[0:13] <mindofmateo> I'm having trouble setting up Wifi on my Raspberry Pi 2. From reading on the Pi forums, I saw a guy with the username MrEngman created an installer script for the rtl8812au drivers for my Wifi dongle, and it is located here: http://fars-robotics.net/install-wifi I downloaded and installed that, then rebooted. [15:12] <geosmin> i'm in a little over my head. trying to set up communication between a pi and a piece of industrial equipment over a serial connection through GPIO
[15:13] <larsks> geosmin: how's that going?
[15:13] <geosmin> conected through an RS232 adapter
[15:14] <geosmin> larsks: i only got so far as connecting everything up, just unsure where to start
[15:14] <BurtyB> how is the rs232 adapter connected?
[15:14] <BurtyB> doh you said gpio
[15:14] <larsks> geosmin: can you provide more details about where you're stuck?
[15:16] <geosmin> larsks: not so much stuck as unclear as to what the right first steps are here
[15:16] <geosmin> ie. what python module to use
[15:16] <larsks> I'm not sure how to help you. What exactly do you want to do?
[15:17] * akk (~akk@97-123-90-36.albq.qwest.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:17] <larsks> There's a `pyserial` module for interacting with serial devices (https://pypi.org/project/pyserial/)
[15:17] <geosmin> any suggestions on pins for Tx and Rx? though i asusme it doesn't really matter
[15:17] <artok> do you have logic level converter or both work on 3,3v ?
[15:18] <artok> suggestion is: use tx and rx pins =D
[15:18] * Syliss (~Hobomobo@asa1.digitalpath.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:18] <artok> and rpi tx -> other rx, and vice versa
[15:18] <geosmin> artok: those are still configured for serial console access
[15:18] <geosmin> thought it might be easier to avoid editing a few config files and just use a couple others
[15:20] <larsks> It's probably going to be easier to use the pi serial port. There are guides on raspberrypi.org that should walk you through settings thing up so that you can use the serial port for something other than the system console.
[15:20] <geosmin> yeah reading into that now, you're right
[15:21] <BurtyB> geosmin, if you're using raspbian you'll need to enable the serial port and then disable the login with "sudo raspi-config" (and depending on which Pi you have and what's on the other end you may want to switch to the better serial port (if using a pi3)
[15:22] * resi (~resi@unaffiliated/resi) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:23] <geosmin> would raspbian be good to use? i just threw arch arm on there and thought i'd take an additive approach
[15:23] <BurtyB> geosmin, and if whatever you're plugging in sends more than 8 ot 16 bytes at a time (depending on which serial hardware you're using) you'll need to wire up the hardware flow control or ensure the Pi is never busy otherwise it will drop bytes
[15:23] <larsks> geosmin: you will generally find that much of the documentation is written specifically with raspbian in mind.

[15:25] <gordonDrogon> personally, I'd use a USB serial adapter. you can get these in 5v and "proper" +/- 15v rs232 variants. easiest way to connect Pi to industrial system that's expecting real rs232.
[15:26] <geosmin> gordonDrogon: oh that sounds a bi more forgiving

[15:29] <BurtyB> with the all important db25 adapter :D
[15:29] <geosmin> gordonDrogon: is there a microcontroller in there?
[15:30] <gordonDrogon> in the usb adapter? not as such - it's a custom chip that takes usb on one side and gives you serial on the other. it could be, but who knows. it's just a "black box" as far as Linux (and me) is concerned.
[15:30] <geosmin> you know, i /do/ have a USB-TTL adapter
[15:30] <gordonDrogon> I have 3 of them in a Pi right now taking to old computers.
[15:31] <geosmin> i wonder if jerry-rigging that to the rs232 adapter would be pretty much the same hardware
[15:31] <gordonDrogon> the 4th usb socket is a user to ttl serial adapter that I use for the pdp-8.
[15:31] * pavlushka (~pavlushka@ubuntu/member/pavlushka) has joined #raspberrypi

[15:36] <gordonDrogon> the Pi's on-board serial is somewhat limited - buffer overruns, data drops on higher speed constant streaming data from what I gather. there was also much confision when when Piv3 came out regarding device names, etc., so I just stopped using it because the usb ones "just work"
[15:38] <gordonDrogon> I never had issues with the on-board serial in the early days though and used it for stuff like on-top Arduino boards and so on - things seem to have changed a little since the Pi3 though due to the serial ports being swapped (Pi has 2) so it's a different internal hardware driver.

[15:51] <geosmin> the idea to be to scan a code which cobtaiins a string, the pi would then query a database for that string and get info from the relevant row
[15:51] <geosmin> afaik these usb scanners basically pretend to be a keyboard
[15:52] <Rickta59> some are serial ..
