[0:00] <GenteelBen> HEVC (H.265, commonly encoded using the x265 library) is the de facto successor to AVC (H.264, commonly encoded using the x264 library).

[0:00] <GenteelBen> nolsen: HEVC encoders are pretty immature right now. The image quality is still better with AVC (h.264 with x264) but the file sizes AVC are much bigger, obviously.
[0:01] <GenteelBen> *file sizes of AVC files
[0:01] <nolsen> Yea I'm not worried about size since I'm streaming it to my RAID server.

[0:56] <Mathis> anyone knows a channel for Windows IoT ?

[1:00] <mfa298> this channel might be the best youd manage for IoT, but considering the number of people who know of it probably isnt that high, and those that know something useful about it is lower im not sure how much advice youd get here
[1:00] <mfa298> as ShorTie says, the forum is probably the best place

[1:36] <ShorTie> ATM's still running XP
[1:37] <plugwash> Afaict IoT is a crippled version of windows, maybe suitable for doing embedded development if you are a MS shop that keeps up with the latest technologies.
[1:37] <akk> ok, Mathis said "Windows IoT" so I assumed it was a windows thing. I don't have any ATMs either, though.
[1:38] <plugwash> AIUI it's not suitable for porting legacy windows crap because it lacks the traditional desktop APIS, it can only run "universal" applications.
[1:38] <Mathis> well, my goal is to implement some Windows app for my raspberry which is being controlled by a normal touch monitor
[1:39] <Mathis> there seems to be absolutely noone trying to do the same...

[8:20] <Li> WPA-PSK

[8:22] <jmcgnh> Li: what's the IP address assigned to the pi? static or DHCP from your router or whoever in your network hands out addresses?
[8:24] <Li> static within the same network segment but it was funny that I couldn't get wifi up running from the pi gui
[8:24] <Li> I couldn't find anything on network interface until I used ifconfig wlan0 up; dhcp_client
[8:25] <Li> only then I was able to see it up and running
[8:26] * Obi-Wan (~obi-wan@unaffiliated/obi-wan) has joined #raspberrypi
[8:27] <jmcgnh> Li: not sure. Now that I think of it, I've never successfully used my pi with WiFi except for a brief hookup to my iPhone as a hotspot. My home network is still on WEP because of a couple of old, old computers (not a great excuse, I know).
[8:28] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[8:29] <jmcgnh> Li: So, you want to dig into your routing table?
[8:30] <Li> on this video "pi 2" it shows wifi configuration tool that I can't find on pi 3
[8:30] <Li> https://youtu.be/PVUSF3l6s1s?t=504
[8:31] <Li> the only available is the network indicator icon where you can only setup the interface ip and stuff of that nature. I can't tell how start the card without command line
[8:31] <davr0s> the rpi can only use 1 camera, right?
[8:32] <davr0s> do any of the boards allow 2 simultaneous cameras
[8:32] <davr0s> (e.g. for stereo capture) ... or are you best of using 2 rpi's synchronized
[8:32] <jmcgnh> davr0s: there's only one connector for a camera...I've not tried to see what it does if I plug in a USB camera, but I could try that tomorrow if you like.
[8:33] <davr0s> i think the USB camera has low bandwidth (low USB bandwidth),
[8:33] <davr0s> i wonder if something like the asus tinkerboard might be better with usb cameas
[8:34] <jmcgnh> davr0s: no experience on that front, I'm afraid.
[8:34] <davr0s> i do actually have 2 x rpi2,
[8:35] <jmcgnh> Li: command line should be sufficient
[8:35] <Li> sufficient doesn't mean complete
[8:35] <jmcgnh> Li: but you're saying you don't have command line access?
[8:37] <Li> jmcgnh: I'm more into learning how things are working than just getting them work and run away with it
[8:38] <Li> e.g. sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service
[8:38] <Li> it's running normally on ubuntu machine but not pi 3
[8:39] <Li> I know the network is working on the PI but that is not my ultimate goal, there is always one question
[8:39] <jmcgnh> Li: I hope I wasn't suggesting that. So, to learn how things work, I suggest taking a look at your routing table.
[8:39] <Li> more*
[8:41] <Li> cool, that is one nice suggestion too .. I found out why wifi didn't started automatically. I missed adding this line "scan_ssid=1"

[18:21] <akk> The question isn't how to get v56, it's how to update your system so you have packages that work together.
[18:21] <akk> You should update your system regularly because otherwise, it's vulnerable to attacks.
[18:22] <akk> sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

[22:22] <fogus> How can I create a Pi .img file that is smaller than my current SD card?
[22:22] <wadadli> pi is just blinking yellow, ever 3 seconds
[22:22] <wadadli> is this a good sign?
[22:23] <wadadli> not seeing it on the network however
[22:23] <fogus> For example, I have an 8GB card, and used win32diskimager to write the raspberian to it. I did not expand the partitions, but it looks like it did so automatically.
[22:24] <Encrypt> Yep
[22:24] <Encrypt> fogus, I think you can dd it and then resize the FS on your PC
[22:25] <Encrypt> It will shrink the FS
[22:25] <Encrypt> fogus, https://softwarebakery.com//shrinking-images-on-linux
[22:25] <Encrypt> fogus, https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=145712
[22:26] <akk> I tried to shrink an image on linux with gparted but that didn't work.
[22:26] <wadadli> now it's completely stopped blinking

[22:26] <akk> I don't think I was using a loopback device like that page suggests, though, so maybe that's the difference.
[22:26] <fogus> Encrypt: makes sense. is there an easier way to do it if I can start from scratch?
[22:27] <fogus> Like, is there a way to tell Raspberian to start only using 7GB?
[22:27] <fogus> I want a slightly-less-than 8GB image so it will be guaranteed to work with all 8GB and larger cards
[22:27] <Encrypt> There may be a way to prevent it from expanding
[22:27] <wadadli> maybe it can't read the sd card?
[22:27] <Encrypt> As you mention, when you use a fresh disk image, raspbian indeed automatically expands the FS
[22:28] <Encrypt> It didn't do so in the past, that's a relatively new feature, more "user friendly" I'd say
[22:28] <fogus> ah - https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/47773/disable-auto-file-system-expansion-in-new-jessie-image-2016-05-10
[22:28] <Encrypt> If you just start learning Linux, it would be hard figuring out how to use the complete space of your SD card ;)

[22:38] <fogus> Encrypt: although, I think that guy is wrong about Stretch not working with this... I just re-flashed with Stretch and I see `init=/usr/lib/raspi-config/init_resize.sh` at the end of my cmdline.txt

[23:00] <wadadli> wpa_supplicant.service -> ../../../../lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service
[23:02] <mfa298> if it's a clean raspbian stretch image it oguht to start wpa_supplicant anyway if it's got a valid config (which you can put in the fat boot partition)
