[0:22] <retroj> hello. I'm making a HAT for my RPi3 that has both a level converter for a LED strip, as well as an MCP23017 i2c i/o expander. I'm using a stackable header because I'm going to stack another HAT on top of this one. I'm going to use the i/o expander for switches, and I wonder if anybody could advise on a good compact way to mount attachment points for the switches. Here is a photo of the layout as I have it now:
[0:23] <retroj> http://retroj.net/scratch/IMG_20180717_181320.jpg
[0:24] <Bitweasil> You going to get a PCB built? Just use surface mount switches.
[0:24] <retroj> The long chip is the i/o expander, and the right-most 8 pins on both edges are the i/o pins. I was thinking of using maybe a right-angle header along the bottom edge of the board to cover the 8 closer pins
[0:25] <retroj> the switches do need to be on wires.. they are in another enclosure
[0:26] <retroj> I'm just planning to use this PermaProto for this project. it's a one-of-a-kind project.
[0:28] <retroj> I also consider just soldering wires to the board, then putting JST connectors on the other end of the wires, so that I can easily attach and detach the switches.
[0:28] * Narrat (~Narrat@p5DED1656.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) Quit (Quit: They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.)
[0:29] <retroj> That seems like it could be fragile as it could put strain on the solder joints of those wires
[0:32] <retroj> I also don't necessarily need all 16 pins available for switches, but I'd like to plan on at least 9
[0:36] <retroj> maybe a pair of these along the lower edge - I would just remove the middle pin from the headers: https://www.adafruit.com/product/816

[1:01] <CaptainBlackton> Hi All, I'm trying to set up some dependencies on a Pi Zero w for setting up an IDE there (to eventually make some instructional YouTube videos for kids to follow). When I do "sudo apt install" for those dependencies, it keeps saying things like "no installation candidate." I think a lot of these are kind of basic things, at least for regular Ubuntu, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
[1:02] * sdothum_ (~znc@108.63.139.127) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:02] <CaptainBlackton> In any case, these are the dependencies that I was having problems with: libffi-dev, libfontconfig1-dev, libgif-dev, libjpeg-dev, libncurses5-dev, libsqlite3-dev, libx11-dev, libxext-dev, libxrender-dev, upx-uc
[1:02] * Warmy (~Warmy@185.206.224.115) Quit (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
[1:02] <CaptainBlackton> Is some repository needed for these kinds of things from within Raspbian?
[1:03] * zlogan2003 (~zlogan@x4e302b45.dyn.telefonica.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:03] <CaptainBlackton> BTW, I already did "sudo apr update" before trying to install those dependencies

[1:06] <retroj> CaptainBlackton: you want apt-get or aptitude, not apt
[1:07] <retroj> CaptainBlackton: most instructions use apt-get. aptitude is another package interface to the apt system with a bit more of a sophisticated dependency solver than apt-get. it has a different syntax too, so be sure to read the man pages.

[4:48] <CaptainBlackton> <retroj>, thanks for the response! I will still try that, as I haven't found anything else so far! So you agree that I theoretically *shouldn't* be getting these errors though?
[4:49] <CaptainBlackton> I have traditionally used apt-get actually, but recently have seen a lot of posting with apt instead, but I didn't think of that possibly being an issue here.
[4:50] <CaptainBlackton> hmm, actually I get the same set of errors using apt-get, so I guess that wasn't it...

[5:08] <CaptainBlackton> Well, you actually may have been onto something. I did a (non-Raspbian) search about these errors, and the only results that seemed possibly relevant had to do with repositories. So I found the repositories folder, and sure enough, it had the "apt-get" source commented out by default, with instructions to comment it back in if you want it. So I used "sudo nano" to edit the file as root user (the only allowed
[5:08] <CaptainBlackton> user), and now it's installing all those dependencies!

[9:15] <juril> Hi.. I'm getting "mmal: mmal_vc_component_enable: failed to enable component: ENOSPC" while doing "raspistill -o image.jpg" (RB-Pi3 B+ Pi NoIR v2).. I think I tried all the possible fixes I foung online.. is replacing the camera itself the only way out? :-(
[9:16] <mfa298> check all the connections then double check them
[9:17] <mfa298> also check you enabled the camera in raspi-config
[9:17] <juril> mfa298: I did it several times
[9:17] <juril> mfa298: sure.. I also increased gpu_mem param
[9:18] <mfa298> there used to be a case of the connector on the camera board coming loose which could cause issues. although its been years since i used a pi cam so i dont know if things have changed

[16:04] <SomeBloke> I've heard that PyLoad is good but it relies on a GUI
[16:05] <Lartza> SomeBloke, like... youtube-dl?
[16:05] <Lartza> I am not 100% sure what pyload does
[16:06] <Lartza> also https://github.com/pyload/pyload/wiki/Step-by-Step-Installation-(Linux)#using-command-line-pyload
[16:06] <BCMM> i looked it up but i'm too delighted with the web design of https://pyload.net/ to actually read it
[16:06] <BCMM> it's really relaxing
[16:07] <BCMM> SomeBloke: seriously though, what sort of features are you looking for? i'm assuming you want something beyond wget?
[16:08] <SomeBloke> wait wget is exactly what i'm looking for
[16:08] <SomeBloke> thanks :)
[16:08] <stevest> Yeah, I'm struggling to understand what a "remote download center" is and why it's useful. But interested, nonetheless.
[16:08] <BCMM> SomeBloke: if at some point you need all the bells and whistles and specific website workarounds of pyload, it might still be worth looking at, since it seems to have a command line interface
[16:08] <stevest> SomeBloke: Wait, are you serious, re: wget? heh
[16:09] <Shapeshifter> Can I use this to power a pi zero w? https://www.meanwell-web.com/en-gb/ac-dc-single-output-encapsulated-power-supply-irm--05--5 I'm asking because I did, and it worked, but then I fried the pi and I'm wondering if it was because of the PSU or because I was messing around with the GPIO pins.
[16:09] <BCMM> SomeBloke: btw if you're doing a long download and don't want it to stop if you lose your ssh connection, look in to tmux
[16:09] <Shapeshifter> I soldered a micro-USB wire to the PSU to connect it btw.
[16:09] <BCMM> (which lets you disconnect from a terminal session and come back later)
[16:09] <Lartza> Shapeshifter, Why didn't you connect the PSU to GPIO?
[16:10] <SomeBloke> well, I have two homes, one with terrible internet, one with great internet, and since I don't have a computer at my good place at all times, i thought of setting up some kind of NAS with a RasPi there so that I can download remotely, and also retrieve files from there using SFTP since
[16:10] <Lartza> Not that it makes a difference really just, saves a microusb connector :P
[16:10] <stevest> BCMM: curl -L -O -C - will also allow you to resume.
[16:10] <SomeBloke> GitHub direct downloads are insanely unstable when there's low bandwidth
[16:10] <stevest> BCMM: Which solves another problem.. I misread what you said. Nevermind. :)
[16:11] <Shapeshifter> Lartza: yeah, well I had one lying around so using it was fine by me.
[16:11] <stevest> SomeBloke: Understood. I love edgecases liek this and the workarounds peopel create heh.

[16:22] <Shapeshifter> I'm also still wondering about my setup: I want to control a large-ish LED installation. I'm powering the strip using a different PSU. So I have a wire going from GPIO 10, 12 or 21 (depending on whether I use SMI, PWM or PCM) to a level shifter, this one https://www.adafruit.com/product/1787 ) and the level shifter is powered by the same PSU as the LEDs and finally there's a wire from the level
[16:22] <Shapeshifter> shifter to the 5V led strip. I fried my pi when I moved the cable between the level shifter and pi from one GPIO pin to another.
[16:23] <Shapeshifter> basically this https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/019/658/large1024/leds_levelshifter_bb.png?1410393346 but using a separate PSU for the PI (the other one powering the strip and level shifter) and using a differen GPIO pin.

[19:29] <takane2> Anyone ever setup their pi for remote access when it is connected to the internet with a cellular modem? I'm trying just dynamic DNS, but there seem to be issues with NAT or a firewall blocking connections to it.
[19:30] <chris_99> mobile networks
[19:30] <chris_99> often nat it

[20:37] <Habbie> as i read it soupladler just wants tty1 or similar on the SPI
[20:39] <pwillard> It has to be said... get your arduino... attach to the Serial console port... attach the display to the SPI pins on Arduino... write some quick code... call it done.
[20:39] <Habbie> that's a bit.. indirect :)

[20:41] <pwillard> you are just making a Serial to SPI adapter. Any other ways has to redirect and swallow console data...and that means you WILL miss boot up messages until you can get that process to run. (granted, that's not a big issue)
[20:42] <Habbie> bootup messages are a fair point, i agree
[20:43] <pwillard> I'm no expert though.. maybe there is a magical way. Or, Soupladler could just buy the official 7" display. ;-P
