[5:51] <getrat> I have a Raspberry Pi bought in 2014. I need to run PHP (on the command line) and PostgreSQL. Nothing else besides whatever dependencies those two might have to run normally. I have a deep-seated hate for insane Code of Conducts (so Linux and FreeBSD are both unthinkable) as well for having to "babysit" the machine in any way, such as manually applying system and software patches/updates. Is there anything I can do that will let me not have to spend
[5:51] <getrat> all my time worrying about it becoming outdated and vulnerable, and actually just... run those basic things (with very little load)? I have used both FreeBSD and Linux in the past and even before the Code of Conduct madness, I found them both to be a total PITA to set up, maintain, get support for and just... use in general. There has got to be some sort of non-Unix-based, yet still free of charge and mature & secure, OS by now?

[14:38] <gordonDrogon> I've no idea about a kernel module for the 6050 but I know many people have written code to use it (mostly because they've emailed me asking for help with the I2C side). Not sure I'd class I2C as an "industrial IO interface" though.
[14:38] <gordonDrogon> however if there is a kernel module that hides all the I2C from you, then use it if you can ...

[14:42] <cetchmoh> gordonDrogon: exactly this kernel module is what I'm trying to figure out. There seems to be no documentation whatsoever besides the module code
[14:42] <cetchmoh> gordonDrogon: I already used userspace i2c libraries to communicate with this sensor
[14:43] <gordonDrogon> I'd stick with the userspace stuff then - if it works ...
[14:45] <cetchmoh> yep - well... I just wanted to see if there is any advantage to using the module. The IIO interface provides shared memory ring buffers, and all the bells and whistles for high frequency streaming

[22:20] <Encrypt> Hello everyone!
[22:20] <lopta> Hello Encrypt!
[22:20] <Encrypt> I'm interested in buying a Pi 3B+ to install Kodi (LibreElec) on it
[22:20] <Encrypt> I'd also buy a TV Hat
[22:20] <lopta> Encrypt: I would like one of those too.
[22:21] <lopta> The 3B+. Not sure what a TV Hat is.
[22:21] <chris_99> hodapp: what are you making out of interest, wrt the demosaicing stuff
[22:21] <Encrypt> However, it seems Kodi will make the CPU hot and with the TV Hat, the air can't flow as easily as without it
[22:21] <friendofafriend> lopta: It's a DVB-T2 tuner.
[22:21] <Encrypt> Has any of you experienced any issue with this kind of setup?
[22:22] <hodapp> chris_99: rig for capturing a lot of images at once to create composite images
[22:22] <lopta> Encrypt: Could you use an extender to put the TV hat higher up?
[22:22] <lopta> ...allowing for more airflow between the two boards?
[22:22] <Encrypt> lopta, https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-tv-hat/
[22:22] <chris_99> hodapp: ooh cool, for images you stitch together you mean?
[22:22] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@cpe-75-187-160-45.neo.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: (Read error: Connection reset by beer))
[22:22] <lopta> Encrypt: I wonder whether there's an ATSC equivalent.
[22:22] <Encrypt> lopta, I believe that can be an option yeah
[22:23] <Encrypt> I considered the same thing yesterday
[22:23] <hodapp> now, I can capture a bunch of raw images, dump them to disk along with information to track them back to position later, and demosaic them whenever (and do other processing)... but I'm trying to see if there is some way that I could do some processing on the Pi if it will save me a bunch of I/O that I don't get much out of
[22:23] <lopta> I'd not considered the Pi as a DVR.
[22:23] <waveform> Encrypt, kodi won't get the CPU hot - or not so hot as will cause any issues
[22:24] <lopta> hodapp: It would be nice if the GPU could help with that.
[22:24] <hodapp> if I have images in memory in uncompressed form, there are certain things I can do fairly quickly, like averaging and even some rudimentary exposure fusion - and perhaps end up with the result being even faster because it has crunched a whole collection of images down to one before needing to hit disk
[22:24] <chris_99> ah gotcha, you're capturing the raw data then, rather than jpeg right
[22:25] <hodapp> welllll, it's a JPEG that contains raw data
[22:25] <friendofafriend> lopta: There is not, at least not yet. You're stuck with a USB tuner for now.
[22:25] <chris_99> oh
[22:25] <hodapp> as... stuff in addition to the actual lossy JPEG image
[22:25] <chris_99> mm

[22:25] <hodapp> that's straight off the sensor, no processing at all, 10-bit raw
[22:25] <hodapp> dcraw can handle it
[22:25] <lopta> friendofafriend: Oh well. :-)
[22:25] <chris_99> are you using the latest pi cameras or.. ? i think they're 8MP right?
[22:26] <waveform> hodapp, you're using raw capture from the pi's camera module I assume?
[22:26] <hodapp> I'm using some Arducam sensors from a year or two ago, and those are 5 MP
[22:26] <waveform> (given it's 10-bit and the raw stuff's tagged on a jpeg :)
[22:26] <hodapp> there may be 8 MP ones now with C/CS mount but I've not looked
[22:26] <hodapp> waveform: yes
[22:26] <hodapp> waveform: aren't you picamera guy? :P
[22:27] <friendofafriend> lopta: I think it's neat for when all you want your Pi to do is handle a tuner. Rotten to lose all the pins in the process!
[22:27] <waveform> yup, that's me - though I confess I haven't had the time to do much on it recently (still working on the 1.14 release)
[22:28] <hodapp> waveform: ahh... I just filed a github issue over something quizzical I'm seeing (if I do RGB, at 2592x1944, through the video port, I get an all-black image - but if I change any of those 3 things, it's not an issue)
[22:28] <hodapp> and it might just be a hardware limitation but I'd like to at least understand it
[22:28] <lopta> I was wondering about capture resolution before I remembered that TV these days is digital, so it would be recording an already-compressed stream of data. I suppose my head is still in the analogue days ;-)
[22:29] <waveform> hodapp, ahhh - I *think* that's related to the video splitter actually
[22:29] <hodapp> it may be. I'm using the splitter, because I'm trying to also monitor motion estimation vectors at 640x480 at the same time
[22:30] <waveform> the splitter introduces quite a few issues (as I discovered to my cost after sticking it on permanently :)
[22:30] <hodapp> huh
[22:30] <hodapp> is the splitter an MMAL thing? or a picamera thing?
[22:31] <waveform> and in particular when it comes to passing through RGB and BGR data - I get the impression it was only ever intended for use with YUV and OPAQUE formats
[22:31] <waveform> it's an MMAL thing
[22:31] <hodapp> perhaps I should just be dumping raw images, dealing with the mandatory mode switch (if I must have my H264 motion vectors), and not worrying about this
[22:31] <waveform> but picamera uses it permanently - as in it always stuffs a splitter on the video port (unless you play around at the lower mmalobj layer)
[22:31] <friendofafriend> lopta: Yep, you're just getting a nice MPEG transport stream with MPEG or h264/h265 video. No drag on a Pi, or even something less.
[22:31] <waveform> that was probably a design error on my part, but it's waaaay too late to fix it now :)
[22:32] <lpotter> hey hodapp! hows it going? You set off my 'sensors' blinger :)

[22:32] <friendofafriend> lopta: I've multicasted ATSC transport streams to a LAN with ~800MHz wireless routers, it's really very smooth. :)
[22:33] <friendofafriend> The best part is that you can watch the entire transponder at one time, so the main and all subchannels. Or DVR the subchannels while you watch the main, whatever it might be.

[22:35] <lopta> Nice!
[22:35] <hodapp> unless I don't understand splitters

[22:37] <waveform> (which is a valid thing to do - the preview port can run at a different res)
[22:37] <waveform> can't remember if the preview port is entirely happy doing RGB output, but it's worth a whirl
[22:37] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@cpe-75-187-160-45.neo.res.rr.com) Quit (Client Quit)
[22:37] <hodapp> waveform: that requires no splitter?

[22:38] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@cpe-75-187-160-45.neo.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:38] <waveform> hodapp, indeed - the camera always has three outputs: video and preview (which are fairly similar, but video outputs dual-images in opaque format which the H.264 encoder takes advantage of), and the still port, which outputs image strips in opaque format for high res work
[22:39] <waveform> the splitter theoretically takes an input and always produces four outputs, but under the covers there's a lot of hidden complexity
[22:39] <lpotter> hodapp: still dont have anything for my pi zero to do
[22:40] <waveform> for instance, if you feed opaque format through it, it strips the dual-image format from the video port down to single image format (which the H.264 encoder will work with, but it needs to do more as it then needs to buffer a frame for doing ME)
[22:40] <waveform> at some point in the past it would also fail on RGB or BGR format (I forget which, but it worked for one but not the other :)
[22:40] <hodapp> waveform: has the preview port an H264 encoder that can produce motion estimation vectors, or is that just the video port?
[22:41] <waveform> you can slap the H.264 encoder on any port except the stills port - video, preview, splitter out, whatever you like. It'll work with YUV and opaque inputs, and for the latter the single or dual-frame sub-formats are both acceptable
[22:41] <waveform> (but dual from the video port is the most efficient as there's no need for it to buffer the spare frame for ME)
[22:41] <hodapp> seems like I could do either video port at 2592x1944 spitting out RGB + preview port at 640x480 giving H264 motion estimation vectors, or vice versa
[22:42] <waveform> I'd probably go vice versa just to give the H.264 encoder the dual-frame format
[22:42] <hodapp> hm, not familiar with the single vs. dual-frame here
[22:44] <waveform> it's not relevant for anything but the OPQV format (which is sort of the "internal" format which just passes pointers around within the firmware rather than actual frame data)
[22:44] <lopta> Hopefully I can capture the SD streams.
[22:44] <lopta> ...write them to an SSD or a couple of hard disks.
[22:44] * lopta ponders
[22:45] <friendofafriend> lopta: You're talking about the standard def subchannels on ATSC?
[22:46] * lopta nods
[22:46] <hodapp> this sounds promising. if I can lock down the exposure settings and get rid of auto-everything, that's not quite raw sensor data, but the lower 2 bits of the sensor rarely seem to give me anything of value unless I do a lot of averaging
[22:46] <hodapp> but it has the huge benefit that I need not demosaic on the CPU
[22:46] <friendofafriend> You absolutely can capture those, along with the subtitles. No transcoding necessary.
[22:46] <lopta> friendofafriend: If the HD stream is 720p, perhaps I can do that too.

[22:47] <friendofafriend> You can capture the whole kit and kaboodle, it's about 15Mbps.
[22:47] <waveform> oh, theoretically locked down exposure should be coming to picamera soon (the newer firmwares permit setting analog and digital exposure) - but I've got a load of piwheels stuff I need to merge, and a new job to settle into before I can meaningfully get back to picamera unfortunately
[22:47] <lopta> 15 Mbits/sec?
[22:47] * n0nada (~nonada@188.166.123.39) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[22:47] <hodapp> oh, I thought you could already lock down the exposure settings (just not exactly set them manually)
[22:47] <lopta> That's about 1.8 Mbytes/sec, which isn't bad at all.
[22:47] <lopta> I could write that to a single disk.
[22:47] <waveform> sorry, that's what I mean: manual setting (yes, you can lock them but not set them currently)
[22:48] <friendofafriend> lopta: Yep, it works just fine.
[22:48] <hodapp> that's all I need, I think. if it can tell me what they are, and I can do exposure compensation on top of that perhaps (so I can bracket), that should be plenty
[22:48] <lopta> waveform: Is there DVR software for Linux that you'd recommend for the Raspberry Pi 2B or 3B+?
[22:49] * n0nada (~nonada@188.166.123.39) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:49] <waveform> hodapp, exposure_mode = 'off' should lock the exposure settings to whatever they currently are, and awb_mode = 'off' does likewise for the AWB gains (they can be set manually too in the current release with the awb_gains property)
[22:50] <waveform> however, if you want to play around with sticking the preview port into RGB mode you need to be making your own pipelines, which means messing with the mmalobj layer

[23:02] <ali1234> it just about worked

[23:03] <waveform> but in terms of processing power, it ought to handle it - remember that all the video decoding is done on the GPU (kodi's had MMAL support for some time) so the CPU has plenty of spare capacity during playback

[23:04] <waveform> and assuming you're not transcoding stuff (i.e. just dumping MPEG straight from DVB to disk) all the backend really has to do is some more IO - so my guess is it all comes down to that
[23:04] <waveform> yup MMAL is the media interface used for the camera, H.264 decoding, encoding, etc. - or one of them anyway (it's the broadcom one) - the other is openmax which I think kodi supports too

[23:26] <CoJaBo> lol
[23:26] <CoJaBo> But it's the principle of the thing, dammit!
[23:28] <Encrypt> Anyway... I'm still unsure whether I should buy a Raspberry Pi 2 or a Raspberry Pi 3B(+) to run Kodi on it and watch TV with the TV HAT.
[23:28] <H__> 3B+ because faster
[23:28] <CoJaBo> 3B+ because 5Ghz wifi
[23:28] <Khaytsus> Encrypt: You don't have a tv?
[23:29] <Encrypt> I don't need Wi-Fi, nor bluetooth
[23:29] <CoJaBo> Whats a TV hat
[23:29] <Encrypt> Khaytsus, I have a TV but my father would like to record movies and other stuff that often finished at midnight...
[23:30] <Encrypt> So here comes the Pi, Kodi and Tvheadend

[23:34] <friendofafriend> It's nice to have a TV tuner just for the timesource in the transport stream.
[23:35] <friendofafriend> (That's dvbdate in the dvb-apps package.)

[23:45] <friendofafriend> Khaytsus: Indeedly, and you'll find setting the time is often neglected by broadcast engineers at your local station. GPS is worlds better, but when you've got a Pi, no RTC, and a TV tuner? Pretty good.
[23:46] <Khaytsus> Id' more likely have a gps ;)

[23:47] <friendofafriend> GPS can be very hard to receive in a structure. As an added bonus, dvbdate will work with a "ClearQAM" tuner on cable TV networks. Probably with that DVB-C stuff, too.

[23:48] <friendofafriend> Cable companies are typically better about setting their time correctly, because the customer is often staring at it on their cable box.
