[2:04] <Elspuddy> hello, just a quick question, what usb3 to sata adapters do work with the raspberry pi 3 ? im just asking becaues i got 5 of them from amazon and it boot fine, but if i reboot it just stops booting till i take the power cord out
[2:05] <friendofafriend> So, you've got a USB to SATA adapter. And you've attached a SATA drive.
[2:05] <friendofafriend> Are you powering this hard drive from the adapter?
[2:05] <Elspuddy> yes, a kingston a400 120 gig
[2:06] <Elspuddy> it's an ssd
[2:07] <friendofafriend> Try providing power to the USB SATA adapter with a split power-data cable.
[2:08] * seriema (~seriema@h-41-178.A904.priv.bahnhof.se) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[2:08] <Elspuddy> ahh, it's a single usb cable
[2:08] * RebelCoder (~RebelCode@82.129.62.209) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[2:10] <friendofafriend> It sounds like a power problem. I'd first make sure the Pi is being powered from an adequate power supply, and then maybe try a cable like this one. https://www.amazon.com/HIGHROCK-Enhancer-Female-Charge-Extension/dp/B00NIGO4NM
[2:11] * tdy (~tdy@unaffiliated/tdy) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:12] <Khaytsus> POWER ENHANCAR!
[2:12] <Khaytsus> Um.. Y OTG cable.
[2:12] <Khaytsus> Oh, it's not even a otg. What the heck is this for
[2:13] <Elspuddy> im power them ( i got more then one all doing seti) with one of thses https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PK1IIJY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
[2:13] <Khaytsus> Elspuddy: You fail
[2:13] <friendofafriend> Khaytsus: The USB A plug with the red band is just for power.
[2:13] <Khaytsus> Those are great for phones, not for Pi's
[2:13] <Khaytsus> friendofafriend: most rediculous cable I've ever seen
[2:14] <Elspuddy> Khaytsus : o.k what would you recomend for powering some pi's ?
[2:14] * r3dd0g (~r3dd0g@unaffiliated/r3dd0g) Quit (Quit: Going offline, see ya! (www.adiirc.com))
[2:14] <Khaytsus> Elspuddy: The recommended power supply
[2:15] * sir_guy_carleton (~username@198.13.238.24) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[2:15] <friendofafriend> Oh Khaytsus, you big silly. It's for devices that draw more power than a USB port can provide.
[2:15] * Tobbi (~Tobbi@supertux/tobbi) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:15] <friendofafriend> Or rather, *is* providing, for whatever reason.
[2:15] <DanielTheFox> friendofafriend: I need one of those
[2:15] <DanielTheFox> :P
[2:16] <DanielTheFox> no matter if Khaytsus says it's ridiculous
[2:17] <Khaytsus> DanielTheFox: Plug it into itself for endless power
[2:17] <DanielTheFox> no
[2:17] <DanielTheFox> :P
[2:18] <friendofafriend> They're awfully handy cables! Usually used for mechanical HDDs.
[2:18] <DanielTheFox> luckily, I love mechanical hard disk drives
[2:18] <DanielTheFox> even if people say they're noisy and unreliable
[2:18] * Sonar_Guy (~Who@fedora/sonarguy) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:19] <DanielTheFox> I like having low-cost storage
[2:19] <friendofafriend> When people complain about the Pi not powering their spinning disks, I wish more people knew about those split power-data cables.
[2:20] <Khaytsus> Spinning rust is fine for mass storage
[2:20] <Khaytsus> friendofafriend: Or a powered USB hub
[2:21] <friendofafriend> Khaytsus: You might still run into the 500mA limit on those spinning rust drives.
[2:23] * Syliss (~Syliss@73.90.209.42) Quit (Quit: Syliss)
[2:23] <Elspuddy> i know i did when i tryed 2 2.5" drives, il admit they are old 80 gig drives, one requiers 750ma
[2:23] <DanielTheFox> it's amazing how that spinning rust stores lots of data
[2:24] <DanielTheFox> at a fairly low cost
[2:24] <Khaytsus> Again, they're fine for mass storage
[2:24] <DanielTheFox> the "low cost" part is important in the sense I barely have enough money to buy the Pi itself
[2:25] <DanielTheFox> and a nice SSD has more than what I need, yet not enough of what I need: storage
[2:25] <DanielTheFox> if cloud was cheaper...
[2:25] <DanielTheFox> and if my upload speed was faster...
