[6:14] <st3fann> Hello, I am having issues getting my pi to boot from an SD card created with etcher. I am trying to install CrankShaft, have tried multiple versions and none of them seem to be able to boot. I am getting no signal on the monitor, the ACT light keeps flashing sporadically, and about 30 seconds in the pi restarts. This is so weird because booting from a formatted SD card (Same one) with noobs boots fine, installing raspian through
[6:15] <st3fann> I also tried flashing the raspian zip and img files to the microSD, those don't boot either

[8:50] <Plasmoduck> I'd like to use my usb wifi dongle with my OpenWrt Pi, so I can connect my phone via wifi to the lan network devices, basically at the moment, the pi is connected to the internet via wifi (192.168.1.*) and sharing that internet to ethernet (192.168.2.*) I want to create a hotspot with my usb wifi so I can connect to the internet via it but also access devices on the 192.168.2.* subnet. How can I do this?

[9:21] <Plasmoduck> Okay I got that done, now what about if I want to run the command 'sbnc' as user pi when system starts up?
[9:22] <rpjsf> Plasmoduck: you could put it into /etc/rc.local
[9:23] <Plasmoduck> But will that run it as root? Or it doesn't matter?
[9:23] <rpjsf> Plasmoduck: it will run as root, and as for if it matters or not, that depends on what you're running & what privileges it needs. but yeah, rc.local will run as root
[9:24] <Plasmoduck> Okay, so whats the format to just run 'sbnc'? Do I just simply put the word: sbnc on a new line?
[9:24] <Plasmoduck> I'd rather just run it as pi user.
[9:24] <Plasmoduck> Thats how I do now.
[9:25] <rpjsf> Plasmoduck: you should use the fully-qualified path name to the command ('which sbnc')

[9:25] <rpjsf> Plasmoduck: or setuid the binary, any of the standard *nix privilege (d)escalation techniques
[9:25] <Plasmoduck> It doesn't need root
[9:26] <rpjsf> Plasmoduck: sudo lets you run commands as any user, not just root

[13:04] <shiftplusone> tons of sites run on WP without any issues. Plenty of decent addons too. Just don't go installing random ones without vetting them and looks up some guides on how to secure it further

[13:09] <Lartza> Yeah WP sites really get hit by spam and hack attempts

[13:10] <Lartza> I've deployed more fences to WP alone than my whole rest of the server alltogether
[13:10] <Khaytsus> Yeah. There are whole _suites_ of scriptkiddie tools for finding and hacking WP.

[13:15] <shiftplusone> Ran a blog for a few years that saw much more traffic than I expected. No issues at all, despite all the bots trying to scan for vulnerabilities. And of course raspberrypi.org runs on wordpress. Just take basic precautions and keep an eye on what kinds of attacks people are trying and you'll be fine. I wouldn't build some enterprise site on it, but for a personal blog or some such, who cares.

[13:16] <Khaytsus> Wordpress is just like anything else.. it doesn't matter how secure it is if you do something dumb and open a huge hole. Like putting a massive lock on a gate and five feet away a section of the fence is gone.
[13:16] <Khaytsus> I personally just avoid it like the plague so I don't have to worry about it.
[13:16] <Khaytsus> Because once you put up a WP site you get scanned day and night

[13:18] <Lartza> Site gets 10-75 views per day
[13:18] <Lartza> So yeah...
[13:19] <Khaytsus> fail2ban is great to limit the automated scanning, but if they get in that first time...

[13:24] <shiftplusone> If it's so easy to hack, then the vulnerabilities are known. If they're known, they're patched. From what I've seen most of the time they're scanning for old unpatched versions of wordpress. It's easy to find a vulnerable wordpress site, but that's a separate question from whether wordpress itself is inherently a huge risk. If there's an unknown exploit, then the people using it better keep it on the down low rather than scanning
[13:24] <shiftplusone> targets of no value and giving it away.
[13:25] <shiftplusone> Anyway, having said all that, keeping an eye on it and keeping the site up to date (in term of information posted on it and the software itself) was too much work, so I wouldn't want to take on the burden of maintaining a wordpress site anymore.
[13:26] <Lartza> My scans mostly seem to try and find phpmyadmin etc
[13:26] <Lartza> The wordpress hacks are weird

[23:48] <akk> Has anyone found a way to clone a raspbian SD card to an SD card of a different size? I know this question keeps coming up but I've never seen an answer that works.
[23:49] <akk> My current attempt: dd the boot partition to a file, then from the file to the new card; create a new ext4 filesystem on the second card, and cp -ax to copy files to it.
[23:50] * semeion (~semeion@unaffiliated/semeion) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:50] <akk> But when I try to boot, it gets partway through boot and then hangs after finding the ethernet/wifi hardware.
[23:50] <Habbie> different size - smaller or bigger?
[23:51] <akk> Smaller.
[23:51] <Habbie> ah
[23:51] <akk> If I wait about 2.5 minutes after it finds the network hardware, it will progress to: random: crng init done
[23:51] <Habbie> i see a few issues with cp -ax but i have trouble seeing 'will not boot' from that
[23:52] <akk> but nothing after that.
[23:52] <Habbie> interesting
[23:52] <Habbie> probably something subtle
[23:52] <Habbie> i think cp -ax kills hardlinks though?
[23:52] <akk> Hmm, probably. It preserves symlinks but probably not hardlinks.
[23:53] <Habbie> that is my impression
[23:54] <akk> It didn't occur to me that there might be hard links that raspbian depends on.
[23:54] <Habbie> i'm not suggesting that
[23:54] <shauno> -a should preserve hardlinks
[23:54] <Habbie> it's just one thing that i see that breaks
[23:54] <akk> Okay, the thing that's supposed to happen after network and urandom is: systemd[1]: systemd 232 running in system mode. (+PAM +AUDIT +SELINUX +IMA +APPARMOR +SMACK +SYSVINIT +UTMP +LIBCRYPTSETUP +GCRYPT +GNUTLS +ACL +XZ +LZ4 +SECCOMP +BLKID +ELFUTILS +KMOD +IDN)
[23:55] <Habbie> shauno, oh you're right
[23:55] <akk> (if I boot off the original card rather than the clone)

[23:56] <akk> So it's not hanging on something simple, it's probably the whole "start systemd and everything under it" sequence.
[23:57] <akk> I can't believe it's so hard to clone a raspbian card. It takes so much work to start from an original raspbian image, configure it, update it, install everything, add users, ...
[23:58] <shauno> I only know that because bsd's cp -a doesn't, which caused me to create a cluster once upon a time
