[0:00] * bltzfsck (~pi@162-225-15-82.lightspeed.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:00] * jerryq (~jerryq@32.97.110.51) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[0:01] <deathonater> rauldux: I abandoned the project, not sure if things have changed, but at the time it wasn't easy to get high quality digital audio out of the Pi Zero to a headphone jack without an impractical amount of work
[0:02] <rauldux> what os did u use?
[0:02] <X-M4ch1nA> I'm afraid of allowing too much power and burning it out
[0:03] <deathonater> I used raspbian for testing, but without the hardware built out, I didn't even get to the software optimization and configuration phase
[0:03] <X-M4ch1nA> Or does pis incoming power only allow 3.5v even if plugged into a 5v hub?
[0:03] <Lartza> X-M4ch1nA, Eh... 3.5?
[0:04] * defsdoor (~Andrew@cpc120600-sutt6-2-0-cust232.19-1.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:04] <X-M4ch1nA> 3.7?
[0:04] <rauldux> usb always 5v
[0:04] <Lartza> Pi's don't run with under 4.6 at the very best
[0:04] <X-M4ch1nA> Or is that just output that's 3.5
[0:04] <Lartza> You want 5.25V ideally
[0:05] <X-M4ch1nA> Lartza ok thanks
[0:05] <rauldux> 3v3 is gpio out
[0:05] <Lartza> (The cable resistance cuts it down)
[0:05] <X-M4ch1nA> Why the extra .25?
[0:05] <X-M4ch1nA> Ok awesome
[0:05] <Lartza> But with good cables and a good power supply 5V is enough
[0:05] <Lartza> The Pi has a low voltage warning
[0:06] <Lartza> With LED or lightning icon on the screen
[0:06] <X-M4ch1nA> On the 5v hub that icon shows?
[0:06] <X-M4ch1nA> Without the extra .25?
[0:06] <Lartza> It can if the hub isn't good or your cables are bad
[0:07] <Lartza> Zeroes can happily run from computer usb
[0:08] <Lartza> Make sure your hub can deliver enough amps
[0:08] <BurtyB> Lartza, happily ish (they have quite an inrush current)
[0:08] <Lartza> Ah, fair enough
[0:08] <Lartza> I have no personal experience
[0:09] * X-M4ch1nA (~X-M4ch1nA@205-83-181-166.mobile.uscc.net) Quit (Quit: Quit)
[0:09] <toastintheshell> are there any bootloaders other than noobs or berryboot that people use? is grub not an option?
[0:10] <Lartza> u-boot?
[0:10] <deathonater> I think I'm just gonna put nextcloud on the pi to do file transfers
[0:11] * ThomasLuong (ThomasLuon@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/thomasluong) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:11] <Lartza> If you aren't using the pi for anything else that's not the worst idea :P
[0:13] <toastintheshell> oh cool, I haven't tried that one
[0:14] <toastintheshell> is grub x86 only or something?
[0:14] * r1ch (~r1ch@24-151-48-152.static.nwtn.ct.charter.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:14] <Lartza> no
[0:15] <deathonater> Holy crap, NextCloud has a lot of files
[0:16] <toastintheshell> Lartza: no grub isn't x86* only?
[0:16] <Lartza> Who counts though :)
[0:16] <Lartza> toastintheshell, It's available for plenty of architectures
[0:17] <toastintheshell> gotcha, I was just wondering why I've never seen anyone use it with a pi
[0:17] <Lartza> Because how would you load it? From u-boot? :)
[0:17] * r1ch (~r1ch@24-151-48-152.static.nwtn.ct.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:17] * egc (~egc@2605:a601:418c:6600:c86f:3930:b15b:757f) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 1.9.1)
[0:19] <toastintheshell> Lartza: I have no idea, I'm not as well versed in the bootloading process and the architecture behind it as I'd like to be
[0:21] <toastintheshell> why could u-boot be loaded without help, but not grub? I'm gathering the bootloading process is just very different on arm than x86*?
[0:22] * Lorduncan (~Thunderbi@47.63.205.57) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:22] <Lartza> Ehh I mean ARM can have UEFI
[0:22] <Lartza> It's really mostly because of how the Pi boots, and how the GPU is the processor running bootcode
[0:22] <toastintheshell> but the pis aren't uefi right?
[0:22] <Lartza> At least that's my take on it
[0:23] <toastintheshell> the GPU is the processor? not the other way around?
[0:23] <Lartza> GPU loads bootcode and starts the CPU with it
[0:24] * Buster (Buster@2001:470:1f0b:1639::2) Quit ()
[0:25] * r1ch (~r1ch@24-151-48-152.static.nwtn.ct.charter.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:25] <toastintheshell> oh wow that's not a normal thing computers do from my understanding
[0:26] <CoJaBo> It's common for SoCs to do stuff like that
[0:26] * MacGeek (~BSD@host183-218-dynamic.20-79-r.retail.telecomitalia.it) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:26] * michaelsdunn1 (~michaelsd@unaffiliated/michaelsdunn1) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:27] <toastintheshell> interesting, is there an easy tldr explanation for why they choose to do it that way?
[0:27] * r1ch (~r1ch@24-151-48-152.static.nwtn.ct.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:28] <CoJaBo> Probably because embedded systems with GPUs are usually built around the GPU. The CPU is just an accessory so it can run code to display stuff on the GPU.
[0:30] * r1ch (~r1ch@24-151-48-152.static.nwtn.ct.charter.com) Quit (Client Quit)
[0:34] * binaryhermit (~binaryher@unaffiliated/binaryhermit) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 2.3)
[0:35] * deathonater (ae2c15d5@gateway/web/freenode/ip.174.44.21.213) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[0:37] <toastintheshell> CoJaBo: interesting, thanks for that explanation
[0:38] * basteh (~basteh@unaffiliated/basteh) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:39] * TheSin (~TheSin@d199-126-165-217.abhsia.telus.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:39] <CoJaBo> toastintheshell: The CPU is also often a stock IP component, so it may also just be easier to design the custom GPU to boot up the system
[0:42] <toastintheshell> hm, so is the raspi GPU running on RISC as well?
[0:43] <Lartza> toastintheshell, Custom instruction set that is only available under NDA from Broadcom

[2:00] <friendofafriend> infojunky: Motion sure is great, but it can be a little heavy. mjpg-streamer has a lot less overhead, if you just want camera feeds.
[2:01] <infojunky> yea.. just looking for a camera feed... let me go investigate.. thanks. new to this particular subset of pi things...
[2:02] <friendofafriend> You're very welcome! mjpg-streamer is so lean that it even runs on cruddy old wireless routers. You'll be pleased.

[6:55] <alkisg> Hi, so this line is needed in dnsmasq.conf to make rpi netboot: pxe-service=X86PC,"Raspberry Pi Boot",/some/path
[6:55] <alkisg> I have 2 problems with it. (1) Why X86PC? Shouldn't ARM32_EFI or ARM64_EFI be used instead?
[6:55] <alkisg> And (2), it completely ignores /some/path there, how can I have the rpi boot files in a subdirectory, so as to not clutter my /var/lib/tftpboot dir?

[7:08] <immibis> alkisg: well 'man dnsmasq' lists a bunch of types none of which are ARM, so I assume that X86PC was used as a 'default' option for widest compatibility (maybe some servers only support X86PC?)
[7:08] <immibis> and TFTP doesn't support directories, as far as I know.
[7:09] <alkisg> immibis: maybe you're seeing an old dnsmasq version; X86PC means "non efi x86 pc",

[7:10] <alkisg> Yes, it's completely ignored, both absolute and relative

[7:15] <alkisg> Hardcoding a path would be OK too; e.g. $TFTP/raspberry/config.txt, so that we put the files in the raspberry subdir; otherwise it's similar to putting things in the root folder, /, very unogranized for netbooting servers...
[7:17] <alkisg> But in general, reading the path from that directive is much more flexible, it even allows to split the clients at the pxe level, and specify "these clients will boot from that image, and the other clients in the other lab from that other image"

[11:34] <mfa298> alkisg: most (probably all) of the tftp files can be in a folder based on the Pi's serial number. The very first part of the boot process (getting bootcode.bin) is very limited as there's a very small non-updateable BROM on the Pi which does the dhcp request and gets bootcode.bin (after that maybe they can add some flexibililty but I don't know the details)
[11:36] <alkisg> mfa298: having e.g. 50 different subdirs for 50 pis isn't really feasible. Currently I'm trying with bootcode.bin on an sd card on an rpi2.
[11:36] <mfa298> bootcode.bin might need to be in the root folder - I can't remember now, but the rest should all be able to be seperated by serial (you could probably have a folder per setup and symlinks)
[11:38] <alkisg> I can see the paths from the dnsmasq logs; bootcode.bin is requested a number of times, even though it's already loaded, but there's no provision for one dir for all clients
[11:39] <mfa298> best option I suspect would be make a folder for your client types, then have a set of symlinks for each serial number pointing to the folder with the relevant files - that probably shouldn't be too hard to automate.
[11:43] <alkisg> mfa298: I'm trying to optimize the support for raspberry in ltsp (terminal server project) - what pinet is using as a base. There's no easy way to automate symlink creation for an unknown number of users out there, with an unknown number of clients each...
[11:44] <alkisg> In any case, having e.g. 50 symlinks in the root tftp folder isn't much better than just putting the firmware in the tftp root folder
[11:44] <alkisg> Thank you very much for your input, but I don't think those solutions should be included in the upstream ltsp codebase...

[11:53] <mfa298> for the models that support netbooting natively (3B and 3B+) I don't think they load bootcode.bin more than once and all the dhcp stuff happens before bootcode.bin is loaded.
[11:56] <alkisg> In any case, newer bootcode.bin versions will eventually happen; it'll be good to fix things
[11:56] <alkisg> Currently it's even using the wrong pxe service, the one used by PCs

[14:36] <Cobalt> Hello. Quick question: I'm looking at the zero2go omini to help power my rpi0w. Whilst it says it will shutdown the pi on loss of power, the documentation is not very clear whether this is an ACPI shutdown or whether it just introduces a delay while you shutdown the pi yourself. Does anyone have any practical experience of it?
[14:39] <shauno> Cobalt: looking at http://www.uugear.com/doc/Zero2Go_Omini_UserManual.pdf page 12; "Zero2Go Omini allows you to specify a voltage threshold, that when all input voltages are below this threshold, Zero2Go will suggest Raspberry Pi to shutdown (by pulling down GPIO-4 for a moment)."
[14:40] <Cobalt> shauno: I saw that, but wondered if it had a hook script for initiating shutdown or whether you had to implement it yourself.
[14:40] <Cobalt> The web doesn't seem to be as rich with graceful shutdowns as my last search a few months ago, when I didn't actually need it. :(
[14:41] <ShorTie> sounds like it has a nice shutdown built in
[14:41] * korryd (~korryd@va-76-4-65-131.sta.embarqhsd.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[14:42] <shauno> if you check in /boot/overlays/README there's canned overlays for gpio-shutdown and/or gpio-poweroff now, which sound like they should be compatible
[14:42] <Cobalt> Hah. I'll give it a try. The idea is to set up a box with a GPS receiver on it, power it up when the car starts, and shutdown nicely when the engine is turned off. Log all the travels. :D
[14:43] <Cobalt> shauno: Thanks.
