[13:47] <DanielTheFox> hmm
[13:47] <DanielTheFox> if my RPi emits much less heat due to extreme underclocking, does this also mean it'll save power?

[13:48] <DanielTheFox> well
[13:48] <DanielTheFox> I though the electromagic was the one that used the energy
[13:49] <zap0> it's stored in the flux capacitor
[13:49] <DanielTheFox> but oh well, /dev/null converts bits into heat

[13:53] <DanielTheFox> hmm
[13:54] <DanielTheFox> who plays the MP3 streams in the RPi? CPU or GPU?
[13:54] <DanielTheFox> (no matter how much I underclock the CPU, the computer remains able to decode MP3 realtime for playing music)
[13:55] <Habbie> mp3 playing is a very light task for a modern CPU
[13:55] <DanielTheFox> (however, if I put the GPU below 50 MHz, it starts doing weird things with the audio, although I'll blame at the PWM instead)
[13:56] <DanielTheFox> is the videocore actually handling audio?
[13:56] <DanielTheFox> the GPU handles a lot of things

[14:00] <DanielTheFox> SD cards FTW
[14:00] <DanielTheFox> piesquared: go all the way for the SD

[14:01] <piesquared> hm. and any waynto up the RAM?
[14:01] <DanielTheFox> a USB SSD may have troubles regarding power consumption and compatibility with Pi firmware's almost-universal USB driver
[14:02] <DanielTheFox> piesquared: as in increasing RAM?
[14:02] <DanielTheFox> for physical RAM, 1 GB is currently the best this SoC can do

[14:03] <DanielTheFox> but you can add swap memory
[14:03] <DanielTheFox> however, swap files/partitions can trash out your SD card faster (depending on how old it already is)
[14:03] <DanielTheFox> this is what has been killing my SD cards, hence why I don't have any anymore
[14:03] <DanielTheFox> I should get one and use it wisely
[14:04] <piesquared> I was hoping to be able to leave a video game i play on 24/7 so stuff will load, but the cpu is like at 50-70%
[14:04] * Senicar (~Senicar@gateway/tor-sasl/senicar) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[14:06] <DanielTheFox> haven't tried so, VLC is the compatible one with keyboard buttons
[14:07] <DanielTheFox> maybe it is compatible with bluetooth headset buttons too, you stand a chance there
[14:07] <DanielTheFox> needless to say, mplayer is not compatible with my special multimedia keyboard buttons

[16:38] <captain118> Does anyone have a problem with the picamera hanging?
[16:41] <captain118> I've been using my Rpi and Picamera for a photobooth. Lately whenever I run my python app the python library hangs with no errors when running the capture function on the 9th image. 1-8 works fine but when I go to take the 9th it hangs.
[16:42] <captain118> thoughts?
[16:43] <Syliss> yay picked up a 3 b+. only $30 at frys
[16:43] <lopta> Syliss: Bargain!
[16:44] <Syliss> yeah lopta, i used to have 2 3b's, 2 0's, and a first 10k release board. so im starting over
[16:45] <waveform> captain118, when you say "hangs" - how long have you waited for it? There's an overall timeout of 60 seconds on image captures (for various reasons) so my guess would be it hasn't "hung" but the firmware's not indicating end-of-frame for some reason
[16:47] * tavish (~tavish@unaffiliated/tavish) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[16:47] <lopta> I have a 2B and a couple of 1Bs. Tried the 2B last night but it didn't work
[16:47] <captain118> waveform: I havent timed it but I'll do that now
[16:47] <lopta> The 1B works though!
[16:48] <waveform> captain118, the other possibility is if your photo-booth software is forking / using multiprocessing for some reason (https://picamera.readthedocs.io/en/release-1.13/faq.html#camera-locks-up-with-multiprocessing)
[16:48] <captain118> waveform: it just sits there showing the preview

[16:50] <waveform> captain118, when you say "showing the preview" do you mean the camera's preview overlay, and is the preview still "moving" (i.e. not frozen on a single frame)
[16:51] <captain118> waveform: correct
[16:51] <captain118> waveform: and yes it is still moving
[16:51] <waveform> captain118, okay - if the preview's still moving then the firmware's still operating to some degree (i.e. we're not dealing with a firmware crash)
[16:51] <captain118> waveform: I just past 60 seconds and its still showing the preview
[16:52] <captain118> waveform: the file gets created but it has a size of 0
[16:53] <waveform> captain118, sounds like it's initiated the capture but hasn't received any data from the firmware (but the firmware's still running more or less happily)
[16:53] <waveform> captain118, do you know if your application is using forking / multiprocessing at all?
[16:54] <waveform> (it might not be obvious if you're building on top of other things like flask, e.g. if it's web-based)

[16:56] * dskull (~dskull@unaffiliated/daynaskully) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:57] <captain118> waveform: it still hangs in python2
[16:58] <captain118> waveform: it does not seem to be a problem in raspistill
[17:00] <ali1234> BurtyB: i was plugging and unplugging my 3a+ on usb and one time it came up in usb bootloader mode
[17:00] <ali1234> so not only did they mess up the firmware, also the pin is floating
[17:01] <BurtyB> ali1234, :) and :(
[17:01] <waveform> captain118, there shouldn't be any difference between the lib in py2 and 3 (same code, and all it does is basically poke the MMAL layer); raspistill will be rather different depending on how you're using it
[17:02] <waveform> e.g. if you're calling it repeatedly then you're effectively re-initializing the camera firmware before each capture
[17:02] <ali1234> BurtyB: i've been thinking about reverse engineering bootcode.bin to the point where the boot mode can be selected from a gpio
[17:02] <BurtyB> ali1234, I might set one up power cycling and see if I get the same
[17:03] * graphene (~graphene@46.101.134.251) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[17:03] <ali1234> so far i've at the point where i can slice up the bootcode and insert some code that makes it patch itself

[17:04] <ali1234> basically replace the first instruction with a jump to the end where i can put arbitrary code, then it copies the original first instruction back, does whatever, and then jumps back to the entry point
[17:04] <ali1234> the code to read gpios it out there, so it would just be necessary to find where the decision on boot mode is made and patch that
[17:05] <ali1234> it may be necessary to jump back into the on board bootrom
[17:05] <ali1234> but i dont think so since they are almost identical
[17:05] <lopta> Does the 1B use different cameras to the other Raspberry Pi boards?
[17:05] <ali1234> i bet all the code is in there still
[17:05] <ali1234> lopta: no
[17:05] <BurtyB> ali1234, cool :) - I just ordered a load of small SD cards and cried a little heh
[17:06] <ali1234> is there a usb booting bootcode.bin available?
[17:06] <BurtyB> ali1234, I don't remember seeing one

[17:06] <ali1234> i have no interest in usb booting in "production" mode - i just want it for quicker development
[17:07] <ali1234> so booting from sd card is fine as long as it then requests firmware on usb
[17:07] <ali1234> although tbh the usb booting is broken anyway
[17:07] <ali1234> still doesn't allow initrd bigger than 32MB for no obvious reason
[17:07] <ali1234> maybe it would be better to try to find a usb ethernet cable that the pi thinks is the onboard one
[17:07] <waveform> lopta, no - same camera on all boards
[17:08] <lopta> Thanks ali1234 and waveform

[17:15] <ali1234> that's a bit incomplete... somewhere i have a version that copies the head back to 0x200 and jumps to it
[17:17] <ali1234> even on the CM3 the method to force usb boot mode is laughable
[17:17] <ali1234> the eMMC command line is put through the digital switch controlled by a jumper
[17:18] <ali1234> so it relies on the firmware failing to see any eMMC connected and falling back to usb mode

[19:54] <Bitweasil> I will say, a .onion address is a nice way to access a server as well. Latency sucks, but you can get to it from most places if you have a local Tor client.
[19:55] <Bitweasil> Or just have your box maintain a reverse tunnel to a cheap cloud instance, and SSH to that.
