[0:30] <prototron> Hello. I have a problem with the order of audio devices (using ALSA on Raspbian Stretch). I have a IQAudio DAC and two other small USB sound cards. The order isn't always the same when booting the Raspberry Pi. So the IQAudio DAC sometimes is #2, sometimes #1, etc... How can I force a certain order and keep it?
[0:31] <prototron> I am aware of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf but I had to create it myself and it doesn't change anything
[0:32] <prototron> I also tried in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf, but it doesn't make any difference
[0:33] <prototron> oh wait!
[0:35] <prototron> I had to ask to resolve the problem... I had to modify /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf and use 'snd_usb_audio' instead of 'snd-usb-audio'

[11:39] <Riiiis> is there any special options needed for the formatting?

[11:43] <gordonDrogon> not sure Linux can boot off fat - try ext4.
[11:44] <shiftplusone> depends on what that contents is, I guess.
[11:45] <Riiiis> i'm pretty sure it's similar to the regular rpi, and there it's just a fat(something) partition with the correct files in it

[11:46] <Riiiis> i just have 20 compute modules and one working, that i want to duplicate
[11:47] <shiftplusone> I'd suggest making sure everything works as expected first and then figuring out why your special case isn't working. It's not enough to copy the boot files only.
[11:47] <shiftplusone> There are other partitions on there that windows refuses to acknowledge
[11:47] <Riiiis> ok
[11:48] <Riiiis> good to know
[11:48] <shiftplusone> you can use win32diskimager to read the image off the first CM
[11:48] <shiftplusone> and then write than image onto the second CM

[12:36] <mfa298> for raspbian there are two kernels (and sets of modules) but they're both on the SD card - so the image should work on any pi.
[12:36] <ShorTie> pi 2 still needs a sdcard to boot
[12:36] <jancoow> yeah all my network boots have sd card with points to a nfs share

[12:48] <jancoow> both kernels are on the boot partition
[12:48] <mfa298> nfs permissions or speed/duplex mismatch perhaps - those are a couple of things I've seen give odd results on network boot.

[12:49] <jancoow> mm that could be something
[12:50] <mfa298> I think I had some issues a bit like that when I had an nfs share that was rw for the network but only root access for the pi hostname and the pi wasn't using the right hostname at the time - so it could see the fs but not write to it as root

[18:05] <gordonDrogon> if you just want to wait on a button, you can do it in a shell script too - I've noticed a lot of simple python programs can be translated into shell - often more efficiently :-|

[18:08] <mfa298> chris_99: the userland interrupts aren't the same as you might get on a microcontroller in terms of how they work at a low level which is why there can be latency
[18:08] <chris_99> Ahhh
[18:09] <chris_99> I'll have to read how they're implemented
[18:09] <mfa298> the usual principe is a blocking read on one of the gpio files under /sys (or was it /proc)
[18:09] <gordonDrogon> that ^
[18:10] <chris_99> Interesting
[18:10] <gordonDrogon> so you have the kernel take the real hardware interrupt, then schedule the process to wake-up, then when it comes round on the run-queue, it wakes it up ...
[18:10] <mfa298> aiui if you want something more like a microcontroller you probably have to delve into kernel modules and then have some interface to that to get data in/out

[18:11] <gordonDrogon> neither does putting the process into a rt/round robbin scheduller.
[18:11] <gordonDrogon> the kernel still has to process it and wake it up - and from what I gather, half the code goes via the virtual file system, just adding to the time.
[18:12] <chris_99> I guess I'll look at the driver for curiosity
[18:12] * break19 (~break19@unaffiliated/break19) has joined #raspberrypi
[18:12] <gordonDrogon> if you needed it "better" in user-land, I think that locking the thread to a single CPU and polling might be better.
[18:12] <gordonDrogon> but I've never looked into that.
[18:12] <mfa298> if you're doing it from something like python/ruby/node it's probably even worse than the ~150µS. I did something reading wiegand data on two gpio pins a few years ago and that sometimes couldn't read things fast enough (that was in ruby).
[18:13] * FireHopper (~fireh@24.115.112.187.res-cmts.flt.ptd.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[18:13] <mfa298> at that point a different scheduler helped but that was probably more about ruby (same would likely apply on python/node etc) and being on a single core pi.
