[1:49] <faLUCE> Hello. I have a program (arduino, which is made with java) that when launched has the borders of the window that go out of the screen. I can move the window with ALT key (so I can limit the problem) but some scroll menus go out the screen .... is there a way to contain ALL in the desktop ?

[1:55] <mlelstv> make the window smaller?
[1:56] <akk> Some apps just don't work on small screens, they're poorly designed by people who always have a huge monitor available.
[1:56] <Khaytsus> Or they're just java and therefore terrible guis
[1:57] <akk> I usually file a bug against the app or post something to their mailing list when that happens.
[1:57] <akk> Fritzing has a problem like that on some systems due to a problem in the way they choose fonts by screen resolution.
[1:58] <akk> (java again)
[1:59] <Khaytsus> Fritzing is java? Interseting

[10:26] <Ben64> potentially a lot, trying to make this into a product
[10:27] <gordonDrogon> worth getting one official dev. board then, then making your own in time I guess...
[10:27] <Ben64> i don't see the advantage of that over just a raspberry pi
[10:28] * Envil (~envil@mail.vermes.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[10:28] <gordonDrogon> you've just said why - "sloppy - lots of soldering and components and micro usb"
[10:28] <gordonDrogon> the advantage is that you design your own IO board, plug in a CM and off you go.
[10:29] <gordonDrogon> However... If you already have a Zero system going, then (re) design an IO board, plug the zero in and off you go.
[10:29] <Ben64> i have 6 zero systems going
[10:29] <gordonDrogon> there are many systems now with a heade socket for the Zero to just plug in and go.
[10:29] <Ben64> i wanted to remove another weak point - the sd card
[10:30] <gordonDrogon> you're answering your own questions now :)
[10:30] <gordonDrogon> or talking yourself into it..
[10:30] <Ben64> so even though the compute module is 7x as expensive, seems like a good plan for a real product
[10:30] <Ben64> just don't know what is needed on the board for the cm to work
[10:30] <gordonDrogon> what abou the CM Lite? Though that was much chaper..

[10:35] <gordonDrogon> so you need a nice PCB - then the issue is getting composite video from the Zero to your PCB - I think you could do that with another pin and header socket on your PCB.
[10:36] <gordonDrogon> then work out a strategy to run from ram or read-only and you're more or less there with a zero.

I will probably do the latter for reliability.

[22:08] <Roxxor91> Hi! I would like to create a "smart speaker/radio" with an old radio and the RPi2. I would like to power everythign with one power supply. The speaker worked with a 4,5V with 800mA power supply, so I thought I could supply the speakers from the RPi itself (5V pin + GRND). It also generally works. Problem: When I turn off/on or change volume of the speakers I guess it leads to a fluctuation in voltage and the RPi reboots. How can I
[22:08] <Roxxor91> revent this? Would it work if I just power the speakers and the RPi in parralel? Or do I need to create some special circuit? THanks for your help!

[23:39] <friendofafriend> stiv: You're krilling me.
[23:39] <stiv> heh
[23:39] <DanielTheFox> lol
[23:40] <DanielTheFox> brought my RPi 3B+ power consumption to 330mA by making it mostly single-purpose
[23:41] <DanielTheFox> today i made it like a "dream machine", it plays all the songs from a specific directory if pins 34 and 35 are being shorted (with a jumper, for example), at a reasonable volume, through the analog audio output
[23:41] * Soul_Eater (~marcelo@unaffiliated/soul-eater/x-4649632) Quit (Client Quit)
[23:42] <DanielTheFox> a jumper on pins 39/40 sets it into "portable access point" mode
[23:42] <DanielTheFox> additionally, pins 37/38 shorted tell the computer to ignore Ethernet input, disable any video output and power the USB hub down
[23:43] <DanielTheFox> (effectively making it headless, but WiFi is still working, I can still connect to its SSID, SSH into it and do whatever i want)
[23:43] <friendofafriend> DanielTheFox: Using a bank of DIP switches?
[23:43] <DanielTheFox> friendofafriend: could be useful too
[23:43] <DanielTheFox> but I'm mostly old-school, using jumpers
[23:44] <DanielTheFox> I know these can be dangerous if misused, but oh well
[23:44] <friendofafriend> There's a project called minipwner that was setting function modes by DIP switch.
[23:45] <DanielTheFox> I ran it last night, ~23:00, powerbank was 99% battery (12500mAh full capacity)
[23:45] <DanielTheFox> when I woke up, it was 6:50 or so, the battery was 72%
[23:46] <friendofafriend> That's really excellent run times! Is that changes to config.txt?
[23:46] <DanielTheFox> it's mostly rc.local
[23:46] <DanielTheFox> but I also poked at config.txt for optimizations
[23:47] <DanielTheFox> mostly, underclocking the CPU
[23:47] <DanielTheFox> 400 MHz
[23:47] <DanielTheFox> I powered the LEDs down, but not for power saving, but actually for hiding it somewhere in case I wanted to
[23:48] <DanielTheFox> I expected that the heat generated would give me a hint of the Pi still being on
[23:48] <DanielTheFox> but actually
[23:48] <DanielTheFox> nothing was warm to touch
[23:48] <DanielTheFox> the SoC, the hub, whatever big metal pieces the Pi had
[23:48] <DanielTheFox> nothing, nearly no heat, it was the same if the device was on or off
[23:49] <friendofafriend> I'm sure that board runs amazingly cool at 400MHz. Wowzers.
[23:50] <DanielTheFox> but I think the main heroes there were powering the video output AND the internal USB hub off
[23:50] <DanielTheFox> not just the underclocking
[23:50] <DanielTheFox> (idle clock CPU was 100 MHz btw)
[23:50] <DanielTheFox> so, well
[23:51] <gordonDrogon> might a Zero be more appropriate?
[23:51] <friendofafriend> Have you posted your changes someplace? I don't even have a Pi3, but I'd love to peruse them.
[23:51] <friendofafriend> gordonDrogon: Will the Pi Zero let you change clock?
[23:51] <DanielTheFox> despite the WiFi was there, broadcasting its SSID over the air, and the music was playing there, it lasts a lotta time
[23:51] <DanielTheFox> friendofafriend: nowhere

[23:51] <DanielTheFox> my scripts are too inappropiate and would cause heart attacks on most Linux coders
[23:52] <DanielTheFox> config.txt would be better to post around? if you want to, I'll give it to you in a sec
[23:52] * vlt (~vlt@2a01:488:66:1000:57e6:5dd1:0:1) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:52] <DanielTheFox> (my scripts don't do sanity checks anywhere and rely on a lot of things existing on /root)
[23:52] <gordonDrogon> friendofafriend, should do, but I've never tried. I fix mine at 1Ghz.
[23:53] <friendofafriend> Please, DanielTheFox! Fiddlesticks on those Johnny-come-lately neckbeards, let 'em choke on their pale ale.
[23:53] * hijackeel (~weechat@gateway/tor-sasl/hijackeel) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:53] <DanielTheFox> gordonDrogon: except for the music part, yes, a Pi Zero W would be fancier for that
[23:53] <DanielTheFox> as a portable access point
[23:53] <DanielTheFox> it'd need the GPIO pins tho
[23:53] <DanielTheFox> so I'll want either the Zero WH or I'll have to solder things around
[23:53] <gordonDrogon> you can get Zeros with the header pins pre-soldered.
[23:54] <gordonDrogon> I solder, therefore I am :)
[23:54] <friendofafriend> You could probably make a neat HAT for some DIP switches out of perfboard.

[23:55] <DanielTheFox> also, my scripts are a little bit too dirty and absolutely not commented
[23:55] <DanielTheFox> and config.txt includes configs for a sometimes-existing 3.5" GPIO screen
[23:55] <friendofafriend> DanielTheFox: Don't worry about stuff like that, it's all useful.

[23:56] <DanielTheFox> handily, that GPIO/SPI screen doesn't use the new-edition GPIO pins, which ARE used by my scripts
[23:56] <DanielTheFox> ok
[23:56] <DanielTheFox> if you say so... :)
[23:56] <stiv> many many moons ago, a famous hardware columnist for a computer mag was asked "what's your favorite programming language?" Answer: solder
