[4:29] <AHemlocksLie> Anyone got FreeBSD running on Pi 3B? Mine seems to be firmly refusing to boot the image. Extracted the .xz to get the actual .img, dd'd that on, but... Nothing. Red light on for power, no blinky green light like I get when I tried a Raspbian image
[4:30] * hybrid (~tribrid@47.184.162.27) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[4:30] <AHemlocksLie> And the FreeBSD wiki page on Raspberry Pis has a lot of info except... Properly installing it to the SD card. That part seems missing.
[4:30] <friendofafriend> What dd command did you run?
[4:32] <AHemlocksLie> dd if=.img of=/dev/sdb conv=fsync status=progress bs=4M. I just found a year old Stack Exchange post using it without the conv and bs=1M
[4:33] <AHemlocksLie> I didn't realize I needed to extract the .xz at first, so I tried a basic version first and more closely mimicked the Raspbian instructions when that failed before realizing I needed to decompress it
[4:33] <AHemlocksLie> It's definitely a Pi 3B with a Pi 3 image
[4:35] <AHemlocksLie> Trying again with bs=1M and dropping the conv=fsync
[4:41] * taza (~taza@unaffiliated/taza) Quit ()
[4:41] <AHemlocksLie> Yep, that did it. I suspect it was the conv, but I don't know quite enough to rule out the bs change

[7:05] <Smeef> On an unrelated note, what's a safe amount of neopixels that I can drive with the 5v rail on a Pi without damaging the Pi?
[7:07] <password2> 1
[7:08] <password2> check the specs for ws2812B and the rpi 5V rail

[7:17] <Smeef> Not sure, currently it's driving a small OLED, and the on-board Wi-Fi and LEDs, I have bluetooth disabled to save power
[7:19] <Smeef> Actually, I wouldn't need the neopixels if I can figure out how to change the I2C address of the PiOLED so I can add a second one. Although, I think it's hardcoded into the one 3-pin IC on the back.
[7:21] <Smeef> I think they're all shipped with 0x3C as the I2C address
[7:24] <password2> use a cs pin?
[7:25] <friendofafriend> webmin, that's a blast from the past. I remember that being in RedHat 5 back around '98
[7:25] <Smeef> Adafruit sells an I2C multiplexer
[7:25] <Smeef> "You just found the perfect I2C sensor, and you want to wire up two or three or more of them to your Arduino when you realize "Uh oh, this chip has a fixed I2C address, and from what I know about I2C, you cannot have two devices with the same address on the same SDA/SCL pins!" Are you out of luck? You would be, if you didn't have this ultra-cool TCA9548A 1-to-8 I2C multiplexer!"

[7:32] <Wafficus> hi there, question regarding raspberry pi, what would be some good services to spin on a pi? I ask because since I help out with Lubuntu OS, they told me to try to get some server experience on my Raspberry Pi first by spinning a couple of services, and I'm kind of wondering what they mean. Like, should I install and run programs for users to use after ssh'ing into the Pi (i.e rss feeds?) Let me know any
[7:32] <Wafficus> beginner friendly services I can install.
[7:37] <Smeef> You can run a simple LAMPP server, and you can also run a NAS using OpenMediaVault or NextCloud

[7:44] <Wafficus> ah I see LAMPP, sweet. So I'll research LAMP at that point
[7:45] <Wafficus> *LAMPP
[7:45] <Wafficus> is that like CPanel?
[7:45] <Wafficus> or totally different?
[7:46] <Smeef> password2, depends on the parts, their TFTs are generic SPI, but they have some custom-built stuff that I'd be hard-pressed to find decent alternatives for, like the Powerboost 1000c

[8:02] <Smeef> Also, I don't use Ali Express
[8:02] <password2> what i dislike about adafruit is basically they get you up and running fast , but at the same time they don't teach you much

[8:03] <mlelstv> the question is what aliexpress teaches you :)
[8:03] <password2> i have 18 packets incomming
[8:03] <password2> mlelstv, to read datasheets
[8:03] <password2> because they will not tell you anything :P
[8:04] <Smeef> I live in NYC, not far away from a Micro Center, if I want a component for a project and don't want to wait 2 weeks for something that has an uncomfortably high chance of being defective with virtually no practical recourse to return or replace the item, I rather just buy it locally

[8:05] <password2> in electronics there is

[19:23] <ohnx> The only things that are plugged in are ethernet and power. I've tried two different power adapters and two different ethernet cables/ports

[19:24] <ohnx> Khaytsus: uhh the official one, I think? One of them is 5.1V and the other is 5V
[19:24] <ohnx> It's not rebooting

[19:28] <ohnx> and the thing is, this is not the only pi with the issue. I've tried with another pi 2 and it has the same issue
[19:28] <ohnx> that one is running minibian 2015
[19:28] <ohnx> is my house cursed?
[19:29] <Khaytsus> Apparently.
[19:29] <Habbie> do you have a screen and keyboard?
[19:29] <ohnx> yes
[19:30] <ohnx> the pi can't connect to the internet either
[19:30] <ohnx> could this be issues with ipv6 maybe?
[19:30] <Habbie> my first guess would be an ip conflict on your network

[21:22] <Fantti> Hi! Are there people who have used Raspi and ESP8266 wifi chip together? Is it difficult? My main problem is basically as simple as it gets: ESP8266 should toggle a pin when a Raspi user commands it to do so. All this via wifi.
[21:23] <friendofafriend> Fantti: You have an ESP8266, you have a Raspberry Pi. How do they communicate to each other? By wifi?
[21:23] <Habbie> i highly recommend MQTT
[21:23] <Habbie> for communicating between your two devices
[21:24] <Habbie> although the last time i did something with an esp and a pi, i used UDP
[21:25] <Fantti> friendofafriend yes...ESP8266 is a wifi controller
[21:25] <Habbie> calling it a 'wifi controller' is confusing
