[1:46] <lost_soul> _unreal_: what is the intended purpose? Sorry if I missed it, I just started paying attention to the channel after idling for quite some time.
[1:46] * plugwash (~plugwash@2a02:c7f:ba49:1500::2) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:46] <_unreal_> I'm building the ultimate RPI/sbc CASE
[1:47] <lost_soul> just the two fans or did I miss one?
[1:47] <_unreal_> lost_soul, https://drive.google.com/open?id=1k7sAI4xB9p0f6mfdPIE6ce43ON0Eaqbw https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HWeDVibeGsHmnQ9Xb-OLN7xT8nqdX2IM
[1:47] <_unreal_> 2 fans?
[1:47] <lost_soul> one there on the front and wasn't their one under.. I could swear I saw a grill for a fan
[1:48] <_unreal_> :) I'll let you sort that one out. just posted enouph photos to..
[1:48] <lost_soul> ah, no fan there
[1:48] <lost_soul> yep, I see it
[1:49] <_unreal_> the shell is all fiberglass I built molds to make the shell
[1:50] <lost_soul> looks like an xt-60 connector there, or is it a 30 that just looks larger?
[1:50] <_unreal_> it is
[1:50] <lost_soul> pretty nice setup, anything going off to the left where the space is?
[1:50] <_unreal_> I have tons of quad stuff
[1:51] <_unreal_> i'm not sure yet
[1:51] <_unreal_> I have put out a challenage to anyone in the USA I'll build and give them a case if they can solve my entire software issue
[1:51] <_unreal_> https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QkWgHpnCRs6qtWHWWXF8qHhw2aM0cW4l
[1:51] <lost_soul> so is it meant to be a system you actually sit at and work or more of an appliance that you will just setup and let it run
[1:52] <_unreal_> this sysstem is going to be a cnc control station
[1:52] <lost_soul> ah, nice
[1:52] <_unreal_> Thats where my problem is
[1:53] <_unreal_> I have a tinker board. I need an image setup that is setup as RT linuxcnc and I need the GPIO's setup to work with linuxcnc like the parallel port does
[1:53] <_unreal_> I have not even had time to start Farking with the software side because the hardware side has been taking some time
[1:53] <lost_soul> yea, that happens
[1:54] <_unreal_> I'm waiting on shit that is shipping so I can finish a number of parts... just taking for ever to get here. Tomorrow I get fingers crossed my push buttons for the front pannel so I have my power buttons for lcd and SBC
[1:54] <_unreal_> and other LCD control buttons etc...
[1:54] <_unreal_> so there are a number of aspects that I need to solve
[1:54] <lost_soul> That is a problem many face since a good amount of electronics needed in projects like this are being shipped overseas
[1:55] <lost_soul> I am almost always waiting on packages to arrive.
[1:55] <_unreal_> ya @$#%@^#$^@$#%!#@$ amazon chine shit
[1:55] <_unreal_> My grill for the small fan is not do to arrive till the end of march or half way into aprl.
[1:55] <_unreal_> Farkme
[1:55] <lost_soul> most of the time you can find US sellers but they charge a couple bucks more for the same products, generally speaking
[1:55] <_unreal_> ya
[1:55] <_unreal_> and trust me I've been spending

[2:55] <_unreal_> the reason no one has responded is because no one knows what your talking about
[2:55] <shibboleth> is it possible to get analog video+audio from the jack on rpi2+?
[2:55] <_unreal_> you need to define what your talking about
[2:55] <lost_soul> you do now... video used to be separate on the b or b+ if memory serves
[2:55] <lost_soul> composite video anyways
[2:56] <shibboleth> great. i just can't recall seeing a "jack-to-dual-rca-for-audio+yellow-rca-for-video"-cable
[2:56] <_unreal_> lost_soul, I just got one of those $20 raspian things from amazon 6k roms and CD images over 2 32gig flash drives one SD and one thumb for RPI
[2:56] <_unreal_> freaking thing was lagit....

[2:57] <lost_soul> _unreal_: very nice
[2:59] <lost_soul> shibboleth: also their is no 2+, or at least none that I have ever heard of
[2:59] <shibboleth> rpi2 and beyond
[3:00] <lost_soul> I was only aware of a, b, b+, zero, zero-w, 3, and 3+
[3:01] <lost_soul> I must have missed a whole generation or something

[7:33] <friendofafriend> pi0: Howdy. Pretty good walkthrough here. https://purplepalmdash.github.io/2015/12/05/bluetooth-nap-how-to/

[7:41] <aZz7eCh> gawd depressing. so that machine was installed yesterday with all me new fancy pullups and code ... they phoned this morning first thing ... turned off cos it spent all night vending shit on the ground ... :(

[8:20] <pi0> bash script you mean?
[8:20] <toastintheshell> bash terminal
[8:21] <toastintheshell> can you ssh over hc-05 or is it more like direct serial?
[8:22] <pi0> i would like just a plain pi
[8:22] <pi0> 0
[8:22] <pi0> but at this point do what ever it tak\es
[8:23] <toastintheshell> a plain pi0?
[8:25] <toastintheshell> as far as I understand hc-05 is just a serial connection over bt, but it has something to do with security mode? so maybe that's encrypted?
[8:27] <toastintheshell> wouldn't want sensitive data over bluetooth without crypto if that's an issue
[8:28] <toastintheshell> but hold on, why don't you just set up the pi with a wifi hotspot and buy a usb dongle for your computer
[8:28] * cgp (~Thunderbi@maltamail.stanleybet.com.mt) has joined #raspberrypi
[8:31] <toastintheshell> wifi hotspot on pi0 -> usb wifi dongle connected to laptop connected as a client -> laptop's internal network wifi or eth connected -> local router wherever you are (since you said you'll be in different locations) -> internet
[8:34] <pi0> that just might have to be my option
[8:34] <toastintheshell> rpi would be a hotspot with something like 10.11.12.13/24 ip, you connect your usb wifi adapter to it and rpi gives you some address like 10.11.12.14/24, your other network adapters are free to connect to another hotspot/eth network on a different subnet e.g. 192.168.1.2/24
[8:34] <pi0> it sucks my surface pro only has 1 usb port available
[8:36] <toastintheshell> has the advantage of being easier, definitely ssh would work, you could pick up a dongle at best buy or wherever pretty much anywhere for pretty cheap
[8:36] <toastintheshell> you can always get a usb hub
[8:37] <toastintheshell> what did you do to get the usb networking work? standard raspbian image plus follow tutorials?
[8:37] <aZz7eCh> whats the issue with just using your phone/hotspot and connecting the pi with a usb wifi, and your notebook with wifi, to it ? at least - thats what i do
[8:39] <aZz7eCh> i have 70 machines across the city. I arrive, my hotspot on my phoen is turned on, the machine rpi's detects me arriving as a hotspot and connect to me. i can then ssh/log in
[8:39] <aZz7eCh> if i've comepletely missed what you're tryignt o achive, please ignore sorry :P
[8:40] <pi0> toastintheshell: i have a couple of dongles i am going to see which supports AP
[8:41] <pi0> i think i will setup the pi to be the AP
[8:41] <pi0> and i will connect to it with 1 dongle and have the builtin wifi to still access the net
[8:41] <toastintheshell> for some providers, simply connecting to your phone's hotspot, even if sharing some unrelated wifi connection, counts as using up data
[8:41] <aZz7eCh> i opted to let my phone be the AP, that way nosey nerds can sit next to my machines trying to hack the obvious access point

[9:43] <toastintheshell> I'd imagine I'd have to have it custom built but that could be a pretty neato completo solution to the pi cluster in a laptop formfactor project down the line if I get everything else working well

[20:11] <iKarith> It didn't used to once upon a time, but I think that's been fixed now. But I'm new to DKMS, so I figure I should ask before tearing my hair out if it doesn't work the first time.
[20:16] <aZz7eCh> i want to share a variable between to python scripts that are running. exactly how detrimental would it be to my sd-cards if i use a exists/doesnt exist on a file..? obviously would involve repeatedly creating, and repeating the very small file with next to nothign in it
[20:16] <aZz7eCh> two*
[20:18] <aZz7eCh> god... english is my primary language. I want to share variable between two scripts... my immediate thought is to have one create a file as way of storing a value ... then deleted when no longer set. so repeated creation/DELETION of file.
[20:19] <aZz7eCh> how detrimental to my sdcards would that be over time? is there another method i should consider ?
[20:19] <aZz7eCh> have one script launch the other as a subprocess and share variable globally somehow?

[20:26] <ShorTie> can't you just export it ??
[20:27] <ShorTie> export My_Variable = Got_me
[20:29] <stiv> is the 'variable' a variable or a constant?
[20:29] <aZz7eCh> variable. i have one script listening for GPIO event with no looping. if its triggered, i want it to set a 1 or 0 in a filename, and my second script, looping every 2 seconds, will pick it up and take action and set it back to 1 or 0, when done.
[20:30] <aZz7eCh> i didnt know anything about being able to use EXPORT ... am looking now
[20:31] <stiv> so essentially you want to send messages between processes when events occur
[20:31] <aZz7eCh> mhmm.
[20:32] <stiv> export won't work for that. a process gets a copy of the env vars when it starts
[20:32] <aZz7eCh> i was thinking instead of 1 or 0 in a file, could just, create file/delete file
[20:32] <aZz7eCh> have the looping 2sec script check if exists etc..
[20:32] <stiv> doing this in any particular language?

[20:38] <stiv> a couple ways to communicate between processes are pipes and queues.
[20:38] <stiv> the multiprocessing module also has some more exotic things like Events that you can wait for
[20:39] <aZz7eCh> but... original question ... anything 'really**' detrimental to my sdcards reading a file every second forever? and changing it ... 10-20 times a day.
[20:40] <aZz7eCh> cos seems like most basic solution for my limited know-how
[20:40] <friendofafriend> Reading, no.

[22:14] <toastintheshell> seems like comitup would probably be helpful for pi0 from yesterday, they were talking about settling on wifi instead of bluetooth/usb for accessing a terminal session, and comitup looks like a great plug-n-play solution
[22:15] <toastintheshell> looks like raspbian plus it automatically puts up a hotspot you can connect to and configure through a web interface or ssh
[22:16] <toastintheshell> then you can tell it what networks to look for, and after that it tries to find its configured networks and connect automatically, if it fails it puts up the hotspot again

[22:23] <_unreal_> and naturally its one of those micro usb wireless adapters
[22:23] <toastintheshell> and then you have to have a wifi network configured properly, and if it's not you have no connection

[22:24] <BurtyB> toastintheshell, well I have 4 configs for the AP I normally use and my mobile if none of them are about

[22:33] <toastintheshell> prefer to have it on my home wifi network if I'm here, but can't really use my phones's hotspots too much for different reasons, so that's not always an option, and there's a few other known networks I might potentially be at.
