[1:44] <zhdncpq> hi, i'm having a problem: netfilter-persistent not restoring iptables rules at boot. I spent some time debugging the init file for netfilter-persistent service, and it seems that `sudo service netfilter-persistent start` command is being intercepted by /lib/lsb/init_functions, and the result is empty output. Any alias for `start`, such as `reload`, works perfectly. Where should I continue digging?

[22:52] <zleap> so same way as you would if a switch is turned off
[22:52] <Toerkeium> any idea? I was thinking on connecting a wire to each end of, but I don't know how to detect if it's cut or not. Measuring ohms?
[22:52] <zleap> if pin low then send message
[22:52] <Toerkeium> zleap: but I should pass electricity to do that?
[22:53] <zleap> well the pi is low voltage anyway

[22:55] <zleap> https://gpiozero.readthedocs.io/en/stable/source_values.html?highlight=button
[22:56] <zleap> a button will essentally break or make the circuit
[22:56] <zleap> same way as cutting wire
[22:56] <zleap> only latter you need to then replace the wire,
[22:57] <zleap> https://gpiozero.readthedocs.io/en/stable/recipes.html may be more useful
[22:58] <Toerkeium> thanks zleap
[22:58] <zleap> np

[22:59] <zleap> button.when_pressed = say_hello
[22:59] <zleap> button.when_released = say_goodbye
[22:59] <zleap> y

[23:00] <zleap> sorry
[23:00] <zleap> i wassaying hi to Toadisattva

[23:00] <Toerkeium> yesterday we suffered a robbery at my house
[23:01] <zleap> ah
[23:01] <Toadisattva> oh that's no good
[23:01] <Toerkeium> so we put that wire, and I would like to know if someone cuts it
[23:01] <tobiasBora> methuzla: ok thank you. I'm trying some esoteric distribution so I guess that's the reason. Is there any list of blink pattern <-> corresponding error?
[23:01] <Toerkeium> I can setup my cell phone to ring when I receive an email, os something
[23:01] <zleap> if you put barbed wire up and someome gets hurt they are likely to sue you
[23:01] <zleap> unless you put warning signs up
[23:02] <Toerkeium> zleap: well.. it's on a place where they are making a building.. not sure how to say it in english
[23:02] <methuzla> tobiasBora, https://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Green_LED_blinks_in_a_specific_pattern
[23:02] <Toerkeium> in fact, they were forced to put the wire
[23:02] <zleap> construction site
[23:02] <methuzla> not sure how complete / up to date though
[23:02] <Toerkeium> heh that
[23:03] <Toerkeium> so for now it's empty, when they finish the building, w'll remove that wire
[23:03] <Toerkeium> but in the meantime.. I want to keep it
[23:03] <zleap> ok
[23:03] <methuzla> tobiasBora, just try latest raspbian lite to make sure your hw is ok
[23:03] <zleap> start simple with it
[23:04] <zleap> so if the wire is cut (use normal cheap wire to test) then light up an led, then sound a buzzer,
[23:04] <zleap> then work out how to send e-mail or other message, then integrate that code in to the main code
[23:04] <Toerkeium> yeah, I'll test like that
[23:04] <tobiasBora> methuzla: I managed to boot, thanks ;)
[23:05] <Toerkeium> I could even send a sms text or a whatsapp message
[23:05] <Toerkeium> that would be interesting
[23:05] <Toerkeium> but sending one mail is enough
[23:05] <zleap> i made a pir sensor circuit so it would monitor an area, and when someone comes near it lights up a 2nd led
[23:05] <zleap> the first led is for status, so that is blue, then if the pir detects something a red led lights up
[23:06] <Toerkeium> nice
[23:06] <zleap> only problem is that the pir takes time to reset
[23:06] <Toerkeium> I believe that with the button library is more than enough to accomplish this
[23:06] <zleap> yeah should be
[23:07] <Toerkeium> not sure how about the 3v or 5v goes over the wire, it's quite long
[23:07] <zleap> and you have plenty of pins
[23:07] <Toerkeium> it's about 25 metters
[23:07] <zleap> pin --> button --> ground like on diagram
[23:08] <zleap> well iirc barbed wire is a quite think comared to normal hook up wire, so in theory you may be ok
[23:08] <zleap> of course you need 50m of wire, 25 there and 25 back

[23:10] <Toerkeium> just like the led example
[23:11] <zleap> yeah
[23:11] <Toerkeium> but instead of a led, the barbed wire
[23:11] <zleap> well instead of button
[23:11] <zleap> maybe use a connector block to connect wires from pi to barbed wire
[23:12] <Toerkeium> oh you were talking voltage, yes... it will have to go 25 m and come back the same
[23:12] <zleap> yeah
[23:12] <Toerkeium> yes, to keep oxide out
[23:12] <zleap> well as long as it conducts it should work
[23:13] <Toerkeium> thanks a lot zleap .. it may looks like a stupid thing, but that will let me sleep better

[23:13] <Toerkeium> sure

[23:38] <erm3nda> zleap, if zerow wifi chip supports VLAN then itc an create many interfaces, virtually, with just 1 wifi device
[23:38] * camfl (~flyaway@135-23-103-117.cpe.pppoe.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:38] <erm3nda> even an android phone can do that
[23:38] <erm3nda> i don't expect less from zero2
[23:38] <erm3nda> zerow
[23:39] <erm3nda> but i just have rpi2b+ so i cant know
[23:39] <erm3nda> googling would solve
[23:39] <erm3nda> android -> routernet. its a powerfull app which needs root, but does what he says
[23:40] <erm3nda> basically, anything with many uses of the chip is using VLAN support. if your chip supports it, then you can do it.
[23:41] * akk (~akkana@75-161-36-163.albq.qwest.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[23:41] <{HD}> Vlan would be fancy. I just need the one network.
[23:42] <erm3nda> hostapd
[23:42] <erm3nda> create_ap is just a wrapper around it, for ease use
[23:43] * HighInBC (~highinbc@unaffiliated/chillum) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[23:43] <chris_99> when you say vlan, isn't that something above the wifi layery stuff, so would work with any chip? i could well be misunderstanding
[23:44] <{HD}> Yes. It’s taking one physical network and dividing into virtual networks.
[23:44] <erm3nda> chris_99, not all chips support all VLAN features, so, not all will run hostapd
[23:45] <chris_99> wait i'm probably thinking of something else, i thought vlan is just like a tunnel kind of thing? is it not
[23:45] <erm3nda> and yes, it's something virtual that chipset supports for you, splitting itself internally
[23:45] <erm3nda> chris_99, look for hostapd, it is the package that makes all that work
[23:46] <erm3nda> VLAN is the wifi chipset feature name
[23:46] * Toerkeium (be0237fa@gateway/web/freenode/ip.190.2.55.250) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[23:47] <chris_99> oh cheers, it's different to what i thouguht, with vlans can you have multiple essid's too?
[23:47] <erm3nda> yes
[23:47] <chris_99> ooh
[23:47] <chris_99> fancy
[23:47] <erm3nda> you can connect to one wifi, and be a host for other wifi, both from same wifi device
[23:48] <chris_99> and use different keys i guess?
[23:48] <erm3nda> totally different
[23:48] <erm3nda> it is virtualized at chip
[23:49] <chris_99> one thing i don't quite understand with PSK and WPA2, can other people see your packets
[23:49] <erm3nda> is like if you split chip work in 2 times. one per one activity, and one for the second
[23:49] <erm3nda> only if you have the decryption key
[23:49] <erm3nda> they can see your activity, but cannot see the content
[23:49] * immibis (~chatzilla@222-155-163-212-fibre.sparkbb.co.nz) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[23:50] <chris_99> sorry i mean, say i have two laptops using the same key
[23:50] <chris_99> can laptop2 see laptop1's packets
[23:50] <erm3nda> in theory NO, as you said wpa2
[23:51] <erm3nda> i am not wifi expert, but the key is used to cipher the connection, using some kind of salt
[23:51] * zleap (~psutton@torbaytechjam/zleap) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[23:51] <erm3nda> meaning, that the content from you and from other client is not exactly the same
[23:51] <chris_99> ah
[23:51] <erm3nda> the key is used to negotiate the connection, once is made, each client should be encrypted in a different way
[23:52] <erm3nda> but don't trust me, go to cryptographic channel for forum better
[23:52] <{HD}> Ok, so I will prob not be able to set this up from an existing ssh configuration. I prob need to direct connect a keyboard and monitor to setup as AP...
[23:52] <chris_99> ive been spending a while to get ad-hoc wifi to work with wpa, to no avail heh
[23:53] <erm3nda> {HD}, the main wifi connection will be still alive as far as i know, even if you fail to setup it
[23:54] <erm3nda> once you launch the hostapd, you'll be available to connect, if the hostapd doesnt work, it should remain
[23:54] * minionofgozer (~minionofg@136.62.5.236) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:54] <erm3nda> i don't know if rpi0w supports usb thethering
[23:55] <erm3nda> that will let you operate from network-usb instead of the wifi
[23:55] <{HD}> erm3nda: it does support usb tether but I don't want to have it physically connected
[23:56] <{HD}> how do I trun on the internal pullup? "gpio -g mode 24 input_up"?
[23:56] <erm3nda> {HD}, i mean to setup the hostapd if you fear about being disconnected
[23:57] <{HD}> lkooking at this guide: https://frillip.com/using-your-raspberry-pi-3-as-a-wifi-access-point-with-hostapd/
[23:58] <{HD}> looks like I will have to physically connect to set it up.
