[3:05] <binaryhermit> hmm, does the original pi throttle at all if they hit 80C?
[3:05] <binaryhermit> though that's probably extremely unlikely unless the ambient temperature is insane
[3:05] * binaryhermit is just curious
[3:07] <binaryhermit> I was watching a video a guy did about his 40 node raspberry pi cluster that was uploaded on February 11, 2014
[3:08] <binaryhermit> so that's got to be running a ARMv6 Pi
[3:08] * tdy (~tdy@unaffiliated/tdy) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:08] <binaryhermit> and it looked kinda... tightly packed, which got me wondering
[3:10] <binaryhermit> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipNDRFahG_0
[3:10] <binaryhermit> that video
[3:10] * cyphase (~cyphase@unaffiliated/cyphase) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[3:11] <mfa298> i think you'de struggle to get the bcm2835 that hot
[3:11] <binaryhermit> unless you had an extremely suboptimal thermal environment
[3:11] <mfa298> im not sure if the pi2 throttled either
[3:12] <binaryhermit> like, it was in the mid 90s F here this weekend and my air conditioning isn't worth running
[3:12] <binaryhermit> I managed to get my 3b+ idling at like 73C
[3:12] <binaryhermit> but that was in an official case with all panels on
[3:13] <binaryhermit> I took off the sides and top and it idled like 10C cooler
[3:13] <mfa298> 30c ambient isn't that high for electronics
[3:14] <binaryhermit> running super mario kart in lakka with the sides on and top on in a less suboptimal ambient environment caused thermal throttling
[3:14] <mfa298> for throttling it's more about the heat the SoC generates and how it can disapaite it
[3:14] <binaryhermit> which makes me wonder
[3:14] <binaryhermit> but a cooler ambient temperature helps somewhat, though
[3:15] <mfa298> the pi3 takes the clock speeds pretty close to the max, which means more heat generation
[3:16] <mfa298> the bcm2835 is only one core and running slower (default on the original pi was 700MHz) so a lot less scope for heat generation
[3:17] * cyphase (~cyphase@unaffiliated/cyphase) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:18] <binaryhermit> ok, I tested super mario kart for a bit while ssh-ed into my 3b+ running lakka with this script running https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1335110#p1335110 it seems to be running pretty much continuously at 1.4 ghz
[3:19] <binaryhermit> though that script uses perl which lakka doesn't have
[3:19] <binaryhermit> lakka is a stripped down retro gaming os
[3:19] <mfa298> the max power going into the original pi1 was 5W, and at maximum at least 1W of that was disapaited in the linear regulator. so under 4W could come from the SoC. on the 3B/3B+ the soc could be doing 6W (or possibly more) when driven hard
[3:21] <binaryhermit> yeah, with the case open and the suboptimal thermal environment, I think the pi was bouncing around 70C, only getting up to about 71
[3:21] <binaryhermit> that's when it throttles down to 1.2 ghz
[3:22] * Obi-Wan (~obi-wan@unaffiliated/obi-wan) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[3:23] <binaryhermit> that was running ff7 in its psx emulator
[3:23] <binaryhermit> pcsx-rearmed or something like that

[3:24] <binaryhermit> but that script, despite the error messages thrown from not having perl, seems to work fine

[14:41] <Project86__> I'm sure there's virtual ram, but doubt it's the same
[14:41] <Khaytsus> If you need more ram in a pi format... there are other options like banana pi
[14:42] <drzacek> but seriously, there is no way to add more ram, not sure if the ram is on the same chip as SoC, but even if it would be on different chip, it wouldn't be able to use different ram chip (not without some hardware changes in broadcom SoC?)
[14:42] <Project86__> Ah ok
[14:44] <drzacek> so your alternatives are: 1) accept the fact you have only so much RAM; 2) get other hardware; 3) rethink your system - if something you want to use needs too much ram, find some lightweight alternative or try to scrap resource from other applications (maybe drop GUI?)
[14:44] <Project86__> Was hoping there might be a way to add external ram (like a special module that'll allow you to attatch pc ram sticks
[14:45] <drzacek> this would require a fast bus to connect it, which you don't have.
[14:45] <pksato> Project86__: Its is possible, but, at very very low speed.
[14:46] <Project86__> pksato: alright thanks
[14:46] <drzacek> is there something specific you want to run on your PI, or you just ask in general?
[14:46] <Khaytsus> swap on a usb flash drive. that should be super fast.
[14:47] <drzacek> I guess a swap partition on a SD card would be faster
[14:47] <pksato> sata3 storage made with DDR2 ram http://www.hyperossystems.co.uk/07042003/hardware.htm
[14:47] <pksato> sata2
[14:48] <Project86__> drzacek: my pi is a mobile pentesting machine. More ram means quicker bruteforcing and such (on my own networks)
[14:48] <BurtyB> if only the pi had sata heh
[14:49] <drzacek> any way you can put second pi and offload some of the work there?
[14:50] <Khaytsus> You use a pi to brute force
[14:50] <Khaytsus> And ram is the issue
[14:50] * Khaytsus rolls eyes
[14:51] <Khaytsus> Why is it always the kali crowd that has these asinine questions
[14:51] <Project86__> Yes, that's what my initial plan was drzacek. But was curious to alternatives
[14:53] <Project86__> Khaytsus: actually, the pi rn, offloads to my laptop (12gb ram, 1 terabyte ssd) for the hard work like bruteforcing. I use the pi to gather the Intel.

[19:59] <shbrngdo> but building vlc on an RPi might be very, very, very, very time consuming. You could try the official bleeding edge vlc source and see what happens.
[20:00] <shbrngdo> I typically extract these into /usr/local/src/packagename (so it'd be 'vlc-something' probably, whatever's in the source tarball)

[20:13] <gordonDrogon> cyanide, if you're Arduino is a 3.3v device, then it's fine, else use the Pi's GPIO pin to drive an open collector output to the Arduino reset pin.
[20:13] <cyanide> ok
[20:13] <cyanide> the arduino is a 5v one.
[20:13] <gordonDrogon> ok, so use a transsitor.

First, I am trying to set up the tethering on my Raspi following http://teknosrc.com/raspberry-pi-usb-tethering-how-to-make-internet-work-in-raspberry-pi-by-usb-tethering/. The issue is, once I reboot with those settings in place, I cannot SSH into my Raspi from my Windows PC anymore (Raspi not recognized as host by
[20:26] <TheNik> Bonjour/PUTTy), and I can't tether it to my Android phone either, because my phone does not see a USB connection and the tethering option is disabled.

[22:04] <Lartza> EDinNY, Wait why are you on jessie?
[22:05] <EDinNY> Because I have not upgraded?
[22:05] <Lartza> But I mean
[22:05] <Lartza> I am not sure if jessie is updated anymore
[22:05] <larsks> ...maybe it's time to upgrade. Because I don't think those packages are getting fixed anymore.
[22:05] <EDinNY> ok...
[22:05] <Lartza> wheezy isn't for certain, not like Debian does
[22:05] <Lartza> even for security that is
[22:06] <Lartza> I can't see anything wrong with the init.d file, but I don't really know why you are getting that error either when running it
[22:07] <shauno> probably wanna take a peek in syslog
[22:07] <Lartza> Something crazy in /etc/default/dnsmasq?
[22:07] <EDinNY> syslog says nothing more interesting
[22:08] <EDinNY> going to upgrade...
[22:09] * borkr (~borkr@static130-244.mimer.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[22:09] <Lartza> It does seem to say jessie is defunct, so I would not expect it to be secure
[22:10] <Lartza> I need to get to bed, others are hopefully here to help you if anything comes up after the upgrade :) Feeling fairly under the weather :( Good luck!

[22:55] <bigpresh> I have a Pi (3B) which is booting into single-user mode, and I can't figure out why. Filesystem appears clean, it's mounted rw when it gets to single-user mode. Nothing in cmdline.txt suggests it should go runlevel 1 as far as I see.
