[21:56] <Habbie> i'm sure it could be done with basic electronics
[21:56] <Habbie> without software
[21:56] <Encrypt> Yeah
[21:56] <Encrypt> Like a microcontroller & a relay, communicating over RF
[21:56] <zleap> well state of the window could be a simple switch
[21:56] <Encrypt> Bit I'm not sure I'd be able to do so
[21:56] <Encrypt> But*
[21:56] <Encrypt> zleap, Yep
[21:57] <zleap> i am not sure how you measure the state of the heater though
[21:57] <zleap> unless you some how tap in to the switch, which if mains may be a bad idea, plus bathrooms don't generally have plug sockets in
[21:58] <zleap> they do for shaver sockets inthe UK but that is a not a mains socket usually it a 110v 2 pin socket
[21:58] <Habbie> Encrypt, well i meant without a microcontroller even, but either way, sure
[21:58] <zleap> so i assume the heater heats the room up or does it heat the water up for a shower
[21:59] <Encrypt> Habbie, I could also connect like a switch near the window, which would connect or disconnect the heater
[21:59] <Encrypt> But that's not that neat
[21:59] <Habbie> ack
[22:00] <fuzzems> Could you do two temperature sensors? One near the heat source and one further away. Compare the values to determine if the heater is on.
[22:00] <zleap> you don't really want wires in a bathroom, as if there is moisture, it is not a good idea
