[2:00] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[2:00] <as2333> init is a kernel boot parameter?
[2:01] <shauno> odd, that works here
[2:02] <as2333> shauno, init = bash works for you? I'm trying it on a rpi with stretch
[2:02] <as2333> rpi3
[2:03] <shauno> this is a 3 too. gotta find a card reader to put it back to normal now, but iirc it's "last few weeks" uptodate
[2:04] <as2333> hm - mine is a couple of months of old I think
[2:05] <shauno> shouldn't make a huge difference, I used init like that in the 90s too. main thing I think I'd check for is to make sure you have console=tty1 in cmdline too
[2:06] <shauno> also try banging the enter key a few times. sounds silly, but if you're booting verbosely, the prompt might have been lost in the noise (it printed it, you just never saw it go past)
[2:06] <as2333> Im using the serial port so I have console=serial0
[2:08] <as2333> Im nore or less sure booting hangs when trying to initialize the ethernet system - led stops blinking
[2:09] <as2333> anyway Ill experiment some more - thanks for the feedback!
[2:09] <shauno> hm, that's odd. mine has console=serial0,115200 ... but I don't have a /dev/serial0 (but I do have a /dev/serial1)
[2:09] <shauno> but anyway. I'll amend my statement to "it works for me with hdmi + keyboard" :)
[2:12] <shauno> (and now that I've had a chance to check, that is raspbian jessie, that was last updated sometime this year)
[2:13] <as2333> jessie doesn't use systemd does it
[2:15] <shauno> it does

[3:01] <egnun> Is there a way to enable SSH in the raspbian image file *before* the installation?
[3:01] <ozzzy_> isn't it enabled by default?
[3:02] <egnun> Is it?
[3:02] <ozzzy_> pretty sure
[3:02] <egnun> Can I just plug my Pi in and then SSH onto it?
[3:02] <ozzzy_> if you know the IP
[3:03] <shauno> for raspbian, you need to create a file named 'ssh' on the first partition
[3:03] <egnun> Where?
[3:04] <egnun> The first partition would be boot.
[3:04] <egnun> Does it need to contain something?
[3:05] <shauno> it doesn't need to contain anything, and yes, /boot
[3:05] <egnun> That's all?
[3:05] <shauno> but because that's the fat partition, you can create the file from anywhere
[3:05] <shauno> yeah. it jsut needs to exist, that's all it tests for
[3:06] <egnun> Ok. I'll try that.
[3:06] <shauno> it used to be enabled by default, until someone had to admit that having a default username, default password, and having ssh open, was asking for trouble

[3:13] <egnun> Hmm, I can't find my pi.
[3:14] <egnun> Oh, btw: Does the jessie image still work on armel hardware?
[3:14] <egnun> (Raspberry 1 B)
[3:14] <shauno> it should. as long as you see both kernel.img and kernel7.img in /boot, you've probably got an image designed to work anywhere
[3:14] <shauno> (kernel.img for armv6, kernel7 for armv7)
[3:15] <egnun> Ah, ok.
[3:15] <egnun> But I still can't see a pi in my network

[3:22] <shauno> that's usually a different issue. it should appear on dhcp & avahi regardless of whether ssh is up
[3:23] <shauno> if you can pop the card in another computer, I'd check to see if 'ssh' disappeared from /boot (it should. if it didn't, boot isn't finishing)
[3:23] <shauno> and whether cmdline.txt still has a reference to init_resize.sh (this should run on first boot, and then be removed from cmdline.txt. so if it's still there, it's never booted)
[3:24] <shauno> .. that's about all I've got for troubleshooting a headless boot. not being able to see what's happening doesn't make it fun.
[3:24] <egnun> the ssh file is still there
[3:25] <egnun> And the cmdline.txt still has that reference.
[3:26] <shauno> so it's never finished booting. without a monitor it's difficult to guess why, but you can probably put off worrying about the network for now

[3:28] <egnun> I'm just going to quickly rewrite the image. (I tried some stuff with qemu. Maybe it broke something. But that's another story…)
[3:29] <shauno> if you have a spare card, that's worth trying too
[3:29] <egnun> Unfortunately not.

[3:51] <shauno> the newest should work on the pi1, last I heard
[3:51] <shauno> it helps that the little pi zero use the same cpu, so support for it is more important than you'd think
[3:53] <shauno> (but if I read that backwards; I'm not sure what support there is for older releases, whether they still get updates, etc)
[3:57] <egnun> Ok.

[15:22] <r3> interestingly, looking through that documentation, nowhere does it say to mark a partition active or bootable. I wonder if that's an oversight. The last few MicroSD cards I've bought have come with a partition, but I don't recall now if they are marked as active/bootable - I will have to look next time I have one handy.
[15:22] <Rickta59> wouldn't the dd copy all the info including the boot flag settings?
[15:23] <r3> you don't use dd for a NOOBS setup, it's just a file copy
[15:23] <Rickta59> ah .. never tried it

[18:47] <gordonDrogon> it's for everything.

[21:54] <gordonDrogon> Nauti, ok. not a symbol I've seen used before. oh well. what power/voltage are the motors?
[21:55] <gordonDrogon> Nauti, then again, with a 20 amp fuse, I think the answer is "big" :)
[21:55] <ali1234> maybe not, if there is a misunderstanding about how fuses work
[21:56] <gordonDrogon> Nauti, I've used the logic-level mosfets in the past.
[21:56] <ali1234> 3A peak stall current is not that high for DC motors
[21:56] <ali1234> x6 is 18A
[21:56] <raynold> ahh it's a wonderful day
[21:57] <ali1234> but you probably don't need a 20A fuse for a set up like that. you need a slow blow fuse
[21:57] <Nauti> gordonDrogon: they're just for example. I'll be running smaller 12 V loads, I'd say I'll never go above 10 A and they're rated for 32 A so. They're hooked up to a decent sized heatsink, but shared with four others though
[21:58] <Nauti> But 20 A is for the whole circuit and shared on 8 MOSFETS individually rated for 32 A I think that should be ok?
[21:58] <gordonDrogon> probably :)
[21:58] <ali1234> it depends on the motors
[21:58] <Nauti> Also if I wanted to run a fat load I could just hook up two different mosfets to the same line and just use a common gate input?
[21:58] <ali1234> yes
[21:58] <Nauti> But I won't run any fat motors as far as I know
[21:58] <Nauti> Just planning an automation system for my van
[21:59] <Nauti> Installing 300 W solar and just got the regulator :) Built a case for my raspberry pi and got home assistant running on it now
[21:59] <ali1234> but you still haven't told us what kind of motors...
[21:59] <gordonDrogon> I'd probably stick some high power flyback diodes over the motors too.
[22:00] <Nauti> I think the biggest load will be the car audio system actually, but I might use a relay for that if it uses a lot
[22:00] <Nauti> But it's only the car stereo and it runs directly from the battery so that shouldn't be an issue when I think of it
[22:00] <Nauti> ali1234: no motors
