[1:04] <red9> network booting is nice.
[1:05] <red9> But overall. It's wether you need the capacity or capability that decides if it's a good choice to get one.
[1:06] <red9> However if it's capacity per se you need. The Pi will never really do.
[1:06] <red9> It got PoE option too.
[1:06] * tdy (~tdy@unaffiliated/tdy) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:07] <GrandPa-G> leftyfb:why would that make a difference? It is all local net. Same problem if it is directly connected.

[1:53] <ShapeShifter499> does anyone think a MySQL database like MariaDB running on a a Raspberry Pi 3B+ could kill a SD card?
[1:54] <ShapeShifter499> It's a 128Gb SD Card, I'm thinking at the size of this SD that it has enough failover blocks to not be a concern for quite some time but I rather not have my server stop working because of the SD card
[1:55] * AbouEmre (~Thunderbi@196.11.87.250) Quit (Quit: AbouEmre)
[1:56] <giddles> rootfs on external

[1:59] <giddles> finish
[1:59] <giddles> it boots first from sd, then went to external

[2:07] <giddles> oh come on...
[2:07] <giddles> i think it was sys and proc who need a chmod and also /tmp
[2:07] <giddles> just google
[2:08] <ShapeShifter499> giddles: I thought all I needed to do was power down and 'mv' or 'cp -a' (whatever mode that preserves the permissions) from the sd card to a ext4 formated drive.
[2:09] <giddles> haha
[2:09] <giddles> google
[2:09] <ShapeShifter499> I have a far smaller sd card sitting around I could use for the /boot
[2:12] <ShapeShifter499> giddles: a quick search online doesn't suggest I have to worry about /tmp or /sys (or whatever) permissions as long as I use a method that preserves file and folder permissions
[2:12] <giddles> .../proc

[2:14] <giddles> ya seems im a lowballer compared to your genius
[2:15] <giddles> now party hard and grind your sd-card lifetime :)
[2:16] <ShapeShifter499> I don't know why SD cards are so all over the place

[2:35] <red9> The problem with databases in general is that they have frequent writes (asfaik) so any media that is prone to wear is essentially doomed. You will need to attach spinning rust or have UPS'd DRAM.

[4:51] <i-make-robots> so... i've tried three raspberry pis to stream video across my LAN. all fail. nmap says no port is open on the pi.
[4:51] <i-make-robots> i'm using the standard raspivid pipe to cvlc. there are no iptable rules, so afaik there's no firewall blocking the setup
[4:51] * sockspls is now known as SocksPls
[4:52] <d0rm0us3> what video server software are you using?
[4:52] <i-make-robots> i can ssh to the pi so i know that the router AND i can apt-get update from the pi, so i have 2 way internet.
[4:52] <i-make-robots> d0rm0us3: i tried raspvid piped to cvlc, then vlc directly from ///dev/video0.
[4:53] <i-make-robots> the /etc/modules table was updated with the camera and i ran a modprobe. i can raspivid and see the feed on the hdmi output
[4:53] <i-make-robots> so the camera works.
[4:53] <i-make-robots> and the driver works.
[4:53] <i-make-robots> i'm trying to open on port 8554. is that a bad port? i also tried on 12345.
[4:54] <i-make-robots> i had this whole stupid setup working 6 months ago but didn't document the steps to get it working (doh)
[4:55] * BeamWatcher (~gashead76@208.117.74.236) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[4:55] <i-make-robots> my startup command is copied directly from https://www.lewisroberts.com/2015/05/15/raspberry-pi-mjpeg-at-30fps/
[4:55] <i-make-robots> i put it in a shell script so i don't have to keep retyping it

[4:57] * BeamWatcher (~gashead76@208.117.74.236) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:58] <i-make-robots> so wtf am i missing, please? I just don't get it...
[4:58] <i-make-robots> three days spent on this stupid thing...
[4:59] <i-make-robots> on the receiving side i tried vlc, then i tried a web browser to the port, then i tried nmap to see if the port was even open. it isn't.
[4:59] <i-make-robots> and yet cvlc on the server doesn't say failed to open port or something obvious like that.
[4:59] * kushal (~hopless@fedora/kushal) has joined #raspberrypi
[5:00] <i-make-robots> with -vvv i get a lot of "core input debug; buffering 0%"

[5:03] * d4re (~d4re@gateway/tor-sasl/d4re) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[5:05] <d0rm0us3> Beats me..
[5:05] <d0rm0us3> I'd look at your vlc config see if you can see anything there.
[5:06] <d0rm0us3> I'm presuming that cvlc calls vlc
[5:06] <i-make-robots> i just tried to start the server, then vlc http://128.0.0.1:8554/webcam.mjpeg (the expected url) and i get "cannot connect to 8554"
[5:06] <i-make-robots> so i think somehow the outbound server is not a go.
[5:06] <d0rm0us3> Are you crossing a network boundary?
[5:07] <i-make-robots> the sender and receiver are on the same router.
[5:07] <i-make-robots> not sure if that answers the question
[5:07] <i-make-robots> when i run cli vlc it's on the pi that's supposed to be serving up the video
[5:08] <i-make-robots> i thoguht it might display the vide to hdmi, overlayed on my text input.
[5:08] <d0rm0us3> Dig into cvlc and see where it pulls the config
[5:09] <d0rm0us3> somewhere in the config it would need to attach to the cam feed.
[5:10] <i-make-robots> i tell it to get ///dev/video0
[5:10] <d0rm0us3> I really don't have a clue.. way outta my depth... sorry
[5:10] <i-make-robots> sorry :
[5:10] <i-make-robots> cvlc --no-audio v4l2:///dev/video0 --v4l2-width 1920 --v4l2-height 1080 --v4l2-chroma MJPG --v4l2-hflip 1 --v4l2-vflip 1 --sout '#standard{access=http{mime=multipart/x-mixed-replace;boundary=--7b3cc56e5f51db803f790dad720ed50a},mux=mpjpeg,dst=:8554/}' -I dummy
[5:12] <d0rm0us3> break out debug
[5:12] <d0rm0us3> check first for that process to be shown in ps aux | grep vlc
[5:13] <d0rm0us3> If you don't see it there it's not properly 'deploying' itself.
[5:14] <d0rm0us3> If you do attach gdb
[5:14] <d0rm0us3> check the web for the options on gdb
[5:14] <d0rm0us3> ie: attaching to a running process.
[5:14] <d0rm0us3> bout as much as I can advise you on.

[5:18] <i-make-robots> ps says vlc is running.
[5:18] <i-make-robots> nmap at the same times says no ports open.
[5:18] <i-make-robots> attach gdb?
[5:18] <d0rm0us3> I would.
[5:19] <d0rm0us3> Then you can start trouble shooting the config
[5:19] <d0rm0us3> ie: chg the config in whatever way you want to impact the server then do a SIGHUP to the pid
[5:19] <d0rm0us3> watch the gdb...
[5:20] <d0rm0us3> Don't know what to tell ya to look for..

[16:56] <cart_man> Hi everyone. I am trying to commuicate to a GSM/GNSS/Bluetooth/GPS HAT on my Raspberry ZERO . I am not having allot of luck though. I say ... sudo screen /dev/ttyS0 115200 and then nothing comes through. Even if I try /dev/serial1 nothing happens
[16:56] <cart_man> Should I first activate it or?
[16:57] <BCMM> dogbert2: i know this is a little bit offtopic, but do you know a good place to discuss/find information about Libre Computer stuff?
[16:57] <BCMM> dogbert2: i was looking at the Renegade the other day (because USB3), and kind of want to know how it differs from the rock64
[16:58] <aliasunknown> Hello everyone
[16:58] <dogbert2> not really...armbian forums have some discussions going on...but one of the things with SBC's (RPi, Orange/BananaPI, Libre)...I wouldn't go too bleeding edge...the libre lacks built-in wireless and gige...but has HDMI 2.0, etc
[16:58] <aliasunknown> Does anybody have an idea why how often I read from the ADC affects the values.
[16:59] <dogbert2> got wlan0 up and running across system restarts on the libre...yay
[16:59] <aliasunknown> if I read very fast non stop I seem to get different values than if I read with a long delay
[16:59] <dogbert2> nmtui is great for configuration...

[17:03] <aliasunknown> im using a Max128 which has a conversion time upto 10 us and I have 1 ms delay between reads
[17:04] <aliasunknown> it actually seems to be better the faster it goes
[17:04] <aliasunknown> cross talk sounds like what i might have

[17:10] <red9> aliasunknown, Ypu must also decouple between the digital and analog domain in the A/D converter.
[17:11] <red9> Usually this is done through som LC filter(s). Perheps evena a local linear regulator.
[17:11] <aliasunknown> I have heard this before but how? what does that mean? seperate grounds?
[17:11] <aliasunknown> ah i c
[17:11] <red9> LDO's are however prone to self oscillation.
[17:11] <aliasunknown> LDO?
[17:11] <red9> Low Voltage Drop - regulator.
[17:12] <aliasunknown> so in a way this could be noise from the supply?
[17:12] <red9> Have a look in a A/D datasheet in regards to "typical application" schematics.
[17:12] * dr3w_ (~dr3w_@abercs/dr3w) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:12] <aliasunknown> does decoupling mean adding a filter on the 3v before hitting the ADC/analog?
[17:12] <red9> yep
[17:13] <red9> esp the analog part. But it certainly won't hurt with the same on the digital one too. Though less tough.
[17:13] <aliasunknown> just to clarify, so I take the 3V from the pi which goes thru a LC filter that decouples the digital from analog?
[17:13] <red9> kind of..
[17:13] <red9> Look at datasheets.........
[17:14] <aliasunknown> I have... i dont fully understand thus why i am here
[17:14] <aliasunknown> it has Agnd and Dgnd both together

[23:19] <Habbie> ok, so your /boot is not corrupted
[23:19] <Habbie> and your / (root) is not entirely gone either
[23:20] <Habbie> you have two choices now
[23:20] <Habbie> 'figure this out' or 'reinstall'
[23:20] <Habbie> this depends on questions such as 'is there any important data on there' and 'can i easily set the machine up the way i like it again'
[23:21] <Habbie> and also 'do i have a spare SD'
[23:21] <Warmy> It took me quite a long time to do, it's been set up as a headless machine.
[23:21] <Habbie> ok
[23:21] <Habbie> do you have any backups?
[23:21] <Warmy> I currently do not have a spare SD. And i have no backup sadly :( never imagined this could happen once it was set up?
[23:22] <Habbie> what kind of -other- machine do you have available with an sd card reader?
[23:22] <Warmy> i have a USB micro sd card reader which i initially used to install raspian lite
[23:22] <Habbie> ok
[23:22] <Habbie> use that to backup your SD
[23:22] <Habbie> that is step 1
