[1:08] <i-make-robots> My pi b+ has been having trouble staying online. i wrote a bash script to ifdown/ifup whenever it loses inet address. now ifconfig says it is up and i can ping the world, but nobody outside the device can access it: even ssh to the pi times out and ping gets no response. what am I doing wrong?
[1:08] <i-make-robots> I have swapped the eth cables to the pi AND the pi hardware, keeping only the SD card.
[1:10] * bit_mask (~bit_mask@pool-100-35-64-150.nwrknj.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:12] * ConkyAxis (~ConkyAxis@cpc82865-enfi22-2-0-cust482.20-2.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:14] <tristero> If you can you ping another local machine, try pinging your Pi from there. I suspect a routing problem.
[1:15] <tristero> (not in your Pi, but in whatever router is handing out the Pi's address; maybe a firewall rule?)
[1:15] * majorshake (~chat@46.101.130.233) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:19] <i-make-robots> i did try pinging it. got nothing.
[1:19] <i-make-robots> it's an old tp-link router with a terrible gui. i don't see any fw rules. I cannot ping the pi from the router's diagnostic panel.
[1:19] * swift110 (~swift110@unaffiliated/swift110) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:19] * Afkbio (~Afk@unaffiliated/afkbio) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:20] <BurtyB> is it via wifi? do you have both wifi/eth setup? are you sure the IP isn't used elsewhere on the network?
[1:23] * tdy (~tdy@unaffiliated/tdy) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[1:26] <i-make-robots> ethernet
[1:27] <i-make-robots> nowhere else in my network.
[1:27] <i-make-robots> it's a static ip (because i need to find it reliably to get the video feed from the picam). the router has no dhcp leases.
[1:28] * FleXx (~Kn0wledge@121-200-14-95.NBN.bne.aussiebb.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:28] <i-make-robots> so i didn't assign a static ip in the dhcp block
[1:28] * duckpuppy (~patrickai@h220.4.30.71.dynamic.ip.windstream.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:28] <i-make-robots> there's a windows pc on the same router in the same subnet, it can get online just fine.
[1:29] <i-make-robots> it's ip is also static to prevent any possibility of a conflict. in fact i'm going to go reconfirm that now, because i feel paranoid.

[3:03] <genr8_> i was thinking. why did he say resistor ? maybe because it produces a reference voltage like a resistor voltage divider ?

[3:21] <poisonby> My problem was I never understood electricity itself and how it moved through components. People kept talking about how to look at it like water and stuff but it never made sense to me, and the physical explanation didn't make sense to me either
[3:22] <poisonby> I kinda had to look for another field of study

[5:36] <AfonsoHenriques> hi, after trying to (1) make RPi as NAS storage system, (2) minecraft server, (3) tiny pc - and fail in everything after dozens of times, I'm starting to think that RPi is a very overrated stuff. Sorry for saying it if sounds offensive, but its not my intent. Dude, I'm using a hub (uh722) which doesnt suck RPi's energy/perfomance at all, and I cant fucking plug a decent wifi adapter

[9:29] <nmo> hi all. I've got a rpi3 (B) that I use for irc pretty much and nothing else. I've got an issue where the unit "lags" when I overclock it.. has anyone experienced anything similar to this? I've overclocked it to 1350 (can provide all oc settings), and moderated temperatures/load which are all fine.
[9:30] <mlelstv> don't overclock then :)
[9:31] <mlelstv> the point with overclocking is that things start to malfunction in very random ways.

[12:35] <BurtyB> GrandPa-G, if it's Raspbian it will get an address in 169.254.0.0/16 unless your laptop runs a dhcp server

[12:40] <BurtyB> GrandPa-G, no idea what a "bottle web host" is but it prob depends on the laptop - if it also auto gets an IP in that range and you have bonjour then you can prob just browser to http://raspberrypi.local/ or whatever the pi is called

[12:43] <GrandPa-G> BurtyB:the web host is just a simple python program running on pi normal port 80 http stuff. Since the laptop is probably setup up as a dhcp (normal for most novice users) it appears the two computers are on totally different nets.
[12:44] <GrandPa-G> BurtyB:I want an average Joe with his laptop to be able to directly connect to the pi's web host with the least changes on their laptop. That is the goal.

[20:04] <ShapeShifter499> hi
[20:04] <ShapeShifter499> if I had to use swap (file or partition) on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ is it faster to use a USB Hard Drive or store it on the SD card?
[20:04] <CoJaBo> Both will be deathly slow
[20:05] <ShapeShifter499> I know but which would be faster of the two?
[20:05] <CoJaBo> My guess is that the USB harddrive will still be faster
[20:05] * mythos (~mythos@unaffiliated/mythos) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[20:05] <CoJaBo> SDcards are really, reeeeeeaaalllly bad at small random writes.
[20:05] <ShapeShifter499> Does it make sense to enable stuff like zram and zswap?
[20:05] <ShapeShifter499> I plan on running Nextcloud
[20:06] <CoJaBo> Compression performance on the pi is probably going to be too slow, and zram doesn't seem to work well with that little ram anyway

[20:11] <shbrngdo> sshfs? that sounds intersting. I was thinking things like 'rsync' 'scp' 'sftp' but yeah, that sounds interesting
[20:12] <ShapeShifter499> right ok but what about on device encryption?
[20:12] <shbrngdo> another possibility, just enable file uploads on a web server. I DL'd a perl script a while back that does this. I'm sure it's still around.
[20:12] <ShapeShifter499> I know Nextcloud had that feature to encrypt on upload
[20:12] <shbrngdo> https
[20:12] <vutral|kali> nextcloud runs fine on raspberry p
[20:12] <shbrngdo> or you can encrypt it before you upload it
[20:13] <shbrngdo> I'm just saying that maybe solutions exist that can do the same thing
[20:13] <ShapeShifter499> vutral|kali: I might still try Nextcloud anyways but I'm just worried about ram

[20:13] <vutral|kali> ShapeShifter499: it uses only 128mb ram here with apache2 :p

[20:14] <ShapeShifter499> vutral|kali: mind sharing your config?
[20:14] <shbrngdo> i was thinking "cloud processes" which of course would eat it up really fast
[20:14] <vutral|kali> ShapeShifter499: its all standard :p
[20:14] <vutral|kali> ShapeShifter499: just apt-get install apache2 php and addin nextcloud

[20:15] <ShapeShifter499> vutral|kali: and mariadb
[20:15] <vutral|kali> if you worry about ram use nginx
[20:15] <shbrngdo> O
[20:15] <vutral|kali> i dont use mariadb i use sqlite
[20:16] <shbrngdo> I'm not a fan of 'nginx' because of so many sites that give me a 500 error because I disable scripting
[20:16] <vutral|kali> :D
[20:16] <shbrngdo> the idea that the web server somehow enforces that IRKS me
[20:17] <CoJaBo> shbrngdo: I think that's clownflare, not nginx tho
[20:17] <vutral|kali> i am now up to installing ruby on rails on my raspi
[20:17] <shbrngdo> actually 403 error in this one case - says 'forbidden' and 'nginx'
[20:18] <shbrngdo> but yeah if clown-fare is doing it, I blame them
[20:18] <shbrngdo> I've always been curious why you need "all this cruft" as a backend for a web site. I can hand-code a web site in html with tables and get superior-looking pages in my opinion
[20:19] <shbrngdo> and no need for scripting
[20:19] <shbrngdo> looks good on a phone, too
[20:19] <ShapeShifter499> I haven't used MySQL enough to really understand what the heck is different from MariaDB or SQLight
[20:19] <ShapeShifter499> *SQlite
[20:19] <shbrngdo> is SQlite based on MySQL? I know Maria forked from it after it was sold to Oracle
[20:19] <vutral|kali> ShapeShifter499: postgresql is better than mariadb
[20:20] <shbrngdo> I use PG too, yeah. I don't like MySQL's security model. It's tedious
[20:20] * sdoherty (sdoherty@nat/redhat/x-diyecjjsuautxnlq) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[20:20] <BurtyB> err tedious?
[20:21] <shbrngdo> I tried to set up MySQL for a simple SQL query and I had to edit several tables, and still couldn't get it right by reading the instructions. I had PG set up in seconds.
[20:21] <Tenkawa> shbrngdo: no
[20:21] <ShapeShifter499> vutral|kali: but sqlite uses less ram then postgresql
[20:21] <ShapeShifter499> ?
[20:22] <BurtyB> shbrngdo, you should be on your way with a couple of inserts and a flush but as with most things there are many ways to do things
[20:22] <Tenkawa> sqlite is great for light weight single connection databases
[20:22] <zamba> ShapeShifter499: sqlite uses no ram
[20:22] <zamba> ShapeShifter499: it's not a database server, as both postgresql and mysql are
[20:23] <zamba> ShapeShifter499: the sqlite binary will however consume some ram when interacting with the database and the amount directly relates to the amount of data you're dealing with
[20:23] <Tenkawa> its ultra fast and robust but not designed for multi user concurrent
[20:23] <shbrngdo> BurtyB - but that was my point. I tried it using the available instructions at the time, it wasn't working, I was angry, and when I tried PG it was simple. Eventually I did get the MySQL working, after way too much work. Then I noticed that quote marks were being used within ODBC inserts, etc..
[20:23] <CoJaBo> shbrngdo: It's either clownflare or modpagespeed; those are the usual culprits, anyway.
[20:23] <shbrngdo> MySQL's handling of embedded quotes within strings doesn't fit the SQL standard. oops.
[20:24] <ShapeShifter499> zamba: so it doesn't sit around waiting for other programs to make use of it
[20:24] <vutral|kali> clownflare? lol
[20:24] <ShapeShifter499> it just loads up when something requests it
[20:24] <BurtyB> shbrngdo, tbh I had the opposite experience - tho that was around 18 years ago so things have prob moved on by now

[20:38] <Owner> im shutting it down
[20:39] <shbrngdo> I've been trying NOT to use el-cheapo SD cards
[20:39] <shbrngdo> most of mine are sandisk
[20:39] <Owner> sandisk HCI
[20:39] <IT_Sean> life is too short to use a crap sd card.
[20:39] <Owner> i dont want to use any of them...ive had so many flash drives die on me
[20:40] <shbrngdo> that's a little disturbing then. it does suggest a possible hardware problem on the RPi
[20:40] <cirdan> sandisk a1 are nice
[20:40] <Owner> rather use spinning disk
[20:40] <cirdan> more power. things need 1.2a to spin up
[20:40] <cirdan> the little ones anyway
[20:40] <shbrngdo> he said the power supply was 2.5A
[20:40] <Owner> we have 10 rpis running fine
[20:40] * dr3w_ (~dr3w_@abercs/dr3w) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:41] <shbrngdo> but I don't think the RPi's USB power could drive 1.2A - you'd need a split-power cable for it
[20:41] <Owner> but one we sent to a remote location crashes all the time
[20:41] <CoJaBo> Counterfeit sandisk cards are pretty common, so there's usually no point in paying more for brand-name
[20:41] <cirdan> warranty?
[20:41] <Owner> updatedb runs and ext4 complains about bad inodes
[20:41] <shbrngdo> Owner - can you check the 3.3v bus on it? see if it's overvolting/undervolting
[20:41] <shbrngdo> just use the pin on the GPIO header
[20:41] <shbrngdo> I suspect the BCM processor will handle this better than an SD card if the voltage is wrong
[20:41] <Owner> they are brand new 3b+
[20:42] <shbrngdo> yes but sometimes things are broken when you buy them. [you should at least rule it out]
[20:42] <Owner> the old 2b+ or w/e is running fine, but the new one started crashing as soon as we sent it to customer
[20:42] <shbrngdo> the question here is 'what did the customer do to it' - I'd test it to make sure it wasn't fried
[20:42] <Owner> i think 'updatedb' shoudl be able to run without ext4 crashing
[20:43] <Owner> shbrngdo: well its back up online now, but it will crash again
[20:43] <Owner> found ext4 errors in syslog
[20:43] <shbrngdo> power glitches that happen while an Sd card is internally trying to write the data can cause serious trouble
[20:44] <shbrngdo> I suppose it would depend on how the write cycles work. newer/larger cards would probalby have higher current spikes, but average current would be lower than the slower cards [I've actually measured this]
[20:45] <shbrngdo> typically an SD card will do page-based writes, where it erases a block and then writes it. If it's intelligently designed, it rotates free blocks around to equalize runtime on the bits
[20:45] <shbrngdo> sorta like "flash file system"
[20:46] <shbrngdo> anyway that erase/write process is critical. If the voltage fluctuates too much during that process, I can see corruption happening. Customer may not be doing what you think, and that might've caused it
[20:46] <shbrngdo> er, caused the device to be messed up anyway
[20:47] <Owner> thats true
[20:47] <Owner> customer 'may' have put it on a USB battery
[20:47] <cirdan> could have reused old power supply or something 5v1a ;-)
[20:47] <shbrngdo> or the RPi itself. "let's draw 2A from the 3.3v pin - no wait, we can't do that. Oops". and now it's 3.5V, and varies a lot.
[20:47] <cirdan> yeah, same

[20:48] <Owner> did he nuke it?
[20:48] <cirdan> shbrngdo: hope you sent a bill back for $$$
[20:48] <shbrngdo> USB batteries can usually supply the necessary current but there's no guarantee...
[20:49] <cirdan> depends if it ws hooked to the 1a port or the 2-2.4a port

[20:50] <shbrngdo> Owner - try configuring the serial port and watch that output [you could even log it]
[20:50] <cirdan> Owner: kinda like the blue screen instant reboot :)

[20:57] <Owner> not a software workaround
[20:57] <cirdan> not a workaround, insurance/alerts
[20:57] <Owner> you recommend i use zfs on a broken sd card?
[20:58] <cirdan> no on good ones
[20:58] <Owner> if i have a good one, i can use ext4
[20:58] <Owner> servers run on ext4 for years with no issues
[20:58] <shbrngdo> zfs is pretty solid. I suppose you _could_ install FreeBSD... though the RPi image doesn't have a zpool. Interesting idea though.
[20:58] <shbrngdo> FBSD support for Rpi 3 is still "in the works".
[20:59] <cirdan> shbrngdo: i make a howto for linux, can do it with raspbian
[20:59] <cirdan> just build it and make an initrd
[20:59] <shbrngdo> it'd be easier if the thing is built on first startup, using the remaining space on the SD card
[20:59] <shbrngdo> you'd have an image that did that automatically, as an example
[21:00] <cirdan> yeah you can do it w/o expanding the lite image, or you can install it to usb and overwrite the sd card partition
[21:00] <cirdan> shbrngdo: base install only takes 800m when it's on zfs :)
[21:00] <shbrngdo> really? interesting. zfs with compression, probably

[21:04] <cirdan> zfs doesn't journal
[21:04] <shbrngdo> you sure?

[21:07] <shbrngdo> there's either a /proc or a /sys in linux to change kernel error messages - look for one called 'printk'
[21:08] <shbrngdo> it'll contain 3 numbers. I forget what you set them to in order to limit error message output on the main console or a serial console

[23:34] <LogBen> Hi, I've been having some problems with my Pi
[23:34] <ShorTie> like ??
[23:35] <LogBen> I've looked at the common problems page, and I think my PSU is underrated (1A output vs 2A recommended)
[23:35] <LogBen> However, it worked fine in the past
[23:35] <LogBen> I did get the rainbow square in the corner of the screen while using before, so I know that that is a problem
[23:35] <LogBen> However, lately it has started to fail booting
[23:36] <ShorTie> bad power corrupts the sdcard
[23:36] <LogBen> I tried it yesterday and it wouldn't load NOOBs, didn't even have the option. It just cycled between the rainbow startup screen and shutting down
[23:36] * kingmanor (~kingmanor@ool-3f8ff1b3.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:36] <LogBen> Ah, okay
[23:36] <ShorTie> i like 5.25v@3amps for a pi
[23:36] <LogBen> So rewrite the SD card and wait until the good PSU comes?
[23:37] <LogBen> I bought the recommended 2.5A 5V one
[23:37] <ShorTie> be my guess
[23:37] <Bitweasil> Yeah. Get a proper PSU, restart with a fresh image, and then see how it works.
[23:37] <Bitweasil> The Pi3 is hard on the power supplies.
[23:37] <LogBen> i'm running the Pi 2, probably should have mentioned that :P
[23:37] * nibble_zero (~nibble_ze@37.244.231.177) Quit (Quit: nibble_zero)
[23:37] <Bitweasil> 5.25@3A is a good suggestion. You can't run much more than 3A through a micro USB port.
[23:37] <Bitweasil> Well, still, if you're getting the rainbow square, it's starving.
[23:38] <LogBen> Yeah, that was with the old one
[23:38] <LogBen> 4V, 1A
[23:38] <Tenkawa> greycat: have you seen any good benchmarks between the mmc interface and usb controller in using it for running the os?
[23:38] <Tenkawa> oops
[23:38] <Tenkawa> just general q
[23:39] <Tenkawa> not meant for anyone specific
[23:39] <Tenkawa> man my typing is off
[23:39] <Bitweasil> As in booting off a USB drive?
[23:39] <Bitweasil> Should be about 50% faster raw throughput, someone did a post on that not that long ago.

[23:39] <cirdan> which is faster
[23:39] <Tenkawa> Bitweasil: usb drive to run it all on
[23:39] <Bitweasil> https://syonyk.blogspot.com/2018/03/project-pi3desk-building-awesome-pi3.html
[23:39] <Bitweasil> USB is faster, especially if you get a good SSD on it.
[23:40] <Bitweasil> I mean, it's still glacial...
[23:40] <Tenkawa> cirdan: not really sure... i'm more curious how good the backplane io is for the 2
[23:40] <Bitweasil> Not amazing. It's only USB2.
[23:41] <Tenkawa> I'm just looking at possibly forgoing microusb and using usb more
[23:43] <cirdan> the new gen of a2 rated cards should make a big diff, 10k iops i think
[23:43] <cirdan> not like a good ssd but then again it's only usb2
[23:43] <Tenkawa> but the controller still needs the throughput

[23:45] <Bitweasil> The SD card interface is like a 4 bit interface. It's slow on the best of days. Even before you get into SD cards not being well suited to random IOPS.
[23:46] <cirdan> hmm
[23:49] <LogBen> Okay so there is a new problem
