[3:37] <Project86__> I hear zram can increase rpi3 speeds at like 30% or more (can't recall the number). I've learned very little about swap space.. is this safe to use? I get the general idea of how it works, but does adding that much activity to the sd card contribute to burning it out faster?

[12:22] <gordonDrogon> Project86__, zram gives you a ramdisk that uses compression technolony. this ramdisk is then typically turned into a swap-file, so you get a little less ream ram but more (sometimes 2x) swap space which is slightly slower than real ram but faster than swap on SD/USB disk, etc.
[12:23] <gordonDrogon> Personally... Except in a few rare circumstances, I'm of the opinion that if you need swap then the Pi is not the right platform for you.
[12:24] <gordonDrogon> and what I do on Pi's I car about is to create a small amount of SD card swap (just a few 100MB) and turn 'swappiness' up. That way, some lesser used programs and data can be moved to swap, leaving a little more real RAM for frequently used programs.
[12:29] <SpeedEvil> As a general point, swapping to SD will murder your remaining SD bandwidth, in most cases.
[12:29] <SpeedEvil> Even without raising life issues.
[12:30] <SpeedEvil> Swapping to network may actually end up faster too, for many/most SD card types.

[13:33] <ebarch> failure is different than spec'd for the board :P it's possible something has just gone bad

[13:40] <ebarch> hah. it's mind boggling what some "companies" get away with. almost as disturbing as the microcontrollers you buy in reels that are just chunks of copper with the casing around them. or SD cards that claim 64GB but loop over a 2GB flash chip

[15:00] * MacGeek (~BSD@host188-232-dynamic.4-87-r.retail.telecomitalia.it) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:00] <jubalh> wrote a small script that wnats to use picamera, but when i run it i get this:

[15:01] * collyrium (~godlessfa@unaffiliated/godlessfather) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:01] <ebarch> jubalh: check your CPU/GPU split. that's in raspi-config as well. if you're taking large resolution images, the GPU needs more memory

[15:05] <jubalh> well i'm not sure if its a large resolution, it should just be a normal pic via official raspi cam 2
[15:05] * YuGiOhJCJ (~YuGiOhJCJ@gateway/tor-sasl/yugiohjcj) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:05] <jubalh> ebarch: gpu split seems to be set to 128MB
[15:06] <ebarch> hmm. normally that is fine. I think I've had to bump it past there once when recording high res video
[15:06] <jubalh> if a cable is loose i could get the same error message?
[15:06] <ebarch> you could try temporarily bumping it up just for a sanity check, though
[15:06] <jubalh> so i shouldnt really listen to the message?
[15:06] <jubalh> hmm ok
[15:06] <ebarch> yeah, it could be possible that it's a connection issue
[15:07] <ebarch> make sure you've got the ribbon in the right way as well. I've messed that up before :P

[15:09] <ebarch> good to know. i'd drop it back to 128 and look at the connection
[15:09] <jubalh> well i had it working before, just didnt touch the pi for some time and was no surpsied that it didnt work. maybe its the cable indeed

[19:09] <IwandeRerC> Anyone has some links on how to setup Pi with ability to boot to multiple OSes in multiple partitions in an external drive? Something that will support custom OSes like Kali linux?
[19:11] <ebarch> IwandeRerC: take a look at https://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot
[19:11] * markmcb (~markmcb@23.226.128.22.adsl.inet-telecom.org) has joined #raspberrypi
[19:12] <ebarch> omgitsgela: "best" is debatable :P if it's already a systemd enabled service, you can simple "sudo systemctl enable servicename"
[19:12] <ebarch> if it's just a script, you could put it into your crontab
[19:12] <Habbie> or make it a systemd service, of course
[19:12] <Habbie> but crontab is less work
[19:12] <ebarch> @reboot yourcommandhere
[19:12] <ebarch> yup
[19:13] <IwandeRerC> I did ebarch, but it would require some additional work to build a custom image. Anyway I agreed that might be the best shot for now.
[19:13] <Habbie> why would it need a custom image?
[19:13] <omgitsgela> Thanks. I'm pretty sure Tor is a systemd service, so that should work
[19:13] <Habbie> omgitsgela, probably, yes

[19:14] <omgitsgela> thank you kindly :)

[19:16] <ebarch> yea, berryboot does require a few extra steps if you don't already have a BB compatible image. at least in my experience, it was straightforward though (https://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot/adding_custom_distributions)

I built a 4 panel LED matrix display according to this guide on ADAFruit https://learn.adafruit.com/raspberry-pi-led-matrix-display/overview . everything is working, but i notice when i power all 4 panels and send video to it, I get the lightning bolt warning that means there isn't enough power. i am using the power supply suggested by
[20:32] <shodty> https://www.adafruit.com/product/658
[20:34] <shodty> i am curious what i might be doing wrong. i am running four 32x32 panels. also curious if I should be plugging the micro-usb power into the Pi on top of that power supply
[20:34] <shodty> err in addition to the power supply*

[22:11] <shbrngdo> the parts alone for RPi to have the equivalent functionality would be more than double and touch screen eats up your GPIO pins

[22:40] * Pagan (~Pagan@unaffiliated/pagan) has left #raspberrypi
[22:40] <shbrngdo> it's cheaper to buy a bluetooth for the "something" [or use wifi] than it is to get the parts to build a touch screen
[22:41] <shbrngdo> so let's say you write a 'web page application wrapper' as your droid application, then have it auto-start on boot, and it contacts (let's say) an RPi with a web server that controls GPIO pins and does the REAL work
[22:42] <shbrngdo> both the droid and RPi connect to wifi [maybe with RPi running as an access point?] and so your 'droid slab now uses the web interface [easy to implement on 'droid, just a few lines] and controls the RPi which controls the devices.
[22:43] <Habbie> shbrngdo, my nexus droid will not landscape on main screen
[22:43] <shbrngdo> alternately you can also use bluetooth with an Arduino [via serial bluetooth] but it takes more creative coding. I've done both types, and I prefer the web server version. Droid bluetooth is a bit tedious
[22:43] <shbrngdo> Habbie really? That kinda stinks.

[23:04] <shbrngdo> one of them came from something a dev said the other day, about how Linux does spidev as spidevN.M and so I proposed an actual change to do spigenN.M [in a similar way] since one of the devs liked the idea

[23:30] <shbrngdo> whereas spidevN.M has the '.M' that maps to the CS. So a user application can say "spidev0.0" and know it's CS=0 and spi device 0
[23:30] <shbrngdo> Habbie - the chip select i.e. the 'E#' pin. on RPi 2 and later you have a 3rd pin available on the 40 pin connector which is also GPIO16
[23:31] <shbrngdo> so really SPI should allow all 3 of them but I think only 2 are supported wiht the overlay, since RPi 1 uses GPIO16 for an LED
[23:31] <Habbie> ah
[23:31] <shbrngdo> maybe I'm wrong, I haven't looked at the overlays lately to make sure you can use E2 on the 40 pin connector
