[5:10] <retroj> hello. I'm new to the pi, and I'm working with a Pi 3 and an Adafruit RGB Matrix+RTC HAT. The documentation for the HAT says this: "Unused GPIO pins include: RX, TX, 18, 24, 25, MOSI, MISO, SCLK, CE0, CE1, 19" I have also put a jumper from GPIO4 to GPIO18 in order to run the HAT in high quality mode. Does that mean that GPIO18 is now used and I could not use it for other things like a switch?

[6:33] <jmcgnh> retroj:--> all the pins that can be used for GPIO have GPIO designations or synonyms. If you jumper GPIO4 to BPIO18, that means both pins are used for that purpose and can't be used for simple switch control. If you need more switches, you should be able to find schemes for using SPI or other bus protocols to extend the set of switches with an ex
[6:33] <jmcgnh> ternal module or to use a matrix switch arrangment.

[9:32] <Shapeshifter> Oh and also: is it possible to repair a fried pi zero w? I think the main chip is fried. Or is that just not worth it given how cheap it is? Asking because it's sold out all the time...

[15:06] <gordonDrogon> I think CSI was a very quick add-on though.
[15:07] <gordonDrogon> t3chn0punk, interesting - my experiences of the wi-fi on the Pi 0 has been the opposite of yours - very stable.
[15:07] <gordonDrogon> however I've only deployed about a dozen of them though.
[15:08] <chris_99> don't spose anyone has managed to get wpa working with ad-hoc per chance?
[15:10] <gordonDrogon> never tried it.
[15:12] <chris_99> I get 'iface validation failed: err=-16' in dmesg. I set it up with wpa_supplicant. (followed the arch guide for the config details for it)

[15:49] <retroj> I am wiring up some Adafruit DotStar strip lights. I'm following this guide [1]. This shows the IC receiving its 5V from the external power supply. I wonder, can I supply 5V to the IC from the RPi instead, while still powering the led strip from the external power supply? I will have the led strip several feet away from the RPi so that would be more convenient.

[22:18] <davr0s> rpi/gps ... use USB dongle?
[22:18] <radisheater> whats the best way to display that?
[22:19] <davr0s> anyone have any experience of using one.. compatability?
[22:19] <chris_99> iptables -L should do it
[22:20] <radisheater> chris_99 hmm -L shows ALL/anywhere for FORWARD
[22:20] * dirtyroshi (~dirtyrosh@unaffiliated/dirtyroshi) has joined #raspberrypi

[22:23] <chris_99> did you set the forward thing in proc
[22:23] <chris_99> too
[22:23] <radisheater> yes
[22:24] <radisheater> ./etc/sysctl.conf
[22:24] <radisheater> and rebooted
[22:25] <chris_99> what happens if you ping 8.8.8.8, my iptables foo isn't the greatest, one sec

[22:27] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:27] <chris_99> from the pi i mean
[22:27] <radisheater> interesting
[22:27] <radisheater> I can _also_ ping it from internal nodes
[22:27] <chris_99> ok, just set /etc/resolv.conf up
[22:27] <chris_99> i guess
[22:28] <radisheater> so perhaps its just the DNS that's dead?
[22:28] <radisheater> resolv.conf on wifi/forwarding node?
[22:28] <radisheater> or internal nodes?
[22:28] <chris_99> internal
[22:29] <chris_99> i'm not sure what the best way to setup resolv.conf up is though, as it can get overwritten
[22:29] <radisheater> yea, mine is blank lel
[22:29] <chris_99> but yeah if you put something like 'nameserver 8.8.8.8'
[22:29] <chris_99> in it
[22:29] <radisheater> maybe I can just copy the working one from the other node
